Minecraft franchise sales hit 17.5 million

Mojang reveals Pocket Edition of creation game hits 5 million in sales, boosting total franchise figure to new milestone.

The Minecraft franchise has reached new heights. Mojang developer Johan Bernhardsson announced via his Twitter page today that Minecraft: Pocket Edition has reached 5 million in sales, pushing the series sales total to over 17.5 million.

Minecraft for PC and Mac remains the breadwinner of the bunch, selling 8.3 million copies. The Xbox Live Arcade version of Minecraft is no slouch, though, selling 4.48 million copies as of last week.

Gamers interested in getting an inside look at the development of Minecraft can check out 2Player Productions' official Minecraft documentary. It was targeted to launch December 7, but according to a tweet from the company, it has been delayed to sometime later this month.

Considering JUST THE AGE demographic of those that slurp up this game, I am not really surprised at how much success it has had...DOESN'T mean I think any higher of them or the game!

5 + 8.3 + 4.48 = 17.78 so is this off by over 250,000 copies sold?

Wait... Looking at the Comments below about porting it to the VITA...

NOW THAT's a good idea... i would love to drop on my bed and turn sideways and have the screen constantly be in range with your eyes...

The Problem with the 360 or PC one... you drop on the bed and turn... the SCREEN does not follow you!

RELAX AND PLAY!

If there was one game I could say was worth the purchase this year, it was Minecraft.

Should I buy the 360 version or the PC version? What are the major differences?

@Meta-Gnostic Major differences - PC version is most up to date.

- imo PC version has better controls - 360 version is better for playing with friends.

If you have a halfway decent pc I would suggest getting it on the PC.

One hit wonder. Notch will never do anything remotely as popular.

@Ripper_TV Does he need to? Isnt creating greatness something that should be applauded and appreciated, rather than used as a hitting stick for anything else he does?

I had this little ignorant hipster attitude when minecraft first came out. Didn't really like it, and thought it looked kind of stupid. Turns out, I was stupid. Lol. It's a great game, and it's hard to get bored with it when they keep adding new things to it. I don't consider myself a creative person, but if something pops into your head, chances are you can build it. I love minecraft, and it's a good game. It proves to today's kids that graphics aren't everything. Minecraft is one of the games where you can just escape the little snot nosed punks over call of duty or halo or something. It's definitely something everyone needs to try if they haven't already.

Minecraft is best on PC and it's only suitable that this version sells the most. Minecraft is now as indie as an Indiana Jones movie :P.

We gonna get one of these "Minecraft sells X amount" articles for every 10th sale it makes now or something?

@DarkSaber2k Yes, just to annoy you.

@ryan0991  @DarkSaber2k I agree with DarkSaber. 17.5 as a milestone? 10, 20, 30 etc. is understandable but 17.5? It just seems like a desperate attempt on a slow news day to post an article about something people care about to drive traffic.

First version of minecraft i played was pirated. I wasnt sure what to expect. I had read about all the hype but didnt understand what the game was about. Bought it 30 minutes later.

I recently purchased the pocket edition after playing the PC version for 2 years. Best 7 dollars I have ever spent on a phone app.

And where are those that claim piracy kills games? Eh? :P

Henrique2324
Henrique2324

@LonerCat I wouldn't say piracy ever killed a game, to me it just drove some foolish publishers away. But to give you an idea, Minecraft's PC version is so intensely pirated around Brazil, that almost all public servers offer "players" pirated game clients on their respective websites.

...and I am one of those 17.5 million. I've had the PC version of Minecraft since Alpha, and it's become one of my favorite games. I'm not a fan of Mojang. Notch and his publicity annoy me, the engine should have left Java and been rebuilt from the ground up a long time ago, and modding should have been embraced early on to prevent many of the issues we have today.

That said, it was $13 well spent. Glad I bought it when I did. I personally think it's worth the asking price, but that doesn't mean they have to charge nearly $30 for it!

I've owned minecraft since it was first released. To me, it is the perfect "inbetweener" game. Whenever i need a break from playing too much of one game i play minecraft. I also play it, during the lapse between a finished game and the next new release. the game is always there, something new to do all the time, and it's still being updated all the time (for pc anyhow). It's a great filler in my gaming collection.

Henrique2324

@Urizen5 That's exactly how I would describe my experience with Minecraft (Had it since beta). The randomly generated worlds factor heavily into this.

One more reason casual gaming is more reelevant now days than triple AAA games. Even if you put COD and AC3 together can reach the level of sales of this game.

Poodger

@VampireLord123 I wouldn't categorize Minecraft as a "casual" game. It is a game that fulfills a wide spectrum of interests. Casuals can play it, yes. But it also appeals to the hardcore gamers, and the sheer magnificence of some creations can attest to the gap between these two audiences.

Henrique2324
Henrique2324

@VampireLord123 Minecraft is an indie game. Casual gaming is boringly overdone on simplicity and lack much depth.

VampireLord123
VampireLord123

 @Henrique2324

Well technically it could be a casual game, anyone can play it, it does not require a great deal of skill to play, not like the title I already mention. Most indie games are casual, becomes they aim to a different crowd than people that are looking for big AAA titles.

Henrique2324
Henrique2324

@VampireLord123 What was the last time you saw a casual game with support for mods and texture packs? Or without a tutorial, for that matter? Minecraft can be hard to get into. Although there are countless videos and tutorials on the internet for Minecraft, it is not suited for your average casual gamer. And imo, most indie games aren't strictly casual, mainly because they form a sort of niche market bringing in many unique ideas.
