Been a while since that terrific time playing Revan in KOTOR. Can't wait to pick this game up! I'll play Sith for sure!
BioWare's sci-fi MMORPG should launch between July and December, says EA Games president; EA CFO says there's an "outside" chance for further delay.
Today, EA Games president Frank Gibeau teased the debut of Star Wars: The Old Republic. The executive called the sci-fi massively multiplayer online role-playing game's launch the "biggest event of the year," and EA's earnings report said the game is "scheduled to launch in the second half of calendar 2011."
While Gibeau seemed confident, some of his fellow executives were less so. "Although we fully anticipate launching Star Wars: The Old Republic [between July and December], the low end of our guidance range assumes the outside possibility of a January [quarter] launch," said CFO Eric Brown. (Emphasis added.) Out of caution, EA's fiscal year 2012 release calendar doesn't list the game at all.
In his comments, Gibeau wouldn't reveal the MMORPG's exact launch date. He said the reason for that was twofold. First, EA doesn't want to "tip off the competition," a thinly veiled reference to Blizzard Entertainment, which develops and publishes World of Warcraft. Second, he said that developer BioWare Austin wanted more data from the game's beta, which EA expects will have 1 million participants, since 1.5 million people have already signed up. EA has said once released, The Old Republic only needs 500,000 subscribers to turn a profit, although analysts are predicting it should have at least 1 million subscribers out of the gate.
The only problem i have with this game is, why do the sith look like machines? Their armor is so not even close to anything Star Wars like. Jedi and Dark Jedi wear robes, not heavy metal armor. And even if they did, its not like it would protect them, a light saber would cut through it the same as if it were cloth. So mite as well where the cloth so your more nimble and dexterous on your feet.
@XtremeDude09 : I was moved on, you obviously aren't. I still stand by what I said and by what I was told, repeatedly. None of it has been proven wrong, your links don't prove anything for certain. No one knows for certain either way. Wait for the game to come out then we'll know. It's not worth all your attention and I could really care less to be honest. End of subject.
@DarthVeng_basic Gotcha http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=316997 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdKw1z_cQUA&feature=player_detailpage#t=139s @2:19 Now admit you were wrong and move on?
@KitexGamer : What exactly would I get out of lying about this subject? That's nonsense and utterly ridiculous to even say. I was told by many people what I was told, end of subject. Believe what you want. I am not going to search through months old posts just to post a link and make you sleep better at night, not worth my time nor do I care so much about it. Move on and don't worry about it. We'll find out when the game comes out.
@DarthVeng_basic Bioware loves their stories, they put hours and hours into each class' story so on that train of thought it would be counter intuitive for BW to limit you to one side of the faction per account. In fact such a move would make players turn away from this game because such a move would be an obvious money making scam. "Sorry but if you want to play both sides you need to make two paid accounts" I frequent the forums as well and I have not seen anything close to what you say. What you may be referring to was the discussion about if you could or could not play on different sides within the same server for balancing issues but that has not been confirmed either. Most likely Bioware will let you play whatever side you want regardless of server though because they want people to experience the stories they have written. I am with XtremeDude09 on this, I think you are making things up or are seriously mistaken. If you would like to prove your point then give up a link to the forums or the interview where you heard this. Preferrably a link where an actual BW representative has stated this and not some forumite who is simply kicking up dust.
@voldalin All classes can DPS, even those that can tank. The trailers all show the tank classes DPSing, because it makes the best trailers. @zeebenzene Some people have over 20,000... @DarthVeng_basic Link it then, if its true...
i saw some video about the tank class. it didn't look like a tank at all, just some guy with a light saber doing flips through the air and swatting at npc's with it. just didn't seem right.
@XtremeDude09 dang dude. over 3000 posts? that's dedication. I'm a forumite too but I don't have near that many posts on any of the forums I go to.
@XtremeDude09 : I'm NOT lying. No point in lying. Think what you will, but that is not what I have been told, many times. I have been referred to the Bioware statement on the issue saying the same exact thing I said. We'll find out the "truth" soon enough so don't worry about it and stop calling people liars.
