Scrolls nearing alpha with new trailer

Minecraft developer's new collectible-card strategy game will include single-player, multiplayer, deck building in first release.
Scrolls, the next project from Minecraft developer Mojang, is nearing closed alpha with a new gameplay trailer to show for it. Upcoming plans for the collectible-card strategy game were detailed in a post on the game's website.
The alpha will include multiplayer and single-player matches, as well as a deck builder, which will allow players to choose from the more than 100 cards currently implemented in the game. Scrolls will be made available for purchase after it enters closed beta, for a reduced price and with "added benefits."
Though the alpha will give players a good idea of the game's basic systems, it will not be feature complete. "We will still have a big bag of goodies that we plan to include over time, such as an auction house where you may buy or sell scrolls from each other and additional features in the world such as character customization, items, quests and so on," the blog post states.

1 Like This looks cute, but it seems like a waste of development effort. Why go and make an uninspired, already-seen-before game instead of pushing the boundaries of your gigantic hit game? It's like buying a donkey when you already have a racing horse.
With Terraria no longer being supported, there's no better time than now to bring Minecraft some new content milestones. Hell, you can charge ~$5 for every expansion and people (including myself) would pay. It's pretty much a guaranteed source of revenue, considering how many customers the game has had so far. Of course, Mojang is still an indie developer, and they can do whatever they want.
Is it just me or does this look alot like Etherlords meets Heroes of Might and Magic? Not sayin' I won't give it a shot, Mojang is on good terms with me since Minecraft, I only hope that this doesn't prove to me that Minecraft was a lucky shot in the dark for them.
Not really interested. This just makes me want to play HoMM3. But you know what I'd really like to see? A new Guild Wars game with an improved CCG/skill system. I really liked the CCG hybrid game idea of GW1, before pvxwiki and the power creep introduced in the expansions took over. GW2 steps far away from CCG-style systems and into regular-MMO territory as far as I can tell.
@Slagar You ought to check out the Secret World when it releases next month, then. No classes, so every ability is open to everyone, which is what I wanted to see from GW, but didn't. You choose 7 active abilities, and then 7 passive abilities as you unlock them. I always wanted to see GW with passive abilities, too. To me, it is a modern, improved GW, with admittedly dated graphics.
CCG meets Plants vs Zombies meets Heroes of Might and Magic is my take on this concoction. I'm mildly interested, if the cards are diverse enough, balanced, clever combinations instead of the one killer deck, I'll give it a spin in beta if the price is right.

This game looks so dull and boring- I can't believe Bethesda actually went to the trouble of taking Mojang to court for this...
honestly find it kind of stupid. compared to minecraft this really isnt that great. minecraft was creative, and open world and cool and you could find new things .. this .. seems like a magic the gathering type ..rip off. Kinda lame honestly. Im sorry gotta say it.
They should stick with Minecraft, this looks like Magic: The Gathering meets final fantasy (Which I believe another game already made something like this, I just cannot think of it on top of my head. And oh yes! it looks better.. You know the one where they have not completed yet. You know the one that is not completely done. The one where they said they are having a hard time updating when others that only have 2 people total in updating their mods far surpassed their whole time. Come on guys, honestly thought they would advance much in the genre when they have millions of dollars on a product that is not even complete?! hahahahahahaha
So this is the new Skyrim? The Elder Scrolls 6. I can't wait to take an arrow to the knee. Oh wait.. cards. Is this is a troll? ARE YOU TROLLING ME BETHESDA????
@Taffelost Please don't tell me you think this is an elder scrolls game, or in your words "the new Skyrim"? this game is from Mojang! You know, the people who made Minecraft?? In fact bethesda recently took them to court for using the name Scrolls- in case you've been living under a rock...

i'm so disappointed in Bethseda i still cant bring myself to play there games.
looks pretty fun and addicting.... nothing exactly original from what I can see here but if it's done right I'm sure I could drop several hours playing it
1 Like Wow, good thing Bethseda sued Notch for the name of Scrolls. The two games look so much alike that it would have been confusing when buying them online, I might have bought the wrong one!
I'm hoping Scrolls comes close to the fun of playing competitive Magic: The Gathering, because I'm no longer willing to spend $100-300 a year on new MTG cards.
Well, everyone's already seen how creative the Minecraft guys can be, so I will give them the benefit of the doubt here. I occasionally enjoy ccg's, so who knows, this could be fun.
1 Like It seems like the only card game I'm ever going to be able to play is Yu-Gi-Oh. Other than the crappy anime the card game itself is pretty good. I've tried Magic and it's too restrictive for my tastes, I can't get into how the defending player decides exactly how the attacker's battle is going to take place. It's too backwards for me. Plus from what I've played of Magic 2012, it doesn't even let you construct a deck from scratch which is where most of the fun of the Yu-Gi-Oh games comes from.
Anyway this looks like a flash game to be honest. There's nothing inherently wrong with that but I can't spend hours and hours on a flash game. Even though I don't know anything about the mechanics of the card game it surely doesn't look interesting, which is what a trailer is supposed to be designed for... to garner interest.
Seeing a lot of negativity here. I'm not gonna pass judgement on Scrolls, if nothing else it could make a decent Arcade-style game.

1 Like Minecraft is a good game, but this Scrolls... I am not playing it. I think it would be to better to work on Minecraft 2. With new features like; tech trees, transportation that's not on rails, new weapon classes, friendly and enemy factions, story, etc. Yeah there are mods, but I am talking about a new game.
I don't see how Scrolls comes close to gaming hit that Minecraft is.
@nilfheim123 @jon2435 Minecraft 2 would have better, more stable code with the knowledge and greater funds gained from Minecraft.
1 Like @ArcherRO The issue was that Bethesda felt Mojang's game "Scrolls" would confuse people into believing it was somehow related to the Elder Scrolls. There are a lot of short-hand terms fans use to refer to Bethesda's Elder Scrolls series, such as TES and Scrolls for shorthand. Bethesda just wanted to prevent potential confusion.
Honestly, I look at any Elder Scrolls game ever released and feel that each individual game on it's own would, and will, completely crush Mojang's Scrolls game. Because of Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim, I'll always think The Elder Scrolls any time I hear "Scrolls".
@ArcherRO Bethesda never said they owned a word. They said that Scrolls could possibly refer to The Elder Scrolls and that Mojang shouldn't use a word that's way too general as a title for a game, especially when it's used by fans for another game.
@Maxx_the_Slash I'm not trying to defend Mojang.I just think it is wrong for someone to take ownership of a word.That's all.
@ArcherRO Scrolls is too vague of a name. It's not just going to cause confusion with The Elder Scrolls, but any other game with Scroll or Scrolls in it's title (The Magnetic Scrolls, The Scrolls of Abadon, Paladin Quest: The Scrolls Of Talmouth, etc).
No one should be copyrighting games with titles as simple as Scrolls. What if someone else comes along and makes a game that has that word in the title? I bet Mojang would jump all over it the same way Bethesda went after Mojang.

1 Like Meh....a card playing game? Way to show Big Game Developers "how its done" Mojang. Totally passing on this. why play this in game form when I can just rock Magic the Gathering and have more fun while doing so?
