I still don't understand how such a glitchy game gets stellar reviews AND sells a but load of copy's in this day and age.
NPD reports Rockstar's Western sells nearly 1 million as Xbox 360 tops Wii; Tiger Woods 11, Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker fail to crack top 10; industry down 9% year-to-date.
Game industry watchers must be feeling a sense of deja vu today. Two weeks after the NPD Group reported Red Dead Redemption was May's top game, the NPD Group reported that Red Dead Redemption was June's top game. Rockstar Games' critically praised open-world Western sold 582,900 units on the Xbox 360 and 380,300 units on the PlayStation 3, for a total of 963,200 units--down just over a half-million units from its overall haul the month before. The figure now makes it the best-selling game of 2010 to date, according to NPD.
That wasn't the only way the two months resembled each other. May saw overall US sales of game software, hardware, and accessories fall 5 percent, an unexpected drop. June saw overall game sales of $1.1 billion, a 6 percent slip from the prior year's $1.17 billion haul.
That's where the similarities end, however. While May saw hardware sales fall 20 percent, June saw them rise 5 percent, thanks to the introduction of the new slimline Xbox 360. Though still behind the DS's 510,700-unit tally, Microsoft's console sold 451,700 units, beating the Wii's 422,500-unit total. The PlayStation 3 was in fourth with 304,800 units, followed by the PSP with 121,000 units.
"Hardware sales saw a notable uptick from May on an average sales per week basis, and all three current gen console systems saw unit sales increases over last year; in particular, the Xbox 360 and the PS3," said NPD analyst Anita Frazier. "The Xbox 360 experienced its second largest non-holiday month after September '07 when Halo 3 launched, and the PS3 has now garnered 11 consecutive months of year-over-year unit sales increases."
Also in contrast to May's 4 percent software spike, June saw software plummet 15 percent. A major factor in this was weak sales of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11, which failed to even crack NPD's top 10. Also MIA were such June releases as Green Day: Rock Band, Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker, and Transformers: War for Cyberton.
"The new Tiger Woods release sold only 32 percent of what last year's release sold in its introductory month at retail," summarized Fraizer. "That said, last year's game saw a huge sales increase over previous versions, but still, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 did not break into the top 10 games for the month."
Indeed, NPD's top 10 looked a lot like May's, with the Xbox 360 version of Red Dead Redemption riding high. Behind it was Super Mario Galaxy 2 with 548,400 units, followed by the PS3 edition of Red Dead Redemption. In fourth was New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which sold 200,900 units eight months after it was released last November. Another release from that month, Ubisoft's Just Dance for the Wii, rounded out the top five with 174,800 units.
The final five of the top 10--which NPD does not provide sales figures for--were Wii Fit Plus, Toy Story 3 for the DS, UFC 2010 Undisputed for the 360, Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4 for the Wii, and UFC 2010 Undisputed for the PS3.

Tiger Woods got the shaft do to EA's Online Pass bs. lol!! That's what they get for forcing gamers who buy used copies to pay more money just to play the game online. EA should expect to see ALL their games that have Online Pass to has 25-30% lower sales. Next time think before you screw us gamers. I'll never pay full price for any EA or 2K sports game again. Never!
I'm really upset that NPD group has become so lazy that they won't release numbers for rankings 6-10. VChartz is useful but they count "Americas" which is muddled primarly by Canadian sales as well minor sales to Latin America. I'd like to know what sold in the USA (only) besides the top 5 thank you. On the numbers, no surprise that X-Box 360 outsold the Wii with the new slim giving a nice jolt to sales. It's going to be similar to how the PS3 slim fared and only be temporary, by the end of the year (if not the start of Q4 2010 in October) the Wii will be ahead again. Not surprised that Red Dead and SMG 2 ruled last month. Nothing in June came close to toppling those two. Peace Walker was the closest but historically the portable games have sold more Japan than in the United States (while for the console versions, it is vice versa). I bet that July will also be down with software unless Crackdown 2 sells a million or more in the month, which I don't think is likely. Starcraft II won't count because its' a PC exclusive game and this NPD is for consoles only.
Kojima should have developed Peace Walker for PS3. I guarantee you it would have made the top five if he had.
@flinet91 I do not like the gta games very much. for the reasons that I find them very repetitive and boring. Red dead redemption however, is one of my absolute favorite games of all time. The story has alot to do with that though. But just to let you know, there are people who like this and dislike GTA.
RDR was a good game, its not perfect and lacks replay value but otherwise is a very solid game and I was very happy with the $60 I spent on it
@ Nightrain76 thats how i feel with the GTA games, okey first hour then its just gets to repatative (spelling?). But if you say RDR is the same i might just not buy it, too bad it looked kinda nice, with the coop really nice actually
Happy that Rockstars is enjoying much success with this new IP. This could allow them to give it even more time before going full throttle with the next gen GTA--that IP needs a long sabbatical.
