PS Vita sales total 2.2M worldwide - Report

Sony's latest portable gaming hardware reaches new global sales milestone following launch in February.

The PlayStation Vita has sold 2.2 million units worldwide as of June 30, a Sony representative has confirmed to Joystiq, following a report from PlayFront.de.

The latest sales update of 1.8 million came in May, meaning the system has moved about 400,000 units since then. The PS Vita launched in February at $250.

The PS Vita will have to perform mightily if it wants to draw even with the 3DS. That system, which went on sale about a year before the PS Vita, has sold 19 million units worldwide.

Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida said last week that it is "too early" to implement a price cut for the PS Vita this year. Instead, he said he hopes software bundles like those for Little Big Planet and Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified will steer prospective buyers toward purchases.

You know for all the bad things being said about Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified, for a handheld game the online is pretty good. Sure the story is short BUT I haven't seen a COD 3DS game or any online 3DS fps game that beat it..

I'm guessing those numbers went up a bit after this past weekend.  Every retailer had a Vita bundle for $199.  The only 3DS bundle I saw was one with Mario Land 3D (a year old game) at Target, I think?

@ItsEvolution Or Amazon's deal which was even better: $179 ACIII bundle. God only knows if they'll ever offer it that low any time soon again.

Nintendo haters are looking silly now, after last year especially, and now that the Vita is clearly failing and the 3DS is thriving, you have to resort to the old mantra of calling anyone who says anything negative about the Vita Nintendo fanboys and children.

I've learned that it doesn't matter how powerful a console is if it doesn't have the software or else the Xbox would've outsold the PS2.

@Darnasian  @PillyChickle A PS Vita  is a handheld game consolemanufactured and marketed by Sony Computer Entertainment. Not to mention that it can kick any handheld console ass!!! and that's a Vita my friend.

i hope you learned one thing or two.

Every game console has a slow period after its initial "release window."  Why gamers always complain about "no new games" six months after a console's release is beyond me...maybe they're new gamers.

The hardware in the PSVita is stellar.  Compare it to your favorite smartphone -- iPhone, Galaxy S III, Nexus -- and see which one has better specs on the whole.  That smartphone without a contract probably costs two to three times what the Vita does.  It is a very forward-looking console that should be relevant for the next eight years at least.

I have high hopes for the long-term future of the Vita.

PS -- Who the hell is buying 3DSes at a 19M units sold rate?  Wow.

When you:

-don't have so many good games

-face fierce competition from the mobile market

-have a piece of **** proprietary memory card

-have weak sales of the hardware itself

You don't consider a price drop???

Zerabp
Zerabp like.author.displayName like.author.displayName 2 Like

@leeveeu It's not the console price that's the problem it's the "**** proprietary memory card" prices that need to go.

@Zerabp  @leeveeu I agree but they haven't said anything about that one way or the other. for all we know there may be a memory price drop on the way

adagio_spider
adagio_spider like.author.displayName 1 Like

@Zerabp  Yeah, 50 dollars for a 4GB memory card when there are 8GB or 16GB cards at a 10 dollars price. What the hell are they doing with that 4GB card that they need all that extra money?

adagio_spider
adagio_spider

@theKSMM I just checked prices for normal sd memory cards, at least in my country, and they're about 25 dollars for a 32GB card. A PSVita 4GB card is around 60 dollars. I don't care what software they put on it or how they modify it. The difference is beyond ridiculous.

theKSMM
theKSMM like.author.displayName 1 Like

@adagio_spider  Sony memory cards have a small bit of built-in "protection" in them.  That and the unique form factor are supposed to make it harder to copy / bootleg the console's information directly from the card.  They just pass the price mark-up on to the customers.

Consider its high res display, the amount of different control inputs it features, it's a powerful handheld. Even the 3DS is pretty advanced despite it's graphical capabilities not being as good as the Vita and that first retailed at $250.

Whoever's in charge of pricing the Vita is living in the past, someone should let them know Sony is no longer King in this industry and a price cut is absolutely necessary if they want to close the gap between Vita and 3DS sale figures.

They probably need 10 ridiculously awesome Vita titles released in the same quarter to able to move Vita units in large quantities if they want to keep prices as they are currently. Fat chance of that happening.

Hint: Make PSvita more vital, so you, Sony, can boost the real sell.

Fanboys run rampant as always. The market is saturated by all kinds of mobile devices, most of all cellphones and all kinds of other devices. Everyone is buying $300+ smartphones instead of gaming devices. I'm sure if everyone that honestly wanted one could afford it sales would be a lot better. For me, I really want one. Back catalog of PSone/PSP games I've downloaded, new games coming out, huge fan of Hot Shots Golf (Everybody's Golf) and the MLB series, I would use cross platforming a ton with that title. I just don't have the extra wiggle to get it right now. The PS Vita has a bunch of interesting titles to come this holiday season and plus it's still early in it's lifespan. The 3ds struggled out of the gate until the near $100 price cut. When a price cut hits, sales will go up. Also, just want to say... fanboys, please shut up. You're annoying, always have been. From the Nintendo/Sega days until now. Your loyalty means next to nothing to the company, unless you work for them in some marketable type of way. Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, they all have their +/-'s. So for everyone's sake, shut up. Your massive, new tabbing, googling for statics for what other people wrote about in an article doesn't make you look more intelligent. I adore Nintendo, play the hell out of Sony, and enjoy Microsoft just as well... I LOVE GAMING!

thats not very good. to put that number in perspective, at the going rate of sales, it would take the Vita nearly 7 years to get where the 3DS is out right now in sales.

Now if only they'd release some decent games, I'd have a reason to turn it back on.

Thats very suprising that it sold so well considering that there are barely any games out for it. It also had a terrible showing at E3 with Sony saying hardly anything about it. I certainly wouldn't buy it the way it is at the moment and not unless a hell of a lot more games came out for it soon.  Theres only one first person shooter out for it and its a mediocre one. Killzone has gone awol and nothing has been heard about it and theres nothing interesting from third party developers either. Sony need to do something drastic very soon or its going to be a complete flop. Its a complete shame aswell because when I saw it first I thought it looked like it would be great. Doing nothing but boasting about sales figures and talking about only 2 games for the next six months isn't going to help it.

@quinnd6 You mentioned some valid points and i agree on that. but in fact that the Vita doesn't have a lot Games, that doesn't mean its not worth buying now.The Vita came out this year on February 22, 2012.. The Console is still brand new in the Market. it just needs a little bit more time. :)

@ABEzilla116 The 3DS isn't a system from the first place. its a Toy from Toys r us. If i saw someone playing it...i would look at him and say "Awwwwww aren't you so cute"

is it that hard to add phone functions to Vita? (dont tell me about Xperia play, it was a fail). the same Vita gaming console, just with a function to write mesages and call.

@jonasas2 I don't think you realize how big PS Vita is. When I carry it with me, I do it in my hand, it's nearly impossible to stuff it in a pocket. I can't imagine using it as a phone. And btw, you got Skype and 3G, so you actually can use it as one.

BlackLense
BlackLense

@jonasas2 They can't because Vita is developed by Sony not SonyEricsson... Ericsson dont have any share at gaming market...

warhawk-geeby

Well you can add another 1 to that list Sony.. just when I get round to buying one... Need a new phone first though!

I just want to feel confident that my investment is worthwhile, at the moment the games on offer do nothing for me, neither do AC & COD though.

I'm holding back for the time being..
