Satoru Iwata remarks on US holiday sales of new console, says system is "selling steadily"; two-SKU launch has been "challenge."
Nintendo president Satoru Iwata told Reuters in a new interview that Wii U sales in the United States during the ever-important holiday period could not match the original Wii in 2006, but were "not bad."
"At the end of the Christmas season, it wasn't as though stores in the U.S. had no Wii U left in stock, as it was when Wii was first sold in that popular boom," Iwata said. "But sales are not bad, and I feel it's selling steadily."
Iwata did not divulge specific holiday season Wii U sales figures, nor did he provide a forecast for the console. Nintendo announced in October that it hoped to sell 5.5 million Wii U consoles by the end of March 2013.
The console went on sale in the United States November 18, selling more than 400,000 units during its first week, a period that included the Black Friday shopping bonanza. During the Wii U's Japanese launch weekend in December, more than 308,000 systems were sold in the region.
Iwata also remarked on Nintendo's first-ever two-SKU system launch, saying the 32GB $350 Wii U Deluxe model proved far more popular than the 8GB $300 version, which left significant stock on shelves and consumer headaches.
"It was the first time Nintendo released two models of the game console at the same time...and I believe there was a challenge with balancing this. Specifically, inventory levels for the premium, deluxe package was unbalanced as many people wanted that version and couldn't find it," Iwata said.
I got a super gaming PC, so of the Wii U, Durango and Orbis, the only one that could POSSIBLY offer something I can't already do better with my PC is the Wii U. So I bought one.
It's funny to listen to Nintendo maniacs list off reasons that they're dead in the water console is worthy of purchase. I guess this was the way I felt when Sega and dreamcast took a nosedive. I was a hardcore Sega fan and playing all through your childhhood cements loyalty. But finally you will have to look yourself in the mirror and question your sanity as I did.
If the Wii U had come out earlier in this console cycle, I think it would have been a great system for Nintendo. But they brought it out at the ass-end of this console generation. Most are preparing for the next-gen or are happy with their PS3s and 360s.
@SavoyPrime It's not the tail-end of the generation, it's technically the first entry in the start of the next. (based on Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo representing the console generations)
I knew selling two versions of the same console would be their demise...i didn't want the basic set either and neither did any of my friends...and the funny thing is they didn't think this would happen? this is why nintendo is doing so poorly because they don't understand marketing at all...they don't truly understand what consumers want...
thats if the wiiu is around in the next 4 years even the wii did not get alot of great 3rd party games and that was on a system that had way lower game budgets and they had nothing now why would game teams not put games on the wii but are going to put games on the wiiu a system a hd system where the average cost to develop a AAA game is in the 10s of millions the wiiu is going to get vary waterd down ps4 and xbox 720 ports at best and whos going to want a wiiu in the next 4 years when the ps4 and xbox 720 do everything the wiiu cant i am sure the ps4 and xbxo 720 will have blu ray, huge hard drives, streaming cable tv, and to top it off graphics nintendo fanboys can only dream of having on the wiiu
@emptycow well wii u doesn't play blu ray movies but it does have a custom disc drive that is blu ray based...so the games are not dvd or cd they are blu ray discs...
here is one reason the wiiu wont sell http://www.gamestop.com/ps3/consoles/playstation-3-system-250gb-uncharted-3-game-of-the-year-bundle/105228 and this is the trash you get with the wiiu http://www.gamestop.com/wii-u/consoles/nintendo-wii-u-32gb-deluxe-set/104794
@emptycow Are you acting stupid or...anyways no shit they're offering Uncharted with the PS3 the fucking system has been out for awhile. The want to sell more units but the Wii U system is brand new & it still has Nintendo Land which surprisingly from how people are talking about it they enjoy it.
If you're such a PS3 sucker please don't go into topics you're obviously going to troll in. Plus I know it burns you inside that Nintendo was one of the top companies to make sure that video games didn't fade back when the infamous video game crash happened.
Oh one more tidbit for you. Nintendo originally asked sony to design a cd system for them way back then & for whatever reason they scrapped it & sony kept going with it. So if it wasn't for Nintendo sony wouldn't have made the PS the way it is or at all.
WiiU? More like Pee-Yew, because it STINKS!! HEYYOOO!!!
In all seriousness, I called this years ago when the Wii was selling like hot-cakes and Zenga was all the rage. That is, Wii was a one-time fad. It was going to lose steam eventually, and it did. You can't have the "gimmick 2" and expect to repeat the same success. The little kids and soccer moms are OVER it.
Success behind games is the same as it ever was--true gamers want cutting edge technology fueling excellent, innovative games and gameplay. Not gimmicks.
