'Thief' announced for next-gen platforms in 2014

Eidos Montreal confirms new game coming to PC and next-generation platforms in 2014.

Update:

Game Informer has confirmed "Thief" as the cover of its April issue. "Series hero Garrett returns to the Gothic, industrial metropolis known simply as the City to steal any and everything that will make him richer. Unfortunately, the City is broiling with social tension as it is ravaged by a plague and lorded over by a political tyrant known as the Baron. In order to survive his adventures, Garrett will have to pay attention to his environment and make use of the many possible paths through each of the game's levels."

The magazine also confirmed the title would be launching for the PS4, PC, and "other next-gen platforms" in 2014.

Original story:

Screenshots of a next-generation Thief 4 have leaked online.

The game is expected to be officially unveiled imminently, although user GamesManiac on Russian social network VK.com seems to have unearthed the images early.

The 16 screenshots appear to be scans from a magazine, with GamesManiac claiming Thief 4 will be released in 2014 for the PC and next-generation consoles.

Four of the images are from a first-person perspective. Lock-picking is also shown, along with various other sneaky activities in a world of cobbled streets and murky lighting.

The critically acclaimed Thief series has not been seen since 2004's Thief: Deadly Shadows, though Thief 4 has been confirmed to be in the works at Eidos Montreal since 2009.

All previous games in the series have cast the player as Garrett, a master thief in a steampunk and supernatural world.

For anyone who hasn't played some of the earlier Thief's before you guys should probably go do that, they're some of the best stealth games out there.

Thief 4, good news.

Bad news, most games get mainstreamed nowadays, and be aware of hypes. as much as i want to be exited by this new Thief wish was a childhood game for me, i can´t. What can i say, my faith is this industry is almost running out.

I've managed to find more pieces of info, which may very well indicate that the direction of Thief 4 (or rebooted Thief) will be unpleasant to many of the fans (including me) of Thief 1 & 2.

Taken from the URL posted below is this quote: "Thief 4 runs on Unreal Engine, features some sort of online functionality and will bring "more than just stealth". Eidos Montreal is taking the same no-holds-barred approach to choice it took with Human Revolution, but is after "a different play style.

What's meant by "more than just stealth," "online functionality," or "a different play style?" If that quote (from Eidos Montreal boss Stephane D'Astous) doesn't worry you, then I don't know what will.

Hmmm...I  somehow have a feeling that the reason why the lead devs of Thief 4 left the team. It was because they knew that Eidos was going to greatly dumb down the entire game, removing many aspects that made the first two Thief games great. In case anyone needs to be reminded of that or know what I'm basing my opinion on, here's the link to an older Thief 4 news article:

the game title is not appropriate. thief is a form of taking not your own for the purpose of gaining without violence; while robbery is a form of taking not your own for the purpose of gaining with violence. and since the protagonist looks like a member of assassin brotherhood, it assumes that this games contains violence, like murder and homecide..

as conclusion, the title of this  game should be "robbery with homecide"

@zero_reiko except don't judge a book by it's cover, also Garrett has been sporting that garb long before the Dark Brother Hood was even though of and here's some trivia: Emil Pagliarulo the creator of the Dark Brotherhood first started in the industry when he helped LGS develop Thief 2 which then inspired him to work on the TBH quest line in Oblivion.

Also, while you can kill in Thief you can also perform the challenging task of playing throughout the game without killing anyone like I did in Expert when I completed the game for my first time earlier this year (though I started last year, twas a long process).

OH SHIT.  Anybody else get chills when they saw this headline?  I absolutely loved the Thief games back in the day, I really hope they do the new one well.  This series is what made me fall in love with stealth games.  Actually I can't remember if I played Thief or MGS first, but I'm a stealth fan because of those games.

Thief was the first game to introduce the stealth mechanism of hiding in the dark if I'm not mistaken.

@snakefantasy10 In a way, it's already in. See "Focus" mode.

@analyser @snakefantasy10 You haven't played the thief games? Well, Garret has a mechanical eye which enables him to see through some mechanical telepathic camera he throws around corners, not through walls though, that would be the first and totally ruin the atmosphere and what Thief stands for.  A "normal" person with useful tools to play around with in a not so normal steam punk environment.

heck yeah! I loved Thief 1 and 2; Deadly Shadows was good too. I hope they put plenty of scary missions and areas into this! I loved shalebridge cradle's atmosphere and the old Thief places like the hammer cathedral! it'll be nice to see Thief on next gen though anyways!

When I read the description for Thief, I thought to myself that it sure sounds a lot like the Dishonored. Not that that is a bad thing.

@SavoyPrime Only Thief is the reason Dishonored even exists.

@TohouAsura @SavoyPrime You can see Danny play the original 1998 Thief on Random Encounter but yeah Thief is a rather old series just getting hit with the Relaunch stick.

Man I'm glad they're doing this because I completely missed out on Thief. I wanted to get it back in 2005 on the Xbox but didn't for some stupid reason.

Step aside Dishonored, let the real pros show you how it's done.

Garrett is back, baby.

Thank Dishonored. I think if it wasn't for it, there wouldn't be enough pressure on the Thief developers..

People tend to ignore that, but it is highly unlikely that Thief developers played Dishonored and said: "DAMN, THIS IS OUR GAME! Lets get Thief 4 rolling!"

I see Dishonored as the needed catalyst to push the release of Thief 4.

@GunEye You do realize Thief 4 was announced and began development back in 2009. Eidos Interactive went through restructuring back in 2007 and was relocated to Montreal, where they chose to revive Deus Ex and Thief. There is a reason why it's taking Thief a long time, Eidos Montreal is a fairly small team and tend to focus more on one project at a time. Deus Ex Human Revolution was announced back in 2007 and was in development for around 4 years, which is around the same amount Theif 4 will spend in development. So to say Dishonored has anything to do with pressure on the team to realse the game is completly false. Us Thief fans who have been waiting since 2009 already knew it was coming.

FYI Dishonored creative game director Harvey Smith used to work with Looking Glass and Ion Storm before they closed doors and Deus Ex designer Ricardo Bare was its Lead Designer.

@ NeonNinja

There were plagues all the time.  It is not like its an uncommon setting.

NeonNinja
NeonNinja

I understand that Dishonored is inspired heavily by Thief, I really do.  But they couldn't do something beyond trying to survive a plague ridden city and to stop a political figure?

I mean, I get it and all, but you figure they would have a gone a completely different direction beyond "yeah, so there's this bad guy you gotta sneak to, BUT there's a plague so it's kinda in the way of you sneaking to him, you know?" since Dishonored JUST released with that SAME premise.

Yes, Thief came first, again, I get it.  But with it being out of the spotlight for so long, you would again, figure that they would go a different route in terms of set up than Dishonored.  For all I know it could be a totally different game once the narrative and gameplay opens up.  But I would have liked to have heard something else regarding the setting.

Beyond that, bring it on! I'm ready for this game!

@NeonNinja It all comes to which began development first, which was Thief 4. Who's to say Eidos Montreal didn't come up with the theme first.
