Now is the right time for new IP, says Remember Me dev

Unfortunately it all comes down to numbers for publishers. Why fund a new idea when you can milk existing hits by forcing those developers to make sequels? All we can do as consumers is to wander off the beaten path once in a while and support stand-alone games with our wallets.

I managed to get Sleeping Dogs for $30 a week after it launched due to some easily accessible promos. The game got fine reviews across the board and I ended up enjoying it a lot. It's one of those rare games these days where I bothered to take the time to finish.

Needing new IP's was never a big issue for this generation. Bioware introduced both Dragon Age and Mass Effect, Bethesda and Square Enix brought back Fallout and Deus Ex respectively. Even the vaunted franchises such as GoW and CoD got started as legitimate hits this generation and it's fine to give us sequels for them. But consumers are the ones who need to play some of these other games before publishers are willing to produce them.

Moris is right.  The install base for current-gen is HUGE right now.  Now really is the point in time to get a rabid fanbase, especially because once the next-gen launches, it'll take some time to build up steam and sell systems.  A lot of people won't even jump on board until years later, when the price drops happen.

I ALWAYS wait for the price drops.  You can often get a smaller console with more features at a lower price point with a nice game included as a bundle.  I'm holding onto my PS3 and 360 as long as possible.  I hope they don't release new stuff until 2015.  That's the right year for it, numerically.  It's a very marketable number. 

When Uncharted: Drake's Fortune was released, I thought for sure that it would go nowhere simply because it was a PlayStation 3 exclusive at a time when the PS3 installed base wasn't very big.

A few years, a few awards, and a couple sequels later, people were going back to buy the original game in order to get the complete story arc or a few more hours of gameplay with Nathan Drake.Of course, there's probably a big advantage to doing it God of War-style and releasing the game to a huge base (e.g. PS2) and then putting out a sequel for the new system (PS3) and taking your well-established audience with you.

when i come to think of it, good games, regardless of their generation, are simply good games and attract a lot of interest... their sequels attract even more people within the next generation... killzone, red dead, gow series, etc are the first ones to pop up in my head... :)

We just need great games.new IP not so important.

Remember Me reminds me of the movie Push (2009) and I really liked that movie. I hope this game will turn out good.

I don't know how EA thinks, but when looking at some of their best selling titles, I don't associate them with "something that?s new enough, that?s fresh enough, and interesting enough". Maybe that's why they're holding off until the new gen of consoles is coming, but that's just my opinion.

He's right.  We're regularly being served seconds in the same decade-old meals and the technology is making design easier by the day.  Just look at how many dumpy indy games show up in the online markets.

The right resources and talent could make a huge splash right now.  Me I'm hoping Banner Saga works out. 

Sleeping Dogs had had good reviews but terrible sales. Gamers say they want new franchises and a lot probably do, but in the end it's the same old COD shit that sells.

Major franchise? Well, I can see this already. I can't wait until Remember Me 2 is released on next-gens, and everyone will instantly forget about the first and skip it. Only because it's a loner on our current generation systems. Lovely.

My question is, when isn't it the right time for a new IP?  New ideas and concepts should always be welcomed.  Publishers are whinning because sales are down, and that's in part due to the fact that gamers are tired of playing the same old same old. 

Anytime is a good time to be original. #1 problem with games this gen.

Remember Me looks amazing.  Definitely a game I'll have to look out for.

Capcom can't even take care of their own IP, and crap on the new IP they do create (Dragon's Dogma sells a million copies and that didn't meet expectations), so why should we believe them now?

I agree but remember seems to be really bland and weak .... I am not excited about it at all :(

Black and Final Fantasy XII released towards the end of their respective console cycles, and both of those were fantastic games.The games will sell well, and may even be praised, but consumers will still forget it quickly for new hardware. 

Meh, Capcom doesn't have much. No new fighting games shown. I was hoping for a Maximo for the next gen.

I would argue that a New console is the best time to release a new IP. There are often very feww games around so the market is less saturated and new console buyers are often looking for something new and orginal to see what the new hardware can do and alos what trend the generation of games. Right no you have a large user base but new IPs get overshadowend by all of the exsiting IPs.

I know the game has been out for more than a year, but I just finished Shadows of the Damned. What a refreshing game that was! It was funny, charming, imaginative, and kept me guessing what was happening next.

Well the nostalgia of old loved IPs will always be grounds for milking out the players , but then again, life does make circles.

He's right, I don't understand this developer mentality that as soon as the the player-base gets too big, it's time to dump the system and start all over. Lots of people will still continue to use their 360 and PS3 for the next couple of years.

If by "now" he means "always", then I agree.

There is always a right time to introduce new IPs imo. Bringing new ideas to the market and expanding it instead of recycling old concepts is good in my book. We have come to a point where we even need to have new IPs, challenge each other's creativity and whatnot, and I say this to the devs; doing the same things or releasing the same games with a different name isn't gonna cut it anymore, at least not for long. Especially not with the next gen.

God Of War came out near the end of the ps2's spotlight and it continued qiute fine onto ps3 so he is right now is a good time

new IPs are fine, as long as they're not homogenized and ended up being just CoD or Gears of War with different names. I hope Capcom won't get any bright ideas and try to turn Remember Me into an Assassin's Creed clone.