@JackHoleFace00 I agree CPU is lower in the Wii U than current systems but better GPU than the current systems. Basically the Wii U has better graphics but can't have as much things going on at once.
At least it's backwards compatible as far as I know the PS4 & the new Xbox won't be. Plus the PS4 is going to have that game lock crap so you can't play used games on it or something like that. Honestly I think all the new systems are going to flop I hope Nintendo doesn't sense they've been around longer than the rest but oh well life moves on.
But this isn't supposed to be directly competing with PS3/360. It's primary competition will be PS4 and the next Xbox. And my point is that aside from gamers appreciating cutting edge tech, they want great GAMES. And that's Nintendo's problem. 95% of what comes out is total garbage, including almost all 3rd party software. Gamers don't care about gimmicks, motion control, touch screen, dual screen, etc., if the game itself SUCKS. And that's why people are over the WiiU already--they learned their lesson with the gimmicky Wii and are over it.
I got your "proof" right here, you oblivious fool:
An attachment rate of 1.2 at launch. That's pathetic. 360 and PS3 had an attachment rate of over 4 at launch. So yes, I do know $h!t about anything, you twit.
As for the graphics, clearly my point sailed right over your head, so I'll say it again: yes, they are better... because they SHOULD be considering Wii U costs more MONEY and PS3 and Xbox are SIX YEARS OLD.
Who's the ass now?? Wake up and stop kidding yourself with your blind Nintendo fanboy patriotism.
@JackHoleFace00 @UnbornCorpser The fuck are you getting your statistics from? You monitor every freakin' store across the entire planet & know who returns their systems or don't touch it anymore? Please you obviously don't know shit about anything.
First off the Wii U does have better graphics the GPU is better in the Wii U than the PS3/360. The CPU is not as good meaning it can't display as many things on screen at any given time. That is kind of bullshit but don't be saying that Wii U doesn't have better graphics when it obviously does.
In any case since you have 100% proof that everyone in the entire planet is over the Wii U show it otherwise don't bring in statements that make you look like an ass.
Hahahaha, this just shows how much market you've lost with the Wii, idiots.
WHERE'S YOUR CASUALS NOW?
I'm considering buying a Wii U once the price fits my "fitting values", i.e., maybe 4 years from now.
The 8 GB version is an absolute disgrace. Who the hell wants a system with 3 GB of space? (That's how much you end up with after the mass updates you have to immediately install)
The 32 GB version isn't much better. A modern console needs more space than that.
@Thanatos2k it supports an external hard drive up to 2 TB...therefore you dont need a built in hard drive...

@eternalcube valves box = fail and wiiu current gen system 7 years to late
I like the choice of sales figures Gamespot prefers to use..
You can say 308,000 units in Japan for weekend launch...
Or 600,000 units sold in 2 weeks.
I love my next gen system, if Wii U is good now, with games like Zombie Wii U, NSMB U, imagine when Mario Kart, Metroid and others comes?
@Metronoid Imagine when the real next gen systems come out.
The Xbox that supposed to be even more home theatre based everything you could ever want all in one instead of a video game system?
Please grow up every system is going to have fuck ups (did everyone get Alzheimer's and forgot about the red ring of death or the fact that PS3 is getting screwed over on a lot of multi-platform games such as Skyrim?)
Get over the fact that all next gen systems are going to suck ass.
By the way I own the PS3; Wii; 3DS; Xbox 360 sooo I'm not biased.
@UnbornCorpser @Thanatos2k @Metronoid Rumorville. Personally, as long as Sony/Microsoft don't make the mistake of trying to bundle Move/Kinect with the next consoles, the WiiU might be left with a similar power disadvantage to the Wii that'll kill all 3rd gen support. Not that that's really a problem, WiiU's best left to WiiU games rather than ports, as the launch library shows.

It'll be Major Nelson or some other high up Microsoft studios employee that nobody cares about begging Nintendo soon enough. Microsoft have had there 15 minutes, they won't get lucky twice, I doubt the Nextbox will be able to pull Xbox 1 sales!
@wcwj26 If anyone got lucky it was Nintendo, they struck gold with the Wii, it likely won't happen again though as you can see
@alrepairs @abHS4L88 @dreamfist11 @wcwj26 You clearly hate the Xbox... but I don't understand why, even after reading your entire diatribe. I had the first Xbox and liked it fine. Passed on the 360, but it's alright. But some of the things you say are just completely irrational and untrue. Microsoft abandoning the PC?? On the contrary, they're probably the only company still trying to prop up the PC in the face of Apple devices, Android tablets, etc. As for the Xbox sales variance in US vs. Japan, who cares? The US is a much larger market to begin with, and 360 has been the top selling console here for almost 3 years in a row now.
