Xbox executives say short-term sales of Xbox 360 won't be affected by Sony announcing the PlayStation 4.
Microsoft has said that whatever Sony announces on February 20--when many expect the PlayStation 4 to be formally unveiled--will not impact the Xbox 360 in the short-term, as "the majority of consumers" won't be aware of it.
"Whatever gets announced on February 20th, the majority of consumers in the UK won’t know," said Xbox senior regional director Jonathan Grimes in an interview with MCV.
Microsoft's job will be to ensure its potential customers don't get "lost" in industry chatter over the next few months, adds Grimes. "They'll still want to buy the devices out there," he said. "So in terms of noise our job will be to ensure that the consumers that are going into stores, going online, still see and experience Xbox, rather than get lost in the industry chatter. Whatever is announced is important from an industry perspective, but we must remember who is buying right now."
Elsewhere in the interview Grimes knocked back suggestions that the Xbox 360 could see a further price cut, and issued a caution to gamers who are wishing for a constant "new" in the marketplace.
"The market has changed," said Grimes. "We changed it by introducing Xbox Live and being able to update Xbox 360. The console that you bought when we launch versus the one today is totally different. And this has enabled us to get the install base we have--an install base that wants to buy games."
"We need to be careful about wishing for constant 'new.' We should look at how we can benefit from what is already out."
Grimes was joined by Xbox marketing director Harvey Eagle, who concluded the interview by reasserting the Xbox's position at Microsoft's whole entertainment brand--the kind of thinking that caused one of the original Xbox founders to launch a scathing attack on the company yesterday.
"Xbox is the entertainment brand for Microsoft now," said Eagle. "Whilst gaming will be a core fundamental of what we stand for, in order to grow the market we need to move beyond just gaming. And you are starting to see that happen now with Xbox Music and Xbox Video showing up on Windows 8. Xbox goes from being present on 8m devices to hundreds of millions of devices. The scale that that brings allows you to do different things and hopefully grow the market."
"Think of Xbox as the service, and we just happen to also make a console."
"We need to be careful about wishing for constant 'new.' We should look at how we can benefit from what is already out." John Grimes maks a great point. I think the focus has shifted to, "How to make it new" instead of working with what you got. I understand everyone wants to be on the cutting edge, but then neglect takes effect on your current product.
In other news, people in favor of a specific console continue to argue against others in a comment forum...
Nintendo and the p-ew are irrelevant. The console is for little kids and dance wanna b"sAnd I hope your not talking to me because I have probably been a gamer before you were born, new age ?
Wow are you delusional first off nintendo Is the shit reason they are still in the game. Sony always copy paste as for Xbox the illumiroom will be a big hit and Sony no doubt will try and still that as well also I may not be playing ether system if the rumors are true that they won't allow used games nintendo being smart not going that route will. Draw a lot of attention to consumers facts are facts only a real gamer would show nintendo mad love and respect you are probably one of the new age gamers who have no taste in old school games but to each there own
I have 3 x-boxes and I am so glad The pompous asses at Sony have been under so much pressure that I Believe they will listen to their consumers for once and come out with a great product. This will hopefully keep Microsoft in check since the sound like they think their shit don't stink. It was just a console prior that they were fighting for their life and with win 8 flopping the Xbox becomes that much more important for their company bottom line. They need to realize that we as consumers set the market not them with their ideas of as always online, digital only distribution, and no used games compatibility. All of which allows them to price fix games and content. Just look at the diiference of buying an older game at GameStop vs digital download. Imagine if you didn't have the choice to buy it on disc and were forced to buy only from the marketplace Competition is good for the consumer. I hope that Sony has a reckon console even if I like Microsoft's x box live.
Obviously he's just doing his job as a Microsoft employee. The reality is that almost everyone is waiting to see what Sony will unveil, even the Xbox fan boys.