@DarthVeng_basic I am forum member myself. I check it every day, and I have over 3000 posts. I can absolutely guarantee you are incorrect, because if they had said that, I would have heard about. In fact, all the discussions are about not having characters on opposite factions on the same server (they have not said either way)! You CAN have characters on opposite factions under the same account. So will you please stop lying.
Still hoping it comes to OnLive so fans of the console prequels can play it without upgrading their PCs.
The one thing I *am* worried about with TOR is moving around in-game. WoW is the most awesome game I have ever played for ease of movement within the world. I hate the old D2 model of just pressing the mouse button and going there, and I will *not* use ASDF or cursor keys. In WoW, I have my right mouse button bound to rotate camera, so I can press and hold it and rotate 360 degrees, plus I can press and hold both buttons and run, correcting my course and look as I go. This works great for short runs and close-in manuvering. For longer runs, I have the Run toggle bound to my 'z' key, so I can just press 'z' once and run as long as I want, using my right mouse button to correct direction as needed. This is the most powerful *and* flexible moving system I have ever found in *any* game, and I cannot imagine settling for less flexibility in another game. I am anxiously awaiting the release of ToR, but if it makes moving around a pain like several other games have tried, it will quickly be deleted from my computer like they were. Another thing I love about WoW's key system is it lets me assign "Flip Camera" to my Mouse Button 4, on which my thumb rests. This gives me an instant "rear-view mirror", and has saved my life countless times on PvP servers.
First, I don't care if we have to wait till Mother's Day 2012, I want the game to be finished and everything working right, including (especially) networking. I'd much rather have an extra six months or so than the nightmare launch I have seen for so many other MMOs. Second, re ToR looking "cartoony", zillions of people, incl. me, said the same thing about WoW, and that didn't keep it from amassing over 12 million paid subscribers, not to mention being a kicka$$ game. Lastly, as far as everyone being a Jedi at launch, I plan to make a Bounty Hunter first. When I am ready to make a Jedi, I am perfectly willing to go Sith if it helps the balance. Also, the details about class roles released last week indicates that they are trying to plan in advance for class imbalance, since there are now several classes that can tank or heal, instead of just one for each role. Thus, even if your group was all Jedi, you would still be able to fill all three roles, so I'm not worried about this.
Forum thread link? Normally you could have characters from different factions but not on the same server :
@XtremeDude09 : Not nonsense, and they decided to change it. It's been confirmed over at the Bioware forums many times. I personally have posted against it on the Bioware forums, but all everyone says is what I have just stated. Your either on Empire, or Republic, under one account. You cannot have characters on both sides. I am not happy about it either. I didn't make the rule.
@DarthVeng_basic Thats nonsense. It was confirmed years ago and it still holds today that you can have up to eight characters on the republic and/or empire. You are either spreading lies, or you have been deceived by one yourself.
@Fayt1986 : Yes, what I said is true. You have to choose either Republic or Empire and cannot have characters on both sides on one account. I am not happy about it either. Their reasoning is that it interferes with the story lines and game atmosphere over all. In my opinion it's idiotic and just another way to milk people for more money. .
Quality takes time. I have been chomping at the bit for this game since it was announced but I know that rushing a game can kill a game. I don't want a "meh" game that I play for a month and move on like other MMO's. I want a world I can immerse myself in. I am willing to wait for that.
I hate to say it but this looks...bad. I'm a huge SW fan but I was really hoping for something that looked a little more MMORPG, since that's what it IS. The combat looks more like a fighting game/action-RPG style hybrid. And the character models look like they're out of the anime cartoon series (which I hate). Would love for this to be a huge success but it's not going to win on the merrits of the franchise name alone. I've fallen for that trap with SW products before and I won't do it again. For now, I'll just stick with WoW unless there's something truly unique and awesome about ToR.