RDR is an over-rated game. Not worthy of a 9.5. I would give it more like an 8.0. I don't know. I just get bored when I am in a mission and John is having a conversation with someone for 5 minutes until we reach our destination. The missions all have the same feel. I would give this game more of an 8.0. This game is nothing ground breaking.
Not surprised about Tiger not making the top 10, especially after the whole Online Pass thing. They need to only put a new one out every 2-3 years and offer additional courses in between, both through DLC and retail packs with several courses. That way there might be some real improvement between installations. BTW, why doesn't Take2/2K Sports do something with the Links franchise? They got that when they bought the rights from Microsoft for Amped and Top Spin, but have not made a game yet. Someone needs to step up and challenge EA in that department.
RdR... still deeply in love with this game. And Rockstar's news release last week (in which they have outlined their plans for the rest of this year's DLC!) sound spectacular, and a lot of fun. I've already had to re-set my rating for this game from 8 to 9.50 (I'd give it a straight 10 if the servers weren't so finnicky with free-roam and pvp login).. but no. this remains my most played this year so far. It's because of RdR's free-roam - it's practically taking a left hook at MMO! and given it a Rockstar edge - and it's weighty long single player campaign (for which I am sure there will be more big expansion to come) that there are currently two xbox's and xbl accounts in my house for co-op :) hats off. great value for money. Lots of fun to be had all round
To be honest, it looks like nintendo, sony, and microsoft are all doing well, especially when compared to last-gen. Good for gamers imo
eh after the story i kinda went back to GTA the multiplayer just feels empty after playing it a few times
its great that the consoles are doing well but am worried about the exclusive games where are they on the charts, yes i love exclusives without them console wars will be boring
i bet the x360 will carry this momentum till next year after the release of gears 3 so ps3 fanboys sorry the ps3 wount be closing in on the x360 any time soon, even the wii may be stuck on 2nd spot untill next year with reach and kinect comming this fall @SalarianChemist agreed, ps i also bet ms is very proud of how you always on thier side
damn lot of 360's must of broke, Good to see Red Dead Redemption selling good hopefully they'll make another one
Xbox 360 has actually outsold the Wii two months so far this year, according to NPD sales numbers of North America. Considering that Halo: Reach and Kinect are going to be released this fall, along with the new Call of Duty game launching with content exclusive to the Xbox 360, I certainly doubt this will be the last time Xbox 360 outsells the Wii in North America. I really think Microsoft deserves to be congratulated for their excellent performance in North America, the United Kingdom, Mainland Europe, and Asia. Also, it's probably worth pointing out that although we knew from the start of this generation that the Xbox 360 (an American product) would finish a distant third in Japan, nobody ever expected the Xbox 360 to reach over 1.5 Million consoles sold in Japan. This is an impressive sales milestone that is the result of all the great JRPG games released for Xbox 360.
No good games except 4 Red Dead Redemption, and Green Day Rock Band have came out this year, oh and Skate 3,
man mgs tanked on the psp this time.......shame.......it's a gr8 game.......the same fate with gta - chinatown........
One look at the game sales and you know the casuals have taken over the video game market. I suppose that is a good thing. Sony really has lost their touch in the States though. At least here in Japan they are going strong. I still do not understand why people would continuously purchase a system that fails so much though. Must really be addicting. Oh, and to the twit two spots below me. William Wallace was Scottish. Your comment has no relation to what you are trying to proclaim.
when i seen that the 360 was the best selling console in the usa. it almost felt like sir willaim wallace just yelled freeeeeeeeeeedom!!!! WTG american console
First of all RDR rocks so no suprpise there kicking it again in June on top. Lol ya think implosion of Tiger Woods didnt effect his game of course it did. I love watching him golf when hes good, but man when hes bad hes a big baby. Furthermore, why do most sports games try to put one out every year, I think they would do a little better to let their franchise breath a little.
I really need to buy Red Dead soon. Must be a great game with the number of people buying it and the solid reviews it has recieved. Nice to see the PS3 and 360 selling strong again. With the PS3's apparently being resupplied to retailers (Walmart) and the 360's boost from the new model, i hope this they both continue to sell good. It's good to be a gamer. :)
-Kamuifei- RDR is the only decent game thats come out this year so far, for the 360 and PS3 that is.
bluepuppy82 The ps3 has closed the gap in worldwide sales to from 7 million to 5 million thats how ppl know its selling well somewhere else
RDR fully deserves the number 1 spot.it is by far the best game of 2010.until big releases in fall it will hopefully stay No.1
No surprise there since RDR was the only decent game out there at the time. SMG2 too if you have a Wii.
