PS3 v2.41 patch reinstalls trophies, in-game XMB

Sony releases revamped firmware, aiming for error-free update of award system, easily accessible media bar.

PlayStation 3 owners may be feeling a certain sense of deja vu today. That's because, as it did last week, this morning Sony announced the release of new firmware, which upgrades the console with two long-desired features. The first is in-game access to the XrossMediaBar (XMB), which will allow users to access limited PS3 features without quitting a game and allow direct access to other features without returning to the main PlayStation menu. The second is the PS3's long-in-development trophy system, which will award players for in-game feats much like the Xbox 360's achievement system.

PS3 Firmware Demo

Eric Lempel shows off how trophies and the in-game XMB will work.

While last week's v2.40 PS3 firmware update was intended to bestow consoles with both functionalities, it was quickly pulled following reports of freezing consoles. On the official PlayStation Blog, PlayStation Network director Eric Lempel also said that Sony "had to take it offline temporarily because, for a limited number of users, the XMB wouldn't display after the update was installed." Today's v2.41 update--which Lempel promised would arrive "shortly" after his post--has been adjusted to prevent such issues.

Another problem was encountered by some PS3 owners installing the v2.40 software while their controllers were physically plugged into their console--a problem which prevented said controllers from syncing. According to Sony customer support, anyone encountering said problem should perform a hard reset of the controller by pushing a pin or paper clip into a small hole at the controller's bottom.

For a full rundown of the new firmware upgrade, trophies, and the in-game XMB, check out GameSpot's previous coverage and GameSpot Hardware Insider's hands-on preview.

InuHanyou1701 - I specifically waited for everyone to download the update first. It was working fine, but after 2.41 was installed these problems began. I will say this, my PS3 has not frozen since July 13th (fingers crossed) but I still have to manually flip the off switch sometimes. I'm not lazy, but it IS suppose to be wireless so that kinda sucks.... regardless, 2.41 was still pointless, but PS3 is awesome and the next batch of games look crisp. Peace peoplez.

Sribz. Have you installed the new update? It supposedly fixes the problems you described.

wow, my system has now froze on me twice (have to manually power-off sometimes now too), thanx Sony, and thanks for the near worthless update. is anyone else having to re-sync their controller occassionally when they shut it off for a while to watch movies? WTF, is anyone else having minor troubles like this?

It'd be helpful if there was a list of games that were currently supported. Which ones are currently suported, which are retroactive, and which ones arn't? I know Burnout Is ... but what else?

Thanks soooo much for this Sony. Oh wait, except that in game music doesn't actually work in any but like 4 games right now. Oh, and the xmb doesn't work at all on PS2 games. Oh and almost no games have in game trophies yet. Other than that it's really great. I'm certainly glad I took the time to download and install it so I can use it to ummmm to hmmmm, what do I use it for again?

@Nineball2112 - atleast u understand me I understand it's a reality, but that's why it's alarming and concerning for me. Sony has seen these features on plenty other consoles, and it's been YEARS now. To me it seems every person who is satisfied or content with Sony's update I run across tells me to just "wait, it's just the beginning" but i've been waiting a long time now..... other things i've heard of course are the patent and the "online is free" argument - which should definitely not be an excuse, and if that is, then I'll gladly pay a measily $5 a month for a better full-service, I spend $7 a day on lunch alone.... Like I said, it's not that the update isn't a good thing in general, but I can't understand why people praise it like it has brought Sony's OS/ features up to speed. I'm just not impressed by it in any way shape or form.

Nineball2112

@ sribz - I hear you. I don't disagree with what you are saying at all. We did pay alot for our systems, but that doesn't mean that everything we expect to have will be there right away. Now, I'm not saying that's right... but that's reality. And yeah... it would be nice to hear from Sony why we can't currently do some of the things that we want and expect. I linked to Microsoft's patent only because another poster was flat out saying that there wasn't one and he wanted proof. Anyways, 2.41 was a great step in the right direction... now it needs to get fleshed out even more. Sony is doing a pretty darn good job as far as I'm concerned.

lets hope that the game companys update their games to take advantage of trophys

The trophy system isnt retroactive... Most games already out, will need a patch to be downloaded so that there will be trophies in that game. For games already released, its up to the game company if they want to update the game so that you can have trophies for that game. Also, I heard that in certain games you have to newly perform the feat so that you can earn the trophy. I think Burnout is like the only game that will retroactively give you trophies. Hope that helps.

