New "Rising" version of MMO to be available without subscription fee next month with no level cap or content restrictions for new players.
En Masse Entertainment's massively multiplayer online role-playing game Tera is going free-to-play next month when it re-launches at Tera: Rising. The new version of the game will not require a subscription fee and new players will not face any content restrictions or a level cap.
Though Tera: Rising will be available to play for free, players can use real-world money to purchase various items on an a la carte basis from the in-game marketplace.
Past and current Tera subscribers will be awarded permanent "founder" status, which carries numerous exclusive privileges. Those who pay $15 per month for "Elite" status will be granted extra dungeon rewards, 10 bonus quests per day, a daily delivery of items and boosts, an elite mount, in-game store discounts, and waived brokerage registration taxes.

To coincide with the free-to-play business model switch for Tera, new in-game content will be made available. This includes a wave-based dungeon called the Crucible of Flame and a PvP battleground map called Champions' Skyring that "introduces a new way for players to test their skills against each other."
Tera is the latest MMO to drop its subscription fee, following Lord of the Rings Online, Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures, EverQuest II, Aion, and Star Wars: The Old Republic. Bethesda has not said if its upcoming MMO The Elder Scrolls Online will carry a subscription fee, though consultant Nicholas Lovell believes the game will launch with a subscription before going free-to-play.

I'm almost dumbfounded, a former p2p mmo going f2p with almost no restrictions? Damn, I'm sold! I respect a company that doesn't make you a second-rate citizen in it's world. Regardless, I'm still willing to shell out for a game like Elder Scrolls Online when it comes out :D
1 Like Ok lets put it this way EnMass tought that they can be smarter than the koreans and try and succeed with pay to play model . but when they saw that after the koreans made it f2p and made double the profit and a 2x increase of the game population they felt stupid and decided to change to f2p.
I still can't believe people use idiotic sentences like '' Why play Tera when there is Guild Wars 2!''. It's like saying ''Why eat apple when there is banana!''. For freaking sake, eat both of them - or in this case, play both of them. I love Guild Wars 2, but I'm gonna play Tera like hell as well. And Blade & Soul when it arrives too. :)
It's not a bad game, just not worth a subscription fee. This should have been implemented from the start - there is not enough content to justify a monthly fee.
I was waiting forward for this game to go F2P.

@Tripwolf I can understand that as well. My problem with subscriptions is that I feel an obligation to play or I feel as if I'm wasting my money. I feel bad for not playing a certain amount during a month. Now, most people don't have that problem (look at WoW), but that's just how it is for me.
@Tripwolf I play ST:O which went F2P. I honestly don't feel pressured into buying anything with real cash and the community for the most part has been helpful. Most of those "hateful" players get weeded in the first few months and all communities have them. I feel more pressured into buying items from games that are designed to be F2P moba-ish titles (world of tanks, planetside 2, and realm of the mad god come to mind)
Excellent, I actually really wanted to give this one a go a few months ago, but figured I'd hold off just in case the fee was dropped. Can definitely see myself picking it up in the next several months.
This MMO was alot of fun, I enjoyed the PvP, but my friends all quit on me >.< Might go try this if i can stand the huge download again haha. Im kind of skeptical on the whole "Bonus quest" deal though. Are you limited to only doing afew quests per day?
@ceribro Guild Wars 2 actually has less intense combat than Tera, actually. I found myself bored in GW2 fighting mobs.
@ceribro then why you bother?? go play GW2, maybe you dont realize so i tell you: some ppl's try GW2 and are not interrested, there is even another group of ppl's who simply dont play only ONE game :p (like me)

Already started "unlimited trial" (till the conversion to F2P) and i'm really enyojed this game, especially combat---at least something different comparing other MMO's "asexual" combat like in WoW or GW2 :p
I played Tera for awhile when it first came out. Definitely check it out if you're into MMOs. It's true the look and feel is fairly....MMOish but the combat is unrivaled and can hopefully set a precedent for future MMO combat. No more point and click, but real time, fast paced, dodge inducing combat. Good stuff.
LOL at all the mmorpgs that are being released only to go free-to-play not long after. Face it, if it isn't warcraft, don't even bother charging in the first place.
is this game even worth caring about? i mean, with the exception with world of warcraft, most mmorpgs are utter crap, imo.
@KimCheeWarriorX what expectations blizzard is just filling up content for ppl to keep playing so they can make more money to support a new leading project that they hope can be successful like wow. because they realized that the game style is not appealing to players any more and they mostly turn to action based mmo and improved combat and game mechanics . they might think about making a revamped wow that support such action based mechanics which will probably make a totally different or new game , but other than the game is in its last years and blizz know it thats why they are making projects like Titans , etc..

5 Like MMORPG genre is TERA-BLE. It has the lowest standard and quality of any genre out there.
He reminds me of my friend. He tried browser based mmo and then talks trash about all mmo genre like he played everything.

I played it for a while and enjoyed the combat. Most of the races and classes were pretty fun to play but the lack of variety in questing eventually made it feel like a grind. The content made for pedophiles didn't help either.
@Wango_Tango They censored Eilin's, and I, having just started last week, have already hit 5 scripted timer fights, and got matched for a dungeon in 3 minutes at level 20. It's way better than it used to be, from what I hear. Also, BG's and GVGVGVGVGVGVGVG
1 Like Totally gonna play this. I've heard great things about it basically being dungeon crawler Bayonetta with skill trees and loot.
Lasted longer than I expected. And no, I haven't even played it, I just know the subscription based model is basically dead unless your game completely rewrites all the rules to MMOs as we know it.
What I read was 'Tera planning to GET REAL', go figure, I guess most people can't stay under delusions of impunity to the laws of economics forever...
I'm kind of surprised it took this long to go FTP, this game was always a little dull.
This was a smart move on their part though, the subscription model just isn't worth it anymore for any game
@northArrow After F2P comes, the dull will get washed out in a flood of blood. Turf war PVP is going to explode...in a terrible awesome way.