It will be so funny now if Sony isn't even planning to announce the next Playstation on Feb 20th. All the rumours, analysts predicting this and that, corporate bitching by Microsoft, all the hype... and all that's announced on the day is Uncharted Team Racing (come on you know Naughty Dog has to make a kart racer out of every one of their franchises)
lol considering nearly everyone is on facebook now (including parents), news is bound to spread fast. If I where microsoft I would focus less on paying off people for putting out desperate articles like this and actually try to make something better than sony for once....
for once? the xbox has absolutely shit all over the PS3 this gen. almost every multiplat game that comes out looks better on XBOX. XBOX has better online features and less lag/faster downloads. the XBOX controller is substantially better than PS3.... i mean the list just goes on and on. Sony really fucked up this gen for themselves.
I own both the xbox and the ps3 and both have their pros and cons but honestly i have to give this gen to sony and not microsoft.
I mean playstation has blu ray, free online and if u decide to go psn+ its cheaper then xbox live and offers way more for your money (free games with another new AAA title every month), a controller has to do with personal taste.. i know alot of people preffer a ps controller over an xbox controller.
Xbox live doesnt lag less or more then PSN, not sure about the download speeds.. id say they are pretty even.
And need i talk about the xbox's build quality? Ive had 2 360's die on me and the third (the one which i have now) sounds like a jet engine. Only had to buy one PS3 and havent had a single problem to this day.
I will agree on the fact that alot of multiplatform games run better on xbox but thats because they are developed for the xbox first and then ported to the ps3 (thx to microsoft paying devs big bucks) but ps3 has alot of awesome exclusives that run perfectly anyways.
My money is on Ps4 for the coming round.
i honestly think they should be worried its like they forgot the power of the internet to use for research on games and consoles along with ads on tv i think they are just blowing hot air i honestly do belive they will see there sales impacted
o microsoft if your not worried then why do you keep talking about it? Also we don't live in the 1990's anymore this thing will be known by anyone with an internet browser and looks at the comcast main page
Remember when gamebox just fucking played games? Remember when we didn't have to use the sad and pathetic language of "AAA", "hardcore gamer", "Ip's", "Exclusives". Well you can thank Microsoft for bringing gaming to the absolute crapfest it is now.
They spearheaded the rising costs of games and all those other marketing buzzwords. And now we have DLC we can't own, and less and less "exclusive" and interesting/new games being made. Cheers!
Sony is about catering to actual gamers, so ya, a whole mess of people are gonna notice, and probably care a lot more this time around than they will about the mediahub dudebro box that xbox has turned into.
I loved my first xbox, it was amazing, with amazing games, as I did early 360. But gaming has gone to the toilet, and xbox lead the way. The rest of the world prefers sony and nintendo, probably due to having more exclusive RETAIL/PHYSICAL games. (only in the bubble of america does 360 do better). But also, not charging for live and an endless stream of "AAA" games that show off the many different shades of grey and sh*t-brown has helped sony and nintendo worldwide too.
Buy retail/physical games new. Screw DLC and media hubs. Vote with your dollars please.
Make note my gamer friends.. Xbox live will only get more expensive once more content is added that is meant for a cable box..
If only they would offer a cheaper service without all this added stuff most gamers use less than 10% get charge same as the person who use it much more..
I know my cut off limit just make sure you guys know yours and don't buy into Microsoft marketing saying we need said features...
Bla Bla Bla.... only if they make Live! a free service, I'd consider buying one. Until then I'll just stick with my PC/PS3 combo, which both have "free" online services.
People won't be aware of it? I don't understand what he means. We have the internet, of course people will be aware of it.
Also, "we need to be careful about wishing for a constant "new"". Gamers haven't exactly been wishing for a constant new console, it's 7 years later though, its time for a change.
im not sure some people understand , that he's just talking about the announcement of the PS4, not the release...anyway...keep ragging. makes me laugh
Mums and dads are the majority he's talking about. Sure all us gamers/geeks/techheads will know, but I don't know if we're the majority.
Anyway, i knew this story would create a s**tstorm in the chat/forum. lol @ you.
@emerin76I am pretty sure the ''mums and dads'' will know it fast enough.. you dont think that the first thing children will do is tell their parents what shiny new toy they want next?
And trust me word of a new console spreads fast, you dont need the actual console release to get the word going.
I think the reason why everyone is saying that this xbox executive is either in denial or has shit for brains is simply because what he is saying is friggin retarded.
