[UPDATE] Gears of War movie moves forward as LOTR studio wins film rights; Collateral scribe on board for screenplay, studio targets summer 2009.
With games being a prime target of film studio execs for source material, it was only a matter of time before Epic Games' Xbox 360 hit Gears of War began its walk down the road to becoming a movie.
Variety is reporting today that New Line Cinema has acquired the movie rights to Gears of War. Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey will produce the film, which is being written by Stuart Beattie (Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, Collateral). No more details of the movie have been released, including crew and release date.
Gears of War, published by Microsoft Game Studios, has won several Game of the Year awards since its release last November. As of mid-January, the game had sold more than 3 million units worldwide.
The next task for the film is to actually get made. Several high-profile movies based on games are still in limbo but slowly moving forward, with Sony working on bringing Metal Gear Solid to the big screen, Jerry Bruckheimer bringing his brand of action to Prince of Persia, and Warner Bros. affiliate Legendary Pictures working on a World of Warcraft movie. Others, such as the big-budget endeavor to bring Halo to the cineplex, have stalled completely.
[UPDATE] Since the announcement, GameSpot has confirmed the report with Epic Games vice president Mark Rein and more details have surfaced. New Line is targeting a summer 2009 release for the game, and Variety predicts that a Gears of War sequel will be timed with the release of the movie.
The trade magazine claims Epic has crafted "an extensive backstory in hopes of utilizing it for a film as well as potential novels," despite criticism of the guarded storyline of the first game.
"We wanted to make an entertainment property that's not just for games but for other media," Rein told Variety.
Screenwriter Beattie's involvement with the project didn't come over a high-priced meal on Sunset Boulevard, but with a simple message sent over Xbox Live. Beattie told Reuters that while playing Gears of War one night, "This New Line exec Jeff Katz dropped me a message in my Xbox Live account saying, 'If we bought the game you're playing right now, would you write it?' And this was back in December. It shows you how on-the-ball New Line was. I'm going to write off my Xbox Live this year, accounting-wise."
marcus- batista dom- vin diesal or dwayne"rock" johnson baird- ryan reynolds cole- i remember hearing somebody say that the guys that does the voice for cole looks alot like him so just go with that guy, idk his name. kim-idk have jackie chan go bald lol jk idk hoffman- idr his name he looks and sounds exactly like him he is the football coach in saving silverman, those r my choices. metal gear solid doesnt really need to b made into a movie to b honest w/ u. prince of persia could b interesting. and WoW, that doesnt sound like a good idea at all
i think the cast should be as follows marcus phoenix : batista dom: vin diesel cole train: terry crews baird: jason statham
WoW, PoP, GoW. These movies-based-on-acronyms better be good. I have high hopes that game-based movies will finally be good!
all i can say is that this movie will either be wicked awesome or really suck. and if it really sucks it will really ruin the game series.
Cast should be Fenix: Thomas Jane(The Punisher) Cole - Lester Speight (coles vioce actor/terible terry tate) Dom - Amaury Nolasco (prison break) Kim - Ken Watanabe Baird - Eric Bana (Hulk/black hawk down) Hoffman - Sam Elliot(hulk) jason statham as baird would be good, but vin deisel as fenix? bad actor, doesfit the character ype
Batista should definatley be marcus fenix no doubt vin diesel as dom ving rhames as cole jason statham as baird awsome cast would make a great movie as long as it dont follow doom and screw around to much with the original story.
ok i've come up with a cast that the movie makers should take scratch my last one Marcus - gerard butler (300) Dom - Benjamin Bratt (not so sure bout him but couldnt think of one) Baird - jason statham ( The transporter) Cole - Ving Rhames (dawn of the dead) let me know what u think about this
After reading some of yours guys comments Vin Diesel does sound pretty good in this movie. I really hope he does play in this movie because I love his Chronicles of Ridick Movie and Pitch-Black.
this will be huge cast 1.marcus fenix.batista 2.don.vin diesel 3.that robot man i forget his name he should be :jim carrey or martin lawrence 4.for the colonel.he should be nicholas cage or bruce willis
george lopez are u kiddi g me? cast: Marcus Fenix - Gerard Butler from 300 Dom Santiago - Vin Diesel Baird - Thomas Jane Cole - micheal clarck duncan
tha cast should be Marcus Fenix - Dave Batista Dom - George Lopez or Karl Urban Cole - Jamie Foxx Baird - Jake Gyllenhaal Lt. Kim - Jackie Chan Anya - Jessica Alba that Colonel (i 4get his name) - Bruce Willis Carmine - Trohper Grace (from Spider-man 3) and P.S. i agree with LesVR6 and Gameheaven that Batista does look a lot like Marcus Fenix. Also i think this would be a great cast 4 tha film
"they make a gears of war movie but where is the god of war movie doosh"...Its in the works too buddy, I saw it on wikipedia anyway. Theres only ONE WWE superstar for this movie and its Batista as Fenix. Thomas Jane would be OK for Baird, but Baird was kind of a panzy in the game...so I dont know that it would work. Besides hes dong the Punisher 2. Everyone pretty much NAILED Cole, Duncan or Rhames would be a good choice....as far as Dom, ehh does it really matter...what I want to know...is who will be playing the "power ranger" huh? Yeah..think about hahahahah.
Theres only one person that should play marcus in the movie and thats Batista, he looks exactly like him.
Michael Clarke Duncan/Ving Rhames - Cole Gerard Butler - Marcus Thomas Jane - Baird Vin Diesel - Dom Your perfect cast!
