LucasArts announces remake of Monkey Island 2 and the PlayStation Network version of The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition.
SAN FRANCISCO--Last year, LucasArts gave Monkey Island fans a chance to relive fond memories of 1990s adventure gaming when it announced The Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition on the PC and Xbox 360. With the 2010 Game Developers Conference well underway, LucasArts announced at an event tonight that The Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition is coming to the PlayStation Network "in a few weeks."
More importantly, LucasArts also announced that Monkey Island 2 Special Edition: LeChuck's Revenge will be hitting the Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network, PC, iPhone, and iPod Touch this summer. Players will once again be able assume the role of the wannabe-pirate Guybrush Threepwood in the sequel, who must use his wits to solve puzzles in order to find the legendary treasure of Big Whoop.
Similar to the release of The Secret of Monkey Island, Monkey Island 2 will include features, such as high-definition graphics, a remastered soundtrack, and three-tiered hint system. The interactive hint system has been expanded and can be used to highlight important objects in the environment. Aside from the audio and visual upgrades, LeChuck's Revenge will allow players to directly control Guybrush if they choose, instead of relying on the traditional point-and-click formula to navigate.
In-game audio commentary from the game's creators will be included so players can listen in on the developers' thoughts and memories regarding the sequel. LeChuck's Revenge will once again include the ability to switch between the original game and the updated version, which was available in the first remake. There will be voice acting in both modes this time around, and the original voice actors from the Monkey Island franchise will reprise their roles. In addition, there will be an in-game art viewer that will display original and new concept art used during the making of the game.
Craig Derrick, the project lead on the Monkey Island remakes also announced that there will be Monkey Island-themed outfits available for PlayStation Home avatars, as well as a pirate ship environment coming out in a few weeks.

Just got Secret of MR this weekend. Will definitely get LC's Revenge. Hope they remake all of them. Can't wait for my favorite version: CURSE of Monkey Island.
I am a sad person, soon as I heard this news I completed Monkey Island 2 :P. The pictures of this remake look even better than the first game and I can't wait to hear the music being played on instruments. I still prefer the original artwork for the cover though!
Nice :) I loved the older Monkey Islands, though I actually haven't downloaded the first one from Xbox Live yet. Maybe they'll release the series on disc once all have been made. Here's hoping.
The Monkey Island remake is overall, absolutely well done, and i was really hoping they would announce a remake for LeChuck's Revenge. The only gripe i had with the remake is they needed to make the animation smoother, to keep up with the ultra hi res artwork, hopefully they do that for the next remake. All they would need to do for Curse is upgrade everything to hi def, then leave it as is, which i hope they do.
Ya Monkey Island makes much more sense then news on a sequel to the long awaited Star Wars Battlefront series. 5 Years we have waited and nothing. LUCAS ARTS MAKE STAR WARS BATTLESFRONT 3 ASAP!
yay :D can't wait..also my only hope now is that they 'd remake Full Throttle after they're done with ME remakes
Sweet. I have the originals already, and I'm not a huge fan of digital distribution, so I might wait to see if they bring this into retail as a compilation first. But still, a good way to introduce people to a series that they may be too young to remember.
OMG cant wait! And now for the most important question: how much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
Hurray! I hope this trend continues. Bringing old games back with a few visual touch ups for a whole new generation of gamers to enjoy!
I have been waiting for this since the first one was announced. I cant wait and Monkey 2 is one of my favorite games of all time. Now lets get a Indiana Jonas and the Fate of Atlantis remake with Harrison Ford doing the voice overs for Indy. This would kick ass!
Full Throttle next followed by Grim Fandango, The Dig, Day of the Tentacle and then remake the awful Monkey Island 4 :D
Yeah, finally the last part with no proper voice acting gets sorted. MI2 was probably my favorite in the series and I just love Dominic Armato as Guybrush - he IS him. I hope there'll be an iPhone version of this as well as it was with the first one.
Perhaps they'll finally resolve just how much wood a woodchuck would chuck (assuming he could...health and safety and all...). The original MI2 was such a great game.
I wonder if they going to do Curse of Monkey Island some time. It is one of the most beautiful games of all times (and my personal favourite in the series). It looks ok now in 640x480 but If they could remaster graphics in high res and update sound it would be awesome.
this news has made my day...so pumped i hope they make more of them for xbla....especially day of the tentacle!
Not sure if any of you followed the freeware upgrades that people have made. But I feel so bad for this group that were working on bringing a spoken script to the original Monkey Island. All that hard work and then LucasArts just slap ya in the face with new graphics, new interface, and speech. Sucks for them, but honestly this is better!
AHHH, the second installment is my fav. I hope they do it justice. Looking forward to it. Liked the first remake.
@topraman517 I also like the old style more but it will be nice to have the game on my 360. I don't know what happened to my PC game.
I don't like the overly cartoony approach they've been taking with these Money Island remakes. In a way the originals actually have MORE graphical detail, albeit at a much lower resolution. So basically, I'll stick to the originals.
Awesome, I found Le Chucks Revenge to be one of the thoughest of the series to beat. @Junglemanchild Is that picture fanmade, or did they allready released some pics?
Day of the Tentacle was the one of my favourite games of all time. I bet even at today's standards, the graphics are still decent enough to endure another playthrough, which is a shame really otherwise I bet the developers would definitely consider a remake. Please Lucasarts give us a sequel!!! Make it happen!!!
I would happily pay for any remade Lucasarts title from the past , Full Throttle , Grim Fandago and Day of the tentacle come on Lucasarts sort it out !
yawn. great, i can play a next-gen console version of a 20-year old game that already came out a year ago at this point. But I can overpay for it on a digital store now, as well. Thanks, PSN! i love your nickel and dime feature. You should also sell me an option to compare my Monkey Island score on an online leaderboard for 2 dollars. Oh, man, I can get trophies, too! **Rolls eyes** Just let me go check my Facebook, so I can make sure I know the exact release date of this catastrophe and blindly fall for yet another money-making scheme like the rest of the masses with no brain function.
@serieus Well, it's not "high resolution". Frankly, I haven't been able to play it correctly since I upgraded my computer to Windows 7. This and Outlaws just work like crap. Or not at all.
