Sony introduces 'Day 1 Digital' campaign

Publisher offering 8 titles including Resident Evil 6, Assassin's Creed III, and MoH: Warfighter as day-one downloads in October; some available at $54 for PS Plus preorders.

PlayStation 3 gamers won't need to leave their homes to pick up some of October's biggest games. Sony announced today a new campaign called "Day 1 Digital" that lets gamers pick up eight big-name titles through the PlayStation Network day-and-date with their retail arrival.

These titles include Resident Evil 6, Assassin's Creed III, Medal of Honor Warfighter, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, Dishonored, NBA 2K13, Doom 3: BFG Edition, and 007 Legends.

Sony also announced that gamers who hold a PlayStation Plus subscription and elect to preorder titles will be able to download select games at a reduced rate. PS Plus members who preorder Doom 3: BFG Edition can get the game for $36 instead of $40, while Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit and NBA 2K13 will be available for $54 instead of $60 for those who plunk down a reservation fee.

Additionally, 007 Legends will be available to PS Plus subscribers during launch week at a 10 percent markdown. The game will retail for $60, meaning gamers can save $6 by purchasing the new James Bond title October 16-23.

I've ran out of room on my PS3 now, with all the free games psn + keeps giving me.

Almost full price with digital distribution 1st day won't cut it for me, ever. If I get games on Steam is always because the deals (wich certainly are more a fair thing since you never see the retail).

I'd easily pay a little more for a hard copy of a game over a download that you don't know if you'll be able to access 2, 3, 4 years down the line. And yet, I rarely have to. Retail is almost always cheaper than digital, even on PC, because the pricing is dictated by actual market forces as opposed to publishers deluding themselves about how much the game really is worth.

I've picked up the odd game off PSN in the past, but with the download speeds of some of them, it would be quicker to jump in the car and go and pick the damn thing up on disc.

And I really fail to see how not having to leave the house is a bad thing. I work at home, I play games at home, and have little opportunity to leave the house. Actually getting fresh air is A Good Thing(TM), but some people seem to be allergic to it.

Buy all these games digitally and then lose them just like the digital comics lol

@SterlingTerror Im sure we lost digital comics because they werent popular i mean how many people really bought those as opposed to how well GAMES sell.. IF we ever lost our digital games it would probably be well after PS4 or 5 is out (and its priced cheap enough that everyone who wants one can afford it) thus wed be too busy playing those to give a crap about our old ps3 games anymore).. its not like theyre comic books that are gonna go up in value the longer I keep them

Within the next gen consoles I think we will see a much stronger push for digital sales. CD will cease to exist within 5 - 7 years and most music will be listened digitally. Same thing with games; we went from giant cartridges to CD-based discs and now there is the digital alternative.

Dare I say it, in TWO console generations we may see ALL games go the digital route. From Books to movies... all things are downloadable now....

feels like too big of a commitment. i'd rather buy the game retail version of a game on disc, play it, let my gf play it at her house if she likes, then stick it on my shelf waiting for coming soon stuff (expansions, bug fixes, dlc, etc.) or sell it to amazon or wait for gamestop's 50% trade in credit weekend. i bought tekken tag 2 and didn't like it, traded it back in for like $40 bucks, and bought DOA, and loved it. spent 80 instead of 120.

if they want to force Downloaded content, they should hand out free hard drive expansions.

Doom 3, a game released what, 10 years ago, needs paid Downloadable Content?

@Casey1967 Digital download games are a dumb way to go. they need far more hard drive space on consoles before they think about doing this. yes its okay for a few games but not for your whole library. Buying your game from a business is the best way to keep it and everyone should support this man.

There are way more benefits of having the disc version, you can re-sell the game if u dont like it or need the money, you can trade it and loan it to your friends and you can also borrow off your friends.

With Digital Downloads its locked on your console and once your console is full you need a new hard drive, no good for keeping your whole library of games on there. you cant sell the download or loan it to friends either.

Not big on digital downloads, but at least they're giving you a discount.

I prefer a retail copy.  I like digital so that I don't have to get up and change discs, but my only question is when are they going to come out with a 6 disc changer for my PS3.  That's what I want.

Buy a digital copy a that's the same or more expensive than a hard copy??? They save on producing the discs, packaging, in-shop marketing, shipping AND it destroys competition in the market place in one hit. Where are you going to shop around to find the best price? Unless they allow retailers to sell digital copies and compete on prices, like they do now, they can go and do one. As an example they have Borderlands 2 available to download for £49.95. You can get it for about £32-35 if you shop around.

now I have another reason to hate sony any body who supports this will eventually regret it when we are all forced to buy digital if we let sony and microsoft think its ok we will all be fucked I dont mind buying games digital if there cheap most I would pay is 20 if they sell AAA titles that cheap then they would have my vote. I dont see digital content worth 60 bucks no way not when I lose all rights to sell or trade it

Ravenlore_basic
Ravenlore_basic

ITS a good IDEA, but the fact of the matter is, unless you do not have a car, or other time constraints, it would take about as much time to go buy the game as it would to down load it.

The games would need to be a lot cheaper for me to think about buying games this way.

I really don't get why some people are going against this. It's actually pretty convenient, and no one is stopping you from buying a retail copy. This is great for people who live in countries where games are expensive and take long as hell to reach local stores. Sony is actually helping lots of people. Damn, some people just come to the comments section to complain about everything...

