Microsoft unveils Surface tablets

Looks like I'll be waiting until October to get me a new Laptop/Pad then :D

Been eyeing a Samsung Note for a while, but maybe I'll ease off the trigger a little on that for now...

I've had a Windows 7 convertible laptop for over a year now, and I can say they are amazing. Especially when you have pen input capability.

I know that Windows 8 has been designed from the ground up to be the best offering on PC's and tablets. One OS for both platforms rather than different OS's and billions of half-baked apps. 

With the inclusion of the slim keyboard, coupled with it's compact form, unlimited software options, ability to connect to a larger monitor and external hardware, this will be the new generation of laptops.

The "media consumption" tablets will fade out eventually.

They can only go so far before they become full fledged laptops.

Also, Microsoft has been working on the "surface" technology for YEARS before Apple released the i devices.

I look forward to seeing what they can do with it.

Windows 8 seems to be conceiced with that in mind, rather than desktop/laptops.

I wont be hurry, as i m sure that at least for a while, the games will have performance issues with it.

As far as the surface tablet is concerned.

We do not how much part of the windows 8 OS will be avialble for the tablet.

We might see a new OS, a hybrid between the PC OS and the mobile Win8 OS

The UI might be identic, but if the core OS is not quite the same, it wont be able to run the desktop programs.

Of course Win8 will have apps, prolly globally available and compatible though the desktop/tablet and mobile variants of the OS, but again this doesnt mean that you could play a game like D3, in this tablet...

Magnetic cover? Don't the magnets bother the computer's storage drives?

Ehh Android tablets are still going to be better IMO.  Android > W8 tablet = iOS

Now I on tablets trend. That crappy apple only stole from us with their crappy overpriced gimmick tools, now this is a tablet, and a computer in one thing !

this will be interesting. i have been wanting to replace my laptop for a while now. perhaps i finally can.

Getting the Pro version.  A true tablet that I can actually do work on, is a winner to me.  I almost got a IPAD, glad I did not.  I can't wait to install all my  old games and next gen. Also, all my programs, UDK, SONAR, Visual Studio, Office, PhotoShop, the list goes on. Plus, I will have the IPAD toy aspect, where I can watch movies and surf the web with my fingers.  Now I got my portable XBOX.  Just plug in my xbox controller and play high end games from anywhere I am. I can't wait!

A screen cover that's also a kbd. USB and SD card Slot. I'm sold. I was holding out to get an iPad 3, but now I'm getting a Surface.

This is going to flop. It's a simple fact. I can already prove that.

If this was 2 years ago, they would have a shot, but they are too late now.

Apple already owns 68% of the tablet market and Google's Android and RIM's Blackberry take the other spots left. There is no room left. The game is lost before it even started.

As for people saying Windows 8 will be good. No, it won't. Metro is horrible and compared to my Arch Linux computer it is total crap. Windows only wishes it could be half as good as Linux.

The ONLY advantage MS tablet has over others is the possible integration with the workplace ecosystem.

I'd considered getting one of these over an Ipad.

If Microsoft can get this out for under $300, they should be ok. The IPad's are overpriced, but if you are able to get them at a lower price, it's worth owning. I love my IPad 2. I have no desire to buy another one until the IPad 5 is announced. M$ was suppose to have this tablet out over a year ago. It's a little late to the party.

Personally i think if MS hit all the right marks with pricepoint and feature sets etc, theyll have a real winner on their hands.

hopefully they will prove a worthy competitor for the insanely overpriced ipad, with which you've got to buy 100 other non  included things like a simple screen cover!

Anway, I think it's kind of stuck in between a notebook and a tablet and that might be an issue for it.

I have to admit, I can't say I like Windows 8's interface but it felt a bit like Windows 7 but with tablet ergonomics in mind. It wouldn't be right if it had the same setup for a regular computer. ""Ahhhh! I'm trying to select this program but it keeps selecting the ones adjacent to it. FML."

I was going to get the next iPad next year, but this just made me change my mind and now I'm going to wait and see what Microsoft has come up with, especially with the Windows 8 Pro version :D

I'm happy with ma iPad 2 but this seems like the iPad killer seeing its made and sold by M$

remember right after the MS Press Conference, the trolls were raging about how Smartglass was pointless and stupid. Who's stupid now ?? Eat your words trolls !

And it will cost FAR less than the iPad 3 does today. Mark my words.

Windows 8 is going to surprise people. It works a lot better than you might think. I ran the Consumer Preview for a while and was very impressed. The people that are complaining about the interface obviously haven't tried it yet.

I say this as a huge fan of Windows 7. I liked XP and hated Vista, enough to keep XP until Windows 7 was finally released. 7 was really a huge improvement over XP in many ways, and while 8 is not a huge improvement over 7, the interface is good enough that the OS can actually be used for both tablets and PCs. Performance seems to have improved over 7 as well. So while I do love 7, 8 is all-around better and I won't hesitate to switch.

Metro takes a little adjustment as a PC user, but it's not hard to figure out at all, and there are some nice UI features to it that I actually appreciate.

I was thinking MS tablets (and windows 8 in general) was gonna suck. But after researching this thing. Im impressed. I think the Pro version is more of an ultrabook. Plus having an ivybridge processor to play diablo 3 is a plus :)

The price will be the deal maker or deal breaker.

LOoks pretty nice. I'm sure a lot of people are gonna slam Microsoft for this, but I think it's a step in the right direction for them anyways. They really aren't able to get any marketshare in the smartphone arena, so why not try another , yet slightly similar field.

Does look expensive. But hey IPAD was like $800 starting out which was ridiculous for a big iphone which isn't a laptop replacement by any means with its restrictions. Now its better and cheaper. So the value of this is hopefully good from the start or over time. lol, How many devices will we have in the future per person?

I'm an android for smartphones/tablet fan and a PC user for work and games. This looks great for a windows tablet, maybe good for more work intensive purposes than play but I wish the best for it. Cool keyboard and cover, very creative. I keep an eye out. Hope my desktop PC doesn't look like that though in the future. This maybe a tablet that can be a true laptop replacement.