I had a feeling when they announced the whole saga on Blu-Ray in September that it meant not to even consider September for The Old Republic anymore, which was the original month. Oh well, it will still be awesome, and more than worth the wait.
While I am really looking forward to The Old Republic's release, I'm worried about the chance there might be a massive imbalance in the roles people will play. It's every persons fantasy to be a Jedi Knight at some point in their lives, so everyone will choose to be a Jedi or a Sith and no one will be a Bounty Hunter or a Trooper or any of the non-force/lightsaber roles. I mean, choking a guy with your bare hands from a distance is so much cooler than shooting him. Does that make me sound like a psycho? Maybe. The point is I hope people go for alternate rolls to mix the game up a bit.
It would be nice to see an mmo that was ready at launch, and didnt need a ton of work after launch a la star trek online. Im not a huge fan of mmos but this one does sound kinda fun, so Ill give it a bash for the free month that comes with the game.
@DarthVeng_basic wait if i make a good sided character i cant make a diffrent one on the bad side on one account?. if so thats insane forcing you to have two accounts or starting again on the bad/good side.
All I know is that they'd better release the game before Skyrim comes out in November, when their player pool is cut in half.
Bioware should take all the time they need. Get this thing polished and ready for a stable launch. I would like to see a launch like Rift had, instead of a launch like every other MMO.
Meh. The more I see the less interested I am. I don't like the cartoony character models and GI Joe on steroids look. I much preferred the original KOTOR and KOTOR II look. I don't like not being able to have characters on both sides on one account. I am wondering what ways they will use to milk more money out of people in this game. I am sure this will be another "DLC on day One" game, or store exclusive weapons garbage, and I am SICK of that.
I got Rift to hold me over a few months.. after that i guess its back to EvE.. Man, every MMO since AION has been there to hold me till this game releases, but it jus seems like its always being pushed back.. I for one am still excited but i know a lot of people on the MMO forums i frequent (and friends irl) have lost interest in this game.
@NemesisStar yeah that's what i was saying with my last post bioware is know for quality so it may be able to compete. Everyone wants a new mmorpg but they want it to compete with wow, as it is right now which took almost 5 years to work out as many bugs as they have it was a horrible game by today's standards when it first came out maybe if we give them time bioware can do it out the gate
Well.. 5 yeas development... maybe they'll really change the history of MMORPG by realeasing an on line game that's not a "beta you pay to play with", or "an ongoing improvement" but a bug free, complete, playable and enjoyable great game !
I really hope SWTOR is released this year...if they say 2012 release I'll cry :( LOL I signed up to beta like 2 years ago in 2009...so i hope it be the case of beta launch (6 months testing) and release for christmas or something.....
what january 2012.... i was thinking it was coming out in a few months... and that was a few months ago i think i might as well play WoW for a bit more then, and cancel it once this comes out or when the beta starts
I almost broke furniture at home yesterday, scrambling for my keyboard and practically kicking-on my PC, to register as a Beta tester, after receiving the heads-up from EA's website.... I have a feeling that the deferral of Mass Effect 3's launch from the end of 2011 to the early 2012, may indeed be a consequence of Old republic's "sooner than we think" deployment... at least, that's what I think anyway. I've not been involved in the MMO genre as yet. But I'm pretty sure Old Republic will contain all of the elements required to sucker an old-school geek like me into the fight. Personally, I'm looking forward to it. A lot.
This won't kill WOW even though it's by Bioware and has EA's big bucks behind it. So they better get used to that idea of being 2nd place and not have over the top ideas and crazy expectations of how well they will do in the money making department as the current MMORPG subscription model is on the way out as LOTRO proved and Guild Wars 2 hopes to remulate it's initial success with GW 1 with. It will however definitely kill the other MMORPGS out there currently on life support waiting to be put out of there misery like DC Universe Online, AOC etc. etc. I'll definitely give it a try for a month.
i'd better wait than see the flawed product. Rift "has set a new standard for MMOs" as stated by Gamespot and I'd rather Bioware polishes the product.