And why are you talking about things like the original Xbox controller being too big? That only lasted like a year, and that was like 11 years ago! Funny thing is I own a PS3 and not a 360, but your hatred towards the Xbox brand is just... weird.
If you're talking to me, I love how everything positive I said about the XBox just flew over your head since all you see me as is a Nintendo fanboy when I'm actually someone with competent knowledge of pretty much every major gaming system, unlike you who sucks on your XBox at night.
Look how you say the XBox had the best third party support, uh no, the PS2's third party support completely crushed the XBox and Gamecube. The main reason why the original XBox did well was for two things: 1) Halo and 2) XBox Live. Just because 3rd party games looked better on the XBox didn't mean it had the best support, if that's true then I'm sure you'd have no problems saying that the Gamecube had better 3rd party support than the PS2 because 3rd party games also looked and ran better on the Gamecube compared to the PS2. Two of the biggest multiplatform games on that time, Resident Evil 4 and Soul Calibur 2 were highly preferred on the Gamecube compared to the other consoles.
@alrepairs @abHS4L88 @dreamfist11 @wcwj26 sony took everything from the xbox 360 if you dont remember the xbox was the first system to have a built in harddrive and a real os they even had something called xbox live arcade back in 2003 on the first xbox the system also had awesome graphics Halo and Ninja Gaiden were just to of the many great games on the first xbox the first xbox also had the best 3rd party games all the 3rd party games on the ps2 always looked and played way better on the xbox so yea and the gamecube was a huge fail so if you are going to trash talk talk about the gamecube
Lol, Microsoft is pretty much doomed to not even being worth considered competition in the East but I mean, the fact that they've found success in North America and Europe makes up for it anyways.
But if I agree that the original XBox was a disaster, I'd also have to agree that the Gamecube was a complete and utter failure since it did worse than the XBox worldwide :P
@abHS4L88 @dreamfist11 @wcwj26 Ah, you disagree that Xbox wasn't a disaster...I see. You're probably right, and my hatred primarily stems from Microsoft's relentless greed and PC abandonment ^^. G4WL is a horrid abomination..and they don't want to create a formula that encourages people to buy their games, like Steampowered, instead complains about piracy.
Xbox and Xbox 360 are completely destroyed in the East. The original Xbox had numerous complaints of the gamepad and console being too big, despite having a LAN connection for netplay. I'm not talking about Japanese who live in the west...i'm referring to the Eastern hemisphere entirely.
They only sell less than 1 thousand units a week...the most being 2 thousand.
I...HATE the Xbox -_-.
I disagree, while the XBox was basically dead in the east, Microsoft used their expertise in software and took advantage of the online market, which was the main appeal of the XBox along with Halo.
The 360 was a massive step up from the original XBox despite only coming out 4 years later and part of the 360's success was luck due to the failure of the PS3's launch which drove many PS2 users to the 360.
Aside from that luck, Microsoft continued to push the importance of online play and an online store which Sony and Nintendo both recognized as very important features (Nintendo of course caught on a later than Sony).
For the 8th generation though, Microsoft will be in trouble if they don't change the way XBL is from the subscription, to the way it's ran with developers, especially Indie since Sony and Nintendo have both stepped up along with the inevitable entry of Value's Steam Box, if that's a success, Microsoft would be the one to suffer the most.
BUT we'll just have to wait and see, so far we've never seen more than 3 consoles succeed during any generation so it's going to be interesting to see what impact the Steam Box (and maybe Ouya) will have. I, for one, want to see 4 successful consoles, maybe 5 but I highly doubt that will happen.
Though Sony is going a bummer route, they are still the King of tech, to my eyes. Nintendo is like..the cracked out and open minded side for video games...regardless of being much less powerful these days.
Sony had been the reason we have Solid Snake in 3d form with Raiden to begin with, and taking game script into a realistic sense with CG video animations was revolutionary (Not the Sega CD which didn't offer the same experience). Metal Gear for NES was also great.
To be blunt, XBOX should have never existed. Sony and Nintendo are liked in both Eastern and Western culture despite infused drama, but evidence clearly shows the lackluster performance of the XBox in Japan. It isn't even mentioned. Video games from XBox are dumped in trash bins, labeled "junk".
I dunno man. Gaming PC's were cheap as hell back then, and still gave you a hardcore experience...until Microsoft attacked the console space.
Its been a REALLY long 15 minutes, bud.
