Shippin' Out May 14-18: Shrek the Third

Activision leads the week's releases with game adaptations of the giant green ogre's latest theatrical outing.

With Shrek the Third debuting in theaters this week, its expected multiplatform video game adaptations follow suit. Otherwise, the release drought continues on, with a few new Nintendo DS offerings, a rash of canon-worthy downloadable classics, and a few late-arrival ports also turning up this week.

It's not a blockbuster feature film these days unless a multiplatform, video game extravaganza accompanies it. As it did with Spider-Man 3 two weeks prior, Activision is bringing Shrek the Third to nearly every conceivable platform, with the noted exception being the PlayStation 3. And because nearly every platform has a different developer, it is possible there will be more versions of the game than iterations of the Shrek franchise.

Fitting nicely with Nintendo's prediction that it will sell 22 million portable units this year, the Nintendo DS is the one platform that's seen a steady stream of releases. This week continues that trend, with a trio of original games releasing for the handheld, including: Code Lyoko, an anime-inspired action adventure from The Game Factory; Etrian Odyssey, a turn-based role-playing game from Atlus; and Touch the Dead, a zombie-slaying shooter from developer Dream On.

The Wii sees several retro classics hitting its Virtual Console shelves this week, courtesy of its great-great-grandpappy the Nintendo Entertainment System. The NES versions of Tecmo's Ninja Gaiden and Namco's Pac-Man can now be added to Wii owners' virtual collections, landing at 500 Wii points ($5) apiece. Also arriving on the Virtual Console this week is Irem's Ninja Spirit, the Turbo Grafx-16 side-scroller from 1990. In other what's-old-is-new-again news, Resident Evil 4 finally makes its way to the PC, while MLB 07: The Show and Major League Baseball 2K7 round third and head for home on the PlayStation 3 and Game Boy Advance, respectively.

Tom Magrino has covered the games industry since 2006. He's been compared to Steve Martin by Ozzy Osbourne and Daniel Craig by Tim Schafer. His voice, heard largely on GameSpot's podcast, recalls that of Kermit the Frog. It ain't easy bein' Magreen.

Yawn Wha... Wii what? Damnit, please stop listing the VC games as NEW releases. These are old releases. Very very old releases. Sure; announce it of course, but seperate from the NEW releases. PLEASE!

They don't need a Shrek for the PS3 when you got the PS2 version right there.

Lol,Shrek the Third game...why do they even make stuff like that!I mean come on,not even a child would be fooled into buying stuff like that.Just watch the movie if you're a fan and that's all that matters. One surprising thing is that Cars was a top seller, so cross-platform can lead to success in some cases. But knowing that the past Shrek games have failed miserably,I don't expect too much out of this one. As for Ninja Gaiden, very naaaaaaaace.

Nickfury101 "wtf why not ps3?" Because PS3 is the new Gamecube meaning little to no third party support. what is little to no third party support?

Nickfury101 "wtf why not ps3?" Because PS3 is the new Gamecube meaning little to no third party support." I think the Wii is the new gamecube... if you want to compare the number of good third party games that aren't on the wii to the ones not on the PS3... your gonna regret making that statement I only need two games... oblivion... and GTAIV... yeah do I really need to continue...

No thats not the reason it that only about 1.5 people in the U.S. have a Ps3 and we are hardcore gamers so who needs shrek. If anyone really wants Shrek they can just buy the ps2 version and play it on the ps3. who cares about Shrek anyway i finally get my hands on The Show for the ps3. Oh yeah the ps3 is the new gamecube that is why it runs rampant with game cube ports ( Zelda Paper Mario) has a gamecube memory card and controller slot and marginally better graphics.

JSharpe_187

Who would actually buy Shrek the Third?
