PS4 hardware design not finalized

Sony president of Worldwide Studios apologizes for not showing hardware last night during reveal.

NEW YORK CITY--Notably absent from Sony's PlayStation 4 announcement last night was the hardware itself. During a roundtable discussion today, Sony president of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida apologized to gamers for not showing the device itself.

"I'm sorry we did not show the hardware," Yoshida said. "But we have plans from now--in February--through the year for the launch. We like to disclose things based on what we think we really want to communicate first. And next time we will talk about these things."

If Sony had shown off a PS4 unit last night, it would not have been representative of the final design. Yoshida was asked, "Is the final hardware finished?" To which he bluntly responded, "No, it's not."

It's painfully obvious they're waiting for E3, because they're waiting for Microsoft to announce the next Xbox.  Then they can respond with more reveals.  Simple marketing.

Well at least they're being honest!

If both the New Playstation and Xbox are just closed box PC's, everything boils down to which has the most impressive hardware.  Both share almost all the same titles/developers and now it seems, controllers so what's to seperate them?

If Microsoft want to come out on top, they want to throw a bucket-ton of money at the Oculus Rift and launch with a XBox exclusivity deal with them.  That would be the lock they want for the market.

Thanatos2k

@legionofme That's wrong.  The hardware is almost irrelevant.  It's the services that will make or break the consoles.  Whoever has the best services wins because the libraries, like right now, will be nearly identical.

Sony took a good strategy. Let gamers know the name of the console and the ideas that are driving its development. Give the press and the community time to discuss and provide feedback. Then respond by making any changes based on the feedback and format the E3 reveal to satisfy the requests.

It also generates a lot of buzz that will continue to generate content and keep the PS4 a releveant topic even after Microsoft announces their next venture.

If Microsoft announces the specs of their hardware before Sony, then they can adjust to match or beat them if needed. Though I doubt that is a consideration with the launch coming in the fall.

I don't what you all are talking about.  The Last Guardian bundle edition was displayed on stage the whole time.

WTF no hardware shown... I mean there are so many questions I have--- What color will it be?---- What is the shape of it?---- Will it offer anything similar to the perfect tech called the Kinect?---- So many questions... SONY you just lost a customer!!!

I don't get why people care about this so much. So what? We saw the controller, that's the important thing. I'm sure it will be fine, all of their consoles have been visually appealing. At least they didn't do like Nintendo did with the Wii U and confuse everyone by making most people think it may have just been a new controller. lol

It was very clever from Sony to not reveal physically the PS4 and the price, they are waiting to see what MS can bring to the table. MS can announce something and Sony can counter with any of these with a competitive price.

Also, they are avoiding the mistakes of revealing the console very soon like they did with PS3 around in 2005 or 2006, the white PS3 with multiple HDMI ports, around 4 USB Ports and after that, the final design it didn't had the same amount of ports.

@AlfaxD_Centauro
There's not going to be any kind of countering with prices. Microsoft and Sony are in this together. They have contacted each other and will have around the same prices,  features, specs, ect.

Err....no. Sony and Microsoft just agreed to not release their console last year, in response to the Wii U release. That's it.

@Kiaininja

I just choose to look at it another way. The ps2 and ps3 were using cell technology because Sony was co-developing cell processors with IBM. The ps4 reverts to a typical PC architecture simply because IBM has discontinued development on Cell. If anything, MS would prefer ps4's architecture to remain cryptic, because that would lead to inferior multiplats on the ps4. Why would MS want Sony to have a piece of their pie?

Kiaininja
Kiaininja

@jhcho2 Their is some truth to what SniperFire17 said, maybe not directly contact with each other but definitely indirectly  Just look at PS4's specs and you'll see that Sony is trying hard not to make the same mistakes it did last gen which is not to give its competitors any advantage by creating a radically different hardware that would make it hard for devs to easily port multi-platforms. And not to mention that the developing companies already has the tools from each console maker so it's not strange for both MS and Sony to have some info leaked to each other. From what I've seen from Sony present so far they want to keep their console specs and pricing as close as possible to MS's Next Box "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer".

I didn't postulate anything. You were the one who tried stating something as fact, and then later changed it to a personal theory. You can't even be coherent about what you say.

Waiting to find out what extra features from other systems to incorporate in their make or break PS4.

Inb4 all those high profile games they showed off not reaching the console for another 3 years after launch :b

This is why I gave up on consoles. Last Guardian should of been out years ago. I don't even want to play it anymore. Team is dead anyways.