Ravenlore_basic
Ravenlore_basic

@Weskerzx95 This is true.  But for the thousands of us who live in LA its only at max 5 minutes away to pick up a game.

Weskerzx95
Weskerzx95

@Ravenlore_basic I know, like I said, I just look at it as another option, you guys buy retail, while we buy digital. Everyone buys their game the way it's best for them. Companies are not going to stop selling hard copies if it gives them money, and since the US plays a big role on the gaming market, they will still keep them, so It really is better for everyone.

You really dont understand do you? What Sony and MS are telling you is this is convenient and that there doing us a favor, and this is 49% true, it is! but what this is really a push for or i should say the 51%  is to get rid of hard copies of games. they want you to buy digital, they make more money off of digital. There is no case and book, no disk copy, no shipping, plus the more hard drive space you use the more space you need to buy. And last but most important, you cant trade  in a bad game if you dont like it. Or even trade in a older good game to purchase another game,  with digital it clearly states that they are NO REFUNDS WITH PURCHASE. Tell me if you buy a game and then a few hours in you decide that you dont like the game,  how are you going to get your money back? the answer is you cant, but at least with a hard copy you can get some of your money back. pluse you can use games as trade in money for new games, cant do that with digitall. MS, Sony and other game development studios all know that they lose money from this and it helps us save money. i can use the extra money, im not rich but MS and Sony are and they just want to get richer. and this is just one example of why hard copies are better i dont have the time to name all the other reasons.

@hajjjustin @Weskerzx95 I hate to break it to you, but this the way the future is headed. Into the next generation of consoles you will see more and more digital distribution. Hopefully, they will get a better pricing model in place, though.

@hajjjustin I get what you're saying, but I like to think of it as another option. And I totally agree with you, retail games are indeed better, I'm not going to say why since you know most reasons, but say, do you live in the US or Europe? If you do, then it's better, but me for example. I live in South America, games and consoles are ridiculously expensive here (Somewhere around 120 bucks one game, that's 200 R$, wich is the local currency here) and not to mention they take time to arrive at stores. I really enjoy playing games, and with digital downloads, the price I have to pay for a full game is halved, plus, I can play it on launch day or shortly after. Selling games here isn't really worth it since a used game is worth around 15 bucks if you trade it in a store, so for me and other local gamers it's just not worth it. Not to mention there is gameshare on PSN, wich is also helpful when you have friends who can't afford the same games as you. If you live in the US for example, you really should buy the retail copy of the game since it has all those benefits, but for people who are in the same situation as me, it's an opportunity

Amazing how people can be so incredibly ignorant about this, badwidth and servers are not free and a lot of you people still think that a 50% of the cost of the game comes from the case, the disc and the manual rofl...

As i've said before, more options for everyone is a good step, not everyone lives on the US or UK.

Kinda a kool idea for those who don't mind digital stuff. I'm not really into this market cause I like many others like to resell games that I should have never purchased in the first place. Those game ya know the 1 play through an ur done. The god of wars games which were epicly awesome games, but very much lack true replay value. And what's all this hate on psn? Hello this about psn. If u don't like it move on.

@shadowhunter0 right on. I may venture toward some games as well but I tend to like hard copies. It will be interesting to see how this offer develops.

nice seeing all the xbox fanboys showing up..   personally, i'd rather have the disk... and no, i dont re-sell my games.. i keep them.. forever... and only 2 of those titles mentioned are ones i have any interest in... Assassin's Creed 3 for sure, and possibly Need for Speed, tho i doubt it will be as good as the first Most Wanted on PS2..

Too bad the "Sony Entertainment Network" is garbage and PS3 hardware makes me change channels on my router to get download speeds that are barely good enough to download games within a day.

@catsimboy what I never had to do that and everything I've download takes under an hour even full disc base games

in fact I don't even believe you own a ps3

Like hell I don't, I actually had to buy a Slim PS3 to replace my old Fat PS3 because the Fat PS3 would only get %60 wireless strength when everything else in the room uses wireless just fine.

@catsimboy the wifi on the ps3 does suck that is why everyone say to do wired if you can which wasn't all the hard for me since the house I live in has Ethernet cables running through the walls

I am glad they are getting this out of the way!  I am more than likely moving back to Sony from Microsoft next gen ... hopefully, Sony will realize how flawed this idea is (right now) given the current state of ISPs, and that many people (myself included) prefer physical discs, and then when they launch their next system, it will still have both digital capabilities as well as physical.

Seems as though Sony is pushing towards Digital only console more then the other guys..  Awesome they are using the user base this gen as lab rats.. Best part is as a thank you for going digital they offer DL speeds slower then hell.. oh and after waiting forever for the DL you have to wait for it to install as well...

@shadowhunter0 So you sit there for an hour or so, sometimes an hour plus depending on how many updates the multiplayer had....  It should not be forced it should be a choice.

and plus you know Sony will be charging full on retail price for a Digital copy because they have already.. its all BS..

@hajjjustin @Derrick79 @shadowhunter0 I don't sit there. I switch over to play something on my 360 or watch tv or get on my laptop in the mean time. These comments are hilarious. So many misconceptions in this thread.

shadowhunter0

@Derrick79 lol no there are games on the ps3 that you can play while it is downloading that wont stop it plus I do other stuff like play on my vita or pc do work around the house or simply have it download while I'm away plus with ps+ the games will automatically download and install the patch for me while I'm away