Thus.. it has nothing to do with us ''raging'' but rather with us stating how it is.
So um lol@you.
@Double-Ego hahah, laugh at me, laugh at you. Isn't the world a better place when we're all laughing? rather than ragging and raging about something petty like what some numbnut said about some piece of technology
There's this thing right.. called the internet. People talk.
It's not 1995 guys, when the bomb drops EVERYONE will find out about it. Not to mention the fact it will likely be on the news and in the papers - look at the iPhone announcements.
I personally cannot wait!
It totally sounds like Microsoft is going through the 5 stages of Grief:
Denial-->Anger-->Bargaining-->Depression and finally Acceptance.
They must have realised that they are slowly dying.
They are obviously in denial at the moment and it wont be long before they head on to the next stage.
PS4 it is then i guess, good luck grieving Microsoft.
Lmao , the majority eh?
Fyi microsoft, your only popular in two countries. Ps3 is popular in nearly all.
I mean if you enjoy having most of your sale sin one country(the US) i guess you can feel proud.
I think it's just a new kind of marketing strategy to announce high-level stupid "news" to bring up all gamers across the board to start talking about a "stupid XBox news", just so the word "XBox" stays in everybodys' minds - Just look at the media success of EA and UbiSoft as prime examples of this working.
Microsoft can battle it out with Sony and Nintendo as much as they want in the media and waste hundreds of millions on marketing campaigns, in the end the sane people buy the hardware they think suits them best (and screws them over the least) and only the braindead zombies insta-buy something because of marketing hype or because it's new.
not to worry MS the kinder people who will know and care about the PS4 are they type who buy a console at launch or whithin the 1st year not 6-7 years later so we good we still looking at +200K monthly sales untill December and with very generous price cut we can keep that +200K monthly sales well into 2014
I think he's trying to send a subliminal message or use some sort of telepathy. That's gotta make sense considering how head scratching this is to me.
He said consumers, not gamers. While gamers are automatically consumers in some way, shape, or form, all consumers are not gamers. Ever seen the Mom on the phone in a Gamestop about to pass out because she's been spinning in a circle for 2 minutes trying to figure out which system she's supposed to be looking for? If my wife isn't with me, I let her spin for another minute or so, it's just too damned funny not to.
The news goes fast like "light speed" dude and whatever Sony has to say, gamers like us will know because news are in everywhere you look.
I have a question for M$: "Which drug/s were you on when making this statement?" Please let me know. You can find me at Gamestop when I line up buy a PS4.
@berserker66666 technically he is right of the hundreds of miilions of consumers out there, parents/grand parents to be specific who do the actual buying they wont know because well they just dont follow gaming news or even have any interest in games at all
But you right too this is marketing BS
@steelmouth Yes they will, "mum, dad, grandad, grandma, could I please get the new playstation for my birthday?"
"There's a new one?"
I feel bad for xbox gamers right now - it seems like MS have pretty much abandoned core games to go off chasing the ca$ual market while you'r left there playing gears of war 11. There just doesnt seem like there is anything to look forward to for xbox gamers at the moment.
@joel_c17 true i guess 3rd party games will have to do until Gears 12
@steelmouth @joel_c17 the only reason halo was so big was coz of the co-op. I used to love halo and owned an xbox (halo was the reason i got an xbox in the first place), but soon as most other titles started incorporating co-op, halo seemed to suck a lot more (level 1 and 2 on halo 2 were brilliant, the rest sucked), after that I decided I would get ps3 because I am more interested in metal gear now I have tried halo 3 on a friends xbox and I thought it was even worse than 2. I have not even bothered trying 4 lol.
Noone's gonna notice the announcement??!!! He's kidding himself if he thinks that every major news outlet won't cover the PS4 announcement. Sounds like this guy is starting to believe his own bullshit.
Totally wrong attitude from this guy. I fear my favorite console is shifting into something other than what it was meant for. These Microsoft executives are talking like games are a side-effect of their machine, and not its primary function. Almost like they could do without gaming. These fuckn suits are gonna crash n burn because noone is gonna buy into the bullshit that they're pushin. I just hope they don't ruin everything that the Xbox is.