This is more a reply to some people that a comment but i hope it helps. Gears isn't set on Earth so the locust ain't the aliens WE are! We inhabited there planet and used the Imulsion *spelt wrong sorry* as a cheap energy source. The locust emerged becuase the Imulsion is required for them to live/ procreate/ religious worship/ feed the dog I don't know. Fenix is in prision because he disobeyed orders and went to try to save his dad, he failed and got court martialed. This is in your instruction booklet and theres a video about emergence day if you leave the game at the main menu for a few minutes. Theres loads more info on this in Wikipedia don't know how much of it is acurate but. A movie would be a good plan to clear up the story before hand. If it is released it seems kinda planned how they left out the storys. Hope that helped someone. As for characters; Marcus Fenix - Gerard Butler from 300 Dom Santiago - Vin Diesel from Fast and the Furious Baird - Thomas Jane from The Punisher Cole - The Rock Probably the worst match Ive picked to be honoust These guys are meant to be huge built blokes that shoot first and are to thick to think of questions. There soldiers not scientists.
a prologue to the 1st gears game would be sweet. how the locusts were created and how they inhabited earth. The big guns pro ball career. why fenix is in jail. who the lady soldier is in relation to fenix and the stories of all the other characters that you fight with in the game.
i also would like to add the World of War crack dosent need any more crap advertisement its just like the damed Ever Crack (quest) i cant say much about it cause im a MMoRPG player in CoV and CoH but i do know when enough gaming is enough b4 my character is LEVEL 70 when yah reach that level your the coolest bad a$$ in the game but in life ur a level 70 MEGA DORK!
Personaly i think that the producers of this movie should lean more towards the beginning of gears of war rather than the game... most new comers to GoW are confused about the beginnin and go "wtf why is fenix in jail?" or "what happened b4 the actual game to lead up to the game?" wait.. i know that last one was dumb but still! they need to probly make 3 movies 1) when fenix join the gears 2)the actual game and last but not least 3) the second gears of war game if it so demes to come out.
Gears movie would be so much better than a World of Warcraft. if you want somthing like that see Lord of The Rings!
This'll be great if they stick to the game. Even if the acting isn't great(you gotta admit, some of the dialogue in the game was slightly below Shakespearian), if they're true to the game's plot line and focal points, this'll be a great movie. I'm looking forward to seeing the Corpser.
I just hope they donīt screw this film up as they do to all video game based films...... and i hope they wonīt use stupid bad actors like Bruce Willis or Vin Diesel ..... YOU ALL MUST AGREE.
Resident Evil movies are fair enough..., every other, IMO, suck. note: Gears is bigger than I though, just the other day I was having lunch with a father of a friend, and he didn't even know that I'm very into video-games and he started talking about this awsome game called Gears..., I thought to myself "look at this dude... he sounds just like a teenager, his freakin eyes are glowing..." LOL!
You guys don't know how to pick characters you idiots... Marcus Fenix = Mathew Perry from Friends Cole Train = Erkle the Suspender Nerd Dom = William Hong from American Idol "She bangs, she bangs" Baird = Papa Smurf Now if those people don't look like exactly like the characters then let a flying icecream truck hit me....AND LIVE!!!
I had posted a message, but changed it after looking through all of the others....so just to add/edit the awesomeness of someone's earlier prospective casting... Marcus Fenix - Bruce Willis (see Tears of the Sun, great idea O.P.) Dom Santiago - Vin Diesel (also, a near perfect fit, save for the haircut) Baird - Thomas Jane (see The Punisher/Deep Blue Sea...probly the best fit for this character) Cole - Ving Rhames (Bad ass...see Dawn of the Dead) Also...if they don't go overboard with CGI, go kind of a mix b/w LOTR, Dawn of the Dead and Saving Ryan, the movie could rock. I would suggest James Gunn as the director (he did D.O.D. and Slither...seems good at survival/horror/gory gun fights)
better not screw this up! i'm ready to sue you!!! Just kidding....but seriously, don't screw up.....
http://movies.ign.com/articles/744/744639p2.html go here its funny
We hope and pray it'll turn out, holding out for the best but deep down we know it'll be somewhat of a let down...Another Resident Evil...another Doom.
It seems that ALOT OF YOU have a brain disorder! HELLO! THE FRIGGIN GUY THAT DOES COLES VOICE ACTING IS AS BIG AS THE VIDEO GAME COLE! HE IS TERRY TATE OFFICE LINEBACKER AND I HOPE HE SACKS YOU FOR THINKING THAT SOME OTHER GUY CAN DO THE NOISES AND PHRASES BETTER THAN HIM! as for the cast. and BLONDE HAIRED blue eye character can play BAIRD BUT! DANIEL CRAIG IS RIPPED! AND THERE GONNA HAVE PEOPLE YOU NEVER HEARD OF PLAYING THESE GUYS BECAUSE THEY WANT ROPPED DUDES. WWE GUYS. CHECK IT! BATISTA=DOM! anyways stop being stupid and actually find out who is in your game if you love it that much. i friggin had the voice picked out the second i put the game in because THE PAIN TRAIN RULES! WHOOOOOO WHOOOOOO!
I love it when movies get based on games, even when they suck it's great to see how they've done things. Hell I even loved the Dead or Alive movie just because it was funny to see how they linked it. A World of Warcraft movie though? There is about 8 million accounts on that game for a start so that movie is going to be a big hit even if it is just a fat guy dressed as a cow dancing for 2 hours. ( I know I'd see it)
Marcus = Arnuld Swartzinegger Baird = Keffer Sutherland (Jack Bauer) The Cole Train = Mr. T and just for the hell of it, Dom = Chuck Norris
holy hell! thats great news, I cant wait, the release date of a game sequel at the same time of the movie sounds **** awesome
Cole- the rock or batista Dom- mark whalberg or colin ferrel Cole- micheal clarke duncan baird- daniel craig or paul walker
