Need for Speed movie arriving February 7, 2014

DreamWorks Studios' full-length film based on Electronic Arts' racing series to be distributed by Disney; gets winter release date.
Last month, DreamWorks Studios announced it had picked up the film rights to Electronic Arts' flagship racing franchise Need for Speed, revealing that a movie based on the series wouldn't enter production until 2013. Despite that, according to Deadline, DreamWorks has announced a firm release date for the untitled film: February 7, 2014. Disney will distribute the film worldwide upon release.
The Need for Speed film is being described by EA as "a fast-paced, high-octane film rooted in the tradition of the great car culture films of the '70s while being extremely faithful to the spirit of the video game franchise." The project will not be based on any single game in the series.
Directing the film will be Scott Waugh, who's best known for helming Act of Valor, a military movie starring active-duty US Navy SEALs. Possibly more relevant to the Need for Speed project will be Waugh's experience on stunt crews for dozens of films, including Torque, The Italian Job, and Biker Boyz.
Waugh will be filming a screenplay penned by George Gatins, the executive producer of DreamWorks' 2010 comedy She's Out of My League. Gatins developed the Need for Speed film's story with his brother John, who is producing the film and also wrote the scripts for Real Steel and the upcoming Flight.
As for the gaming franchise, it too has a new installment on the way in the form of Criterion Games' Need for Speed Most Wanted, which is set for release on October 30.

1 Like Okay tell me something to make me not think this is going to be your typical, typecast, spectacle of an action flick. I mean, I don't expect any oscar-nominees here, but video game movies have a track record of being, you know...not worth my money.
Diseny is not about mickey mouse anymore. They done some great jobs with thier licenses. Like Avengers movie.
@Bumblebee1138 Okay, TBH I quite liked Split/Second (which I believe was published by them), but overall I'm not really a fan of them. Can't explain it, I just simply don't like them.
Excuse me, where does it say anyone hating anything? I don't see the word "hate" anywhere, except you, Bumblebee.

@Bumblebee1138 yeah had it, not for long though. Its fast but didn't have enough of variety. Don't get me wrong it looked great and had a distinct criterion (burnout) feel and look, i adored the burnout series, i should have maybe given it more time. To be fair after your comment i may have to re buy it, your right it probably is the best in the Nfs series so far, i meant the series had always been disappointing to me that one wasn't to bad however and it did look great :)

When did they announce a burnout with cops??!! oh...it's need for speed... -.- Need for speed is dead now, the name has no meaning anymore other than a synonym for Burnout. As for the movie, I'm more than happy as long as they don't go breaking the laws of physics with the stunts(Fast and Furious 5 anyone?).

I am definitely not going to see this, but I am curious to know if they are going to make it different than the Fast and Furious movies.
1 Like They will, lovie. It's an animated Disney/Pixar movie. Meaning, no gratuitous nudity, drugs, graphic violence, and vulgar language. Just happy, safe, family fun!

Those movies could be just what the sci-fi genre needs.
Like star wars. Except more brutally realistic, but not horror. A plot like saving private ryan.
1 Like @GOGOGOGURT Exactly what I was thinking. There is a lot better material out there than freakin street racing. I am sure it will be a decent flick, but come on Hollywood.. can we please see something from one of these other franchises that actually have deep interesting universes to explore? It baffles me that a Halo movie still hasn't been made. Even if it was terrible it would make them a ridiculous amount of cash. I just can't understand why something that would be a sure fire project would keep being put on the back burner.
We have got to get a Mass Effect movie also. Bioware has created an amazing and deep universe that would translate wonderfully to the silver screen. I work in the film industry and even I can't understand the Studios thinking sometimes.
1 Like @playniko69 @GOGOGOGURT Your right, which is why we get so many remakes because stories like Total Recall, Judge Dredd, etc.. already have an established fan base. However, so does Halo and Mass Effect.
Halo or Mass Effect film would cost a lot of money, but both franchises have a large enough fan base that these films would probably make their money back pretty fast.
1 Like @brad12d3 @GOGOGOGURT but then again, it's super easy to screw up a halo or mass effect movie. Considering that you have to appeal to both gamers and non-gamers...otherwise the producers would hesitate to make the movies posible...which is a real bitch...again. Take Amazing Spiderman for example, you can tell most haters are the ones that never even read the comics (and think that San Raimi's version was the real spiderman) I blame the people who blindly hate things.

They'll probably get some $$$ from the Fast And Furious crowd....never liked those movies but NFS Underground 2 and Most Wanted were awesome games I'm going to just skip this.....hopefully it won't make a lot so they won't do another......
At least Deus Ex and Assassin's Creed have good stories attached to them....

Why would you wish misfortune upon a project so prematurely? It may be a great movie that deserves success, and you cast a childish judgment. Give it a chance, jeez.

It shouldn't be made, NFS sucks anymore EA should bench the franchise but they are too stupid to do that so they'll have a movie made so they'll have something to rally behind when the next NFS comes out......
Sorry but there's a ton of other films that deserve to be made over this....I'd rather see a film based on Tetris than this.....just saying. Borderlands, Bioshock, System Shock, Syndicate, Mirror's Edge, Jade Empire, Mass Effect, Half Life, Portal, Left 4 Dead and more are all worthy of being made into films but all of them have very hardcore fans who would rather not see the games ruined by a bad movie which is what Hollywood always gives us when they do a game adaptation....I could count the good ones on one hand.....
EA is too stupid to bench NFS? Why would you stop development of a franchise that continues to make you money? Its not stupid to continue making something that people are buying, its called supply and demand.