Ok, so I've got the update... but I still have 0 trophies?? Do I need to load one of the games that I've completed first for it to recognize it, or do only SOME games have trophies so far... if so..... which ones??

@ShadowMasterX1 and Nineball2112 look, almost all updates are good (except if it bricks my biatch, and it has already froze and made me sync my controller). I wasn't saying the update isn't good, I'm just saying nothing has really changed, after all this time, and yes it does feel rushed. you just can't expect much from Sony's updates I guess (U said it urself). As far as legal issues, yeah, i hear people saying that, but has Sony said anything about it? i saw ur patent page, that's wonderful and all, but Sony can do it, I want to hear SONY say why some of these features weren't added...... I like my PS3 and blu-rays and all the rich media features, but it seems like people really defend Sony like they are part of their family. C'mon peoplez, we payed $400 to $600 for this thing, shouldn't we have a right to expect some cool (small) things out of it? I know the PS3 has the power to do it... and I'm getting sick of people saying some of us are spoiled or are not true gamers. I happen to like a seamless integrated experience, I like priv chat and music when I'm mashing on deathmatch, and when ur comrade jumps online you can talk to them while swapping out games or just go about ur biz while you plan with them. I know Sony can do it, so I have a right to expect more from them. I'm sorry. I own many consoles, and it started with an Atari 2600, but this is here and now....

I've also never had any problems, besides the fact that trophies don't do anything... so do trophies actually work now?

The 2.41 patch update seems to work just fine without any problems. Glad to see Sony pull the 2.40 update when it discovered the problem. Smart move on their part.

i've downloaded the 2.40, to the pc and install on the PS3, i've been playing GTA4 with no problems at all, it never froze, not even once at least till now anyway... but then again i never had problems with GTA4 and i heard a lot of people complaining about it, and i have a launch 60GB PS3, the one people are allways saying its frozing and this and that and bla bla bla... i had like 5 frezes so far and it has been over 1 year, and by the way those were all with Asassins Creed, no other game, demo, music or video has ever frozen my PS3.

And one more thing... like I said, it is possible that the patent I listed doesn't legally prevent Sony from implementing the in-game soundtrack, but a Judge would have to decide that. It's also possible that Sony, after their last legal issue with rumble control, has decided that it isn't worth taking the chance with this and has decided to go a different route... ie. letting game developers put this feature in their games.

Nineball2112
Nineball2112

@ Flavour666. Yeah, I know the first link was stating it as a RUMOR, hence why I clearly put in the link title the word "RUMOR" or did you miss that? And are you a patent lawyer? No, then how do you know whether it is applicable in this case or not? Companies are sue-happy when it comes to their intellectual property and if you followed gaming news, you'd know that suits are dropping left and right. I am also not a patent lawyer, so it's possible that this patent doesn't have any impact on what Sony is doing, but you asked for a link and I provided one. AND, when I do... you come back with... But... but... it's not applicable! Like the first link stated... the KEY points are: 1. A method comprising: - receiving a request to launch a game in a gaming system; determining whether the game has a user-associated soundtrack; - if the game has a user-associated soundtrack: launching the game; and playing the user-associated soundtrack. - if the game does not have a user-associated soundtrack: allowing a user of the gaming system to select a soundtrack to play while the game is executed; and playing a default soundtrack if the user of the gaming system does not select a soundtrack. You wouldn't be satisfied until I produced the person who actually filed the patent and got a signed affidavit from him stating what his intentions were. And it's obvious that you have MS up your **** if you think that Sony can't match it's features. On the contrary, there are features that Sony has that MS can't match (either from the feature itself or from a pricing standpoint).

Flavour666
Flavour666

@Nineball2112 The first link is a RUMOR posted on April 1st (of all days). The second link is a bona-fide patent, but not applicable in this case. The whole patent claim is about "automated" playback. In short: a system that memorizes for which game you want to play which tracks and then auto-play those tracks when you start said game. The 360 doesn't have that feature and nobody is stopping Sony from implementing it the same way 360 has it since it's launch. You should learn to read and understand these patents. They have to be *very* specific in their claims. You can't patent the manual start of a soundtrack from the consoles menu. That's like patenting hitting "play" on the CD-player. The 360 has been out for over two years now and Sony can't surpass, let alone even match, it's features. It's incompetence, nothing more. They under-estimated demand for that feature, same as they under-estimated demand for online-play and rumble.

