Obsidian worked on Snow White prequel

Fallout: New Vegas developer spent a year making "Dwarves" for Xbox 360 and PS3 before change of direction at Disney led to its cancellation.
Fallout: New Vegas developer Obsidian Entertainment spent a year developing a Snow White prequel before Disney canceled it outright. Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart explained to Kotaku in a new feature that the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game was to be a third-person action title focusing on Snow White's seven pals.
Tentatively titled "Dwarves," the game was conceived as a new chapter in the familiar story and development began in 2005. Its final scene was even planned, as Urquhart said the endgame would have players banishing the unnamed antagonist into Snow White's mystical mirror.
"It was a lot of fun," Urquhart said. "We feel we turned in a really cool prototype. We worked on it for about a year. It's one of the games here that the team just loved working on. And unfortunately--which, it happens in this industry--you have changes of focus at a publisher."
A CEO change at Disney led to a "total shift in direction," with the House of Mouse considering the Snow White fiction to be "untouchable." Thus, the project was cancelled, Urquhart said.

3 Like Disney games used to be succesful in the good ol'days (Aladdin for genesis anyone?).
I always wondered what happened in the last decade. Only Kingdom Hearts truly shined.
2 Like @ag_04 Aladdin and Castle of Illusion are two of my favourite games still.... and to this day, I haven't found a more pleasing sound effect than the "knock" noise Mickey's head made on Castle of Illusion when you jumped high enough to hit your head on the ceiling.... love that noise.
3 Like I know it's the nature of the business, but I would be pretty upset if I was working on something for a year and then it gets scrapped. Doesn't matter if they paid me or not. Also doesn' matter if it was a Snow White game. Wouldn't you?

2 Like The Snow White story itself is public domain. Heck so should Disney's Snow White if they hadn't petitioned to change the laws themselves. They made money off public domain and right so, but won't allow the same once their time has come.

Disney probably balked when they heard that the dwarves would be carrying assault rifles, rocket launchers, and chainsaw bayonets.
1 Like As someone who loves Obsidian Entertainment I can see this being interesting in a wierd way. Quite amazed this could have actually been something great. If Obsidian is doing something like this silently, then there may still be hope for The Black Hound.

1 Like @CUDGEdave I think that's why they cancelled the game. Snow white was probably presented the way we all want her to be shown. Having freaky sex with the 7 dwarves and having them take dumps on her.
Sounds like ti could have been interesting. I think the real fault of it being cancelled is it being a Disney game from the sound of it. Snow White is an old fairy tale, so if it had nothing to do with the Disney version and was its own take on the tale, Disney shouldn't have been able to cancel it.

The way i read it they were making the game FOR disney and a new CEO took over and cancelled the project. One would assume all the character designed and story tweaks were based on the Disney version. So...yes...they could redesign a whole game using non disney versions of the character in turn ....hurting the sales, recognition of the product, and relationship with a major corporation. Hardly worth it to make a video game that probably that many people would not be interested in
10 Like It's a shame Obsidian is kicked around by publishers so often. If it's not a project cancellation, it's a rushed release date. Obsidian has arguably one of the strongest writing teams out there and conceptually their games work well. It's simply a matter of publishers not giving enough time or resources to allow their games to flourish the way they should.
With the amount of time THQ has given Obsidian to work on Stick of Truth, it'll be interesting to see what the developer can do when they actually have the time to fully realize a project.
Obsidian is really using their talent to the fullest, and finally I'm getting my Snow White Prequel.
1 Like I always wanted a SEQUAL to Snow White where 7 Dwarfs make a militry task force to destroy the witch marfia, dragon leigon, and the princesses of doom. That would be awesome! It would have guns, explosions, different ending with differet colors, car chases, sex! But most importantly, SEX!