PSYCHOV3N0M

Well DUH I could've told you THAT hence why last night they didn't show what it looks like. It's common sense. This isn't news.

I'm very sure its design might be similar to the Nintendo Wii console, but bigger and much more robust and also they might release 3 versions;Fat,Slim ans Super-Slim.I can bet on it and all might be revealed during E3 this year.Hopefully.

@max_inferno2110

What would the implications be of a "fat" PS4 be? Do you just mean a larger hard drive?

Also, to be honest, if they could make a slim version right from the get-go, they'd probably use it for their main version. The main reason they do slim versions later is because of hardware advancements.

Eddie why dont you make a negative article for the ps4 like you have twice a week for months on the Wii U.  You hack

ZERO_X02

@tommy_boy9999 Make the Wii U sound good. Tell me about its broad selection of new and innovative titles, great online features, and high hardware and software sales. Oh wait, you can't...

Don't call someone a hack when they can't find anything good to say about a sinking product. Would you prefer fluff pieces proclaiming the goodness of Mario when NSMBU is the same as the previous NSMB titles, or an actual report on what's happening?

Just make it sleek like the PS3 model 1.  Trayless with sensors instead of buttons.

And 6 USB ports.

The Playstation 4 will come in a Phat design. Then well have a Slim and a 3rd revision.

The same pattern with Playstation, Playstation 2, and Playstation 3. So it is a given Sony will do the same with Playstation 4. Hopefully Sony will give the choice of colors at launch? Black and at least 2 other PS4 colors for North America.

Vic6933
Vic6933

@Megavideogamer Absolutely agree.  Which got me thinking, as for controller colors if/when we get those will the touch pad remain black (most likely) or will it be the same color as the shell?

The thing is, the event last night was something extra, typically they wait until E3 so the since we got an "early" look and info at some PS4 stuff, I'm ok with them not showing the console.  Gotta save some things for down the road.  Also glad it's called "Playstation 4" and not Orbis.

@Vic6933 "typically they wait until E3 so the since we got an "early" look and info at some PS4 stuff, I'm ok with them not showing the console.  Gotta save some things for down the road."

They didn't hold back the look in order to save it for unveiling at another event. Did you not read the article? They don't even know what it looks like yet cuz they're still working on the design.

In case you haven't noticed, this is the first time that a console has been announced but no physical design was shown at the event of said announcement.

Umm you do realize that Orbis was only a code name right? It was always gonna be called PlayStation 4. The PS brand name alone resonates within the gaming world. Calling it Orbis would confuse many people out there kind of like when Nintendo unveiled the Wii; everyone was like WTF???

PSYCHOV3N0M
PSYCHOV3N0M

@Vic6933 Orbis was never gonna be the name. It was just a code name. Same way the Nintendo GameCube was code-named "Dolphin".

What else could they call it that would actually make sense? PS360 wouldn't work for example cuz Microsoft beat them to it. PS4 is expected at least in the U.S. They can rename it whatever they want in Japan if the culture over there is that sensitive.

Look at Biohazard being used over there in Japan but over here it's known as Resident Evil.

PS4 was the only logical name to use for Sony.

Vic6933
Vic6933

@PSYCHOV3N0M @Vic6933 Relax dude.  They happened to not have the design of the console finished but even if they did, I still doubt they would have shown it here. Once again this was more of an early look rather than a full reveal.  They did reveal a lot, more than expected, but they didn't have too.

You are aware that there were rumors that the PS4 might have been called the Orbis or something else other than "4" right?  You must not be aware, because then you'd know that the rumor stemmed for the fact that "four" sounds very similar to the Japanese word for die (or death I think).  Come one man.

I agree that the PS name resonates within the gaming community but that doesn't guarantee anything.  If you kept up with news on the PS4 you would have known that's what I was referring to.

What I don't really understand is why does it only have 8gb of RAM and not 16gb? I would have thought that having 16gb would have made it more powerful and gave more in the long run.

@jmr1986  Quoted from Wikipedia about PS4 8GB system memory:"Memory will be unified, meaning that the console lacks dedicated video RAM; all RAM is shared between processing and graphics capabilities. This feature has been found in past consoles such as the Xbox 360.".

Pikdum

@Jarten 8gbs of RAM is more than enough for a console. Most PC's have little use for more RAM than that and PC's run many different processes simultaneously.

Jarten
Jarten

Okay.  The only reason I was asking was because I was thinking that with having more polys in the games that more RAM would be needed to to keep it running more smoother.
