Activision attempts to defend its skateboarding turf from encroaching competition; Prince of All Cosmos debuts on the Xbox 360, and Rockstar's ping-pong sim bounces onto Nintendo's console.
Until last month's release of Electronic Arts' Skate, the Tony Hawk series hadn't faced any legitimate competition in the skateboarding genre for years. This week, the aptly named Tony Hawk's Proving Ground will give the series the opportunity to show it can still defend its turf from all comers by adding nail-the-grab and nail-the-manual mechanics to last year's introduction of the nail-the-trick mode. Proving Ground will be available for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, PlayStation 2, and Nintendo DS.
Rolling into stores alongside Tony Hawk will be Beautiful Katamari for the Xbox 360, the first installment of Namco Bandai's quirky hybrid game to arrive on the current generation of consoles. Players once again pick up the role of the Prince of All Cosmos and roll ever-expanding Katamari clumps around in an attempt to make the largest spherical accumulation of random junk possible.
Fans of Nintendo consoles are a bit spoiled for choice this week, given that the DS release slate consists of nine games, most notably the new Touch Generations game Flash Focus: Train Your Vision in Minutes a Day, as well as the self-explanatory anime-based Fullmetal Alchemist: Trading Card Game. Meanwhile, the Wii will welcome a new Victorious Boxers game, Rockstar Presents Table Tennis, Guilty Gear XX Accent Core, and Ultimate Duck Hunting.
On the downloadable front, the Wii Virtual Console sees its first TurboGrafx-16 CD release, Gate of Thunder (800 Wii points, or $8), along with the NES action game Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos (500 Wii points, or $5), and the Super Nintendo sci-fi strategy game Metal Marines (800 Wii points, or $8). This week's Xbox Live Arcade Wednesdays releases will be the futuristic sports game Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe as well as Q Entertainment's trippy shoot-'em-up game (without shooting), Every Extend Extra Extreme (both 800 Microsoft points, or $10).

BTW, Every Extend Extra Extreme (AKA "E4") was effing sweet!! Kind of ironic though that a PSP game would show up on XBLA; you'd at least think it'd also be on PSN. I downloaded it last night about 2am. Gave it about 30 minutes before going to bed. And I picked up Beautiful Katamari this morning. Can't wait to get home and play it.
I have never played sk8e, but the tony hawk games are awesome, I seriously hope that activision continues to beat down EA, a serious victory would be that proving ground demolished sk8.
I played the demo for this game and the first thing i noticed was that the graphics were really bad and the gameplay wasnt too fun either. I prefer Skate way more than this game, but who knows, the demo might have just sucked.
2 games here interest me the most beautil katamari and avatar ,also ultimate duck hunting but i dnt have wii . and tony hawk is alright .
After demo-ing both THPG and Skate, Skate is the new champ in skate boarding games! The Hawk man will have to fly elsewhere...
awww, I was looking forward to hitting up EB Games after work but Beautiful Katamari doesn't come out until tomorrow
Just another off week after Halo so that people can build back their wallets for Guitar Hero 3 in two weeks... Yea Proving Ground is just another TH remake, and I don't have enough time to spend 5 min. doing 5 tricks in skate using the sticks for each... so no skating games for me this year, too many other good games to waste my money. But hey with Proving Grounds you get a GH3 demos lulz... or wait two weeks for the real thing for only $40 more
What the heck is Fish Tyccoon? Do you play as a fish who just happens to be a tyccoon? Or do you run a dockside fish market? Oh well, I'm sad to say that Fish Tyccoon is the hilight of this list.
Awesome, Metal Marines! I still have that for my SNES, but I could play some VC goodness to avoid dragging it out. Man,....I played that to death....
SaxxyGamer18 Katamari? When is that series going to just die? Those games are terrible! Katamari pwns.=/
Yay Tony Hawk's Proving Ground. Not that it's a good game... I just want to play the Guitar Hero 3 demo. Maybe I'll rent it....
Nothing too exciting this week besides Tony Hawk. That one does look interesting but I'm still a little skeptical of it. Hopefully the review will clear things up.
Umm. Beautiful Katamari is a Roll Playing Game RPG not a Role Playing Game RPG. I think MasterChief725 is just being clever.
Wow, SPEEDBALL 2, I forgot all about that game! I wore that game out on the Genesis back in the day.
MasterChief725 Beautiful Katamari! Oh yeah! I cant wait! Another great 360 RPG! i ts not a rpg dude i just had to tell u because this is twice i seen u post this. its a puzzle game lol
I think Beautiful Katamari looks awesome and have been waiting to play it since I first downloaded the demo.
another week of not having any good ps3 games to rent... dont like tony hawk anymore. and i already deleted my files of oblivion after returning it to gamefly. so i dont think ill rent the goty edtion. having the orange box woulda been nice this week =(