Nineball2112
Nineball2112

@ Flavour666 Here's your proof... I'll give you two links. The first link explains a bit about the patent and why it's an issue for PS3 users. RUMOR: PATENT OF IN-GAME SOUNDTRACK Here is the SECOND link: UNITED STATES PATENT: 6981918 So ShadowMasterX1 isn't trolling. He's stating a FACT. Now Flavour666... How about you apologizing to ShadowMasterX1 for slamming him? How about you taking some time in the future to research things before posting? How about you quit being a troll yourself?

Flavour666
Flavour666

@ShadowMasterX1: MS having a patent on playing music? How about some proof? How about a link to the patent? You're a troll trying either to bad-mouth MS or trying to find excuses for Sonys' incompetence.

trophy support should come to Metal Gear Online, MGO already has some achievement features (500 Kills, 10 Consecutive Kills, etc.) so it would work out perfectly with MGO.

sribz, what do you expect? Sony has to jump through the legal hoops that Microsoft has set up to deliver. On playing the music in game, they can't use the Operating System to enable music playing across all games because Microsoft holds the patent on that. All Sony can do is enable the controller, Developers have to enable the functionality. With Chats, well, that part shows that this update was somewhat rushed so the community could have the text messages that they wanted. So a great update, just wish there was a tiny bit more

I don't think this update was that great. u still can't play music from the in-game xmb it's dev integrated and you still have to quit ur game to join chats, and at this point i don't even really care about trophies.... wasn't a bad update so far, just nothing good.....

Hi all. Bad News I tryed to update my Playstation 3 tonight and it failed and bricked it. The update download the 2.41 update fine and then it tryed to install it. Went all the way to 99% then got stuck. I left the PS3 on for about 15-20 mins to see if anything would happen. Nothing did so I had to turn it off at the mains. Tryed to turn on the PS3 again and it will not boot up. The green light comes on ok but no picture. Ive tryed the holding down the on/off button but this does not work. i didnt have the 2.40 update installed. Any body have any Idea's of how to fix this. I have / had 60GB Playstation 3

2.40 worked fine for my 80gig, 2.41 is working well currently--no problems. However I mainly use my PS3 as a BluRay player. I own about 5 PS3 games but honestly the majority of games I like are found on the 360. Both systems have served me well. I own 2 360's -Premium and 1 Elite-and they have not given me problems. If you are looking for an all-round do anything system- the PS3 is where you want to place your money. If you are looking for a Gaming system with plenty of titles to choose from, and a touch better graphics, then the 360 is where you want to place your money. I patiently await for better online features in the PSN store and the release of God of War 3 then you can bet I will be gaming plenty on the system. Kudos to Sony for implementing some great features!

combatsoldier commented "They have lost 3 billion dollars on ps3 and continue to make it a quality product." Don't forget that this has always been the plan. By selling the system at a loss it enables them to build their installed user base and then reap the rewards with software/Blu-Ray sales. This investment to build the user base up and deliver a quality product certainly served them well with the PS2, and I understand now the PS3 production costs have come down the console itself is slated to become profitable this summer/fall - months ahead of schedule. I wouldn't consider this planned expenditure a loss unless they had no hope of making their investment back in the future.

The games I want to play now are on the PS3 and this feature helps me enjoy the games and keep in contact with my buds. I am looking forward to the other games coming out for the PS3 and it will be a while before I get another game. There's also games on the 360 that I will eventually play also but I have no sense of urgency for them. This is the generation of gaming I had always hoped for and have spent more money and bought games sooner for it. I never bought a game at release for the PS1, when I got the PS2 and the Xbox the only game I bought at launch was MGS2 the rest of the games I bought till they were on the greatest\/platinum hits lists. For this generation I have bought Dead Rising along with 360, Gears Of War at launch, and Halo3 at launch. On the PS3 I bought at launch MGS4(of course), Uncharted, COD4, and Assassin's Creed. Orange Box just for the PORTAL game.

I just wanted to say thankyou to everyone for all the positive feedback on my comments. Whenever I post one it is truly sincere and I mean it. Also I just opened up my union to everyone so come and join. You are all welcome in it. On that note. The update is amazing and is working great. To be honest I havent played my 360 for about 6 months now. I actually gave it to my kid to use as a dvd player lol. That is until gears comes out. However Ps3 is the most dominant system for me right now and this year of 08 will be remembered as the year of sony. I cant wait to see what they will unveil at E3. Man im so excited. Keep up the good work sony. Your going to be around for a long long time. Sony is a brand name that we can trust. They have lost 3 billion dollars on ps3 and continue to make it a quality product. That just goes to show that they are not greedy and honestly care about us as customers and consumers. I take my hat off and personally thank you sony. YOU ROCK!
