Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD first step in series return

Robomodo CEO Josh Tsui says downloadable update's success the first step in reviving classic skateboarding franchise.

The sales success of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD may make the Hawk into a phoenix. Robomodo CEO Josh Tsui spoke with Gamasutra about how the downloadable title is the first step in the dormant skateboarding franchise's rise from the ashes.

The timed Xbox Live Arcade exclusive sold 120,000 copies in its first week of availability, Robomodo told Gamasutra, and is set to go live on PlayStation network and PC later this year. Tsui said the smaller scale of the project, which met a lukewarm critical reception, made it an easier pitch to a still-hesitant Activision. Robomodo was the primary developer behind both 2009's Tony Hawk Ride and 2010's Tony Hawk Shred, peripheral-based entries in the franchise which were found to be lacking by many critics.

The return to the franchise's roots was bound to disappoint some whether they wanted more changes or fewer, Tsui said, but the smaller-scale downloadable update was meant to show the franchise had comeback potential. "The prospect of a fuller game is definitely on the table -- it's just a matter of when and how," he said.

"We were given the right amount [of resources] based on the scope of [Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD], but obviously we would always want more to go bigger," Tsui said. "I don't think hits these days look the same as they did back in 1999 or 2000, so it would be great to see the Tony Hawk franchise do interesting things on a variety of platforms."

I didn't bother to get this game because they didn't add an offline multi-player mode.

I can take a step back in the gameplay mechanics from the later games...accept i want revert in ALL levels, but no split-screen is unacceptable.

In addition, these skateboarding games need to QUIT LEAVING OUT FLATLAND TRICKS.

Vert skating blows, street skating is god. If you don't beleive me watch a rodney mullen skate video and prepare to crap your pants.

Pfft. I played the Tony Hawk games like they were crack everysingle time one came out... Until .skate came along.

After that Tony Hawk just seemed gimicky, and unrealistic. In reality they began to lose their flair with the over-the-top antics of THUG2. Unless Tony Hawk can come up with something similiar or better than .skate's analog stick system, I for one will not be playing them ever again. It just doesn't feel right.

This is great, Tony Hawks was a great franchise that unfortunately just got way too technical in Proving Ground, even though it was a great game... and when they tried to simplify it, they went the wrong way about it it. THPSHD was the right way about it. I am hoping soon they give us something more along the lines of Underground, while not being too technical. (you have to admit, there were times in Proving Ground where there were just too many things you had to do with a controller in too short of an amount of time.

Regardless of what many have said about "stripped down gameplay", I've enjoyed the hell out of this game.  Nostalgia set aside, I forgot how unhealthily good I was at this game.  Proud? Yes.  Sad?  Kind of...

Before taking a step forward in the right direction could you take 10 steps back? Before everything went to far in the wrong direction (the first of those 10 steps back would be burning every single one of those crappy skateboard controllers)

I knew this game was worth skipping as soon as I read it only has 7 levels. Oh, but it's in HD. That's the story of this gen, isn't it? Ogle the shiny graphics, never mind the stripped-down gameplay.

I want to see more HD remakes of the older games. Build the series back up to where it was, when it was at it's peak. But don't rush it. Good games take time to make.

Oh look, they have a ten year old child skateboarding! Oh, Tony Hawk is upping the ante, now.

@samantha_sneez That "ten year old child skateboarding" happens to be Rodney Mullen, a skater that has been in the series since the second game. Oh, and he's 45.

It's kinda like a comedians greatest hits CD.....they have those ya know, George Carlin had 2 that I know of but anyways in comedy who want's a bunch of bits from a comedians whole run on stage? it's not as good because after one bit you know what to expect and it never comes just the next thing......

This game is the same way, a whole lot of nostalgia with not a lot else, 7 levels and nothing to really keep you playing I call that weak no matter what the intention was.

What they should have done was do a whole new game in the way of THPS2, 8 levels, 12 pro skaters a skater editor nothing too fancy and a park editor with all the bells and whistles, again the editor doesn't have to be that complex just allow folks to create something that sustains the game.....that's what would keep the game going, players building parks and trading them with friends and others.....

Pass on this... leave it to Activision to milk it, theres a add on for this game coming out later. Why not just wait till they release it all together for an even cheaper price.

They're on the right track I think, sometimes all you need to do is simply go back to your roots.

@GunBladeHero I agree but, something felt wrong when playing it. Maybe THPSU spoiled me with how easy thing were, the soundtrack could also use some work. lol

Unless they reach the quality of the first 5 TH games, I'll never buy any of his games. It seems that TH is desperately trying to relive his glory days but his efforts are folly. Even this new downloadable game is a disappointment. Jeez, take 2 years to make a game if you have to. Doesn't need to be a yearly thing like before.

The series doesn't need to return.  2,4, and 5 were great, but the rest were mediocre to awful.  Skate's taken it's place.

In fact, the only good thing to come of a TH return would be for EA to green light another Skate game.

What has our future gen become? they rely on PS2 HD remakes for sales, and removed PS2 B/C.

@servb0ts THPS 1-4 were all on the PS1. So technically speaking you could still play it on your PS3...

Yeah, but the PS1 ports of 3 & 4 weren't that great. When I recently bought a used PS1 to play old games, I bought 3 to go with the first two i have. It doesnt seem nearly as complete as the full PS2 version. Still a great game, though.
