Nintendo... Why are you wasting marketing and shipping money on this when you could've made the Wii U with much better specs in it.......
Supposed internal release schedule from "major retailer" suggests Nintendo will release redesigned, more compact console early next month.
A Wii redesign could be on store shelves as early as next month, if one report proves accurate. NintendoWorldReport has obtained a supposed internal release schedule from an unnamed "major retailer" that reveals a "Wii Mini" console will arrive December 7. No price was listed.
The bundle will come with a new, more "compact" Wii system, as well as a sensor bar, nunchuck, and Wii Remote Plus.
If the report is true, it would mark the second Wii redesign, following last year's Europe-only "Wii Family Edition" bundle. This console did not feature GameCube controller ports.
A Nintendo representative declined to comment.
Last week, Nintendo director of product marketing Bill Trinen said the Wii remains a viable platform because of its large install base. He also suggested Nintendo could spur hardware sales by making the system available "at the right price."
"I think there's also the potential for a lot of people who still haven't purchased Wii, believe it or not, who might be interested at the right price," Trinen said at the time. "So we'll probably be looking at it more from that standpoint."
Seems logical naming it wii mini.. Coz if they combined it.. Wii + mini = wiini lmao others might perceive it differently & prolly bann its release
i now understand why companies do the shrinking thing with consoles that are redundant to the home!! still pointless buy a vita
even though i have a wiiu maybe ill get one if the price is 50 bucks to 60 bucks , just to have the club nintendo coins lol
Seems kind of pointless since WiiU can play Wii games and the Wii itself is pretty compact already. It's not like the PS2 > PS2 slim leap.
well, the wii is almost tied for the 2nd best selling console ever....so of course they plan to keep selling them in some form...the ps2 barely died this year!
Sounds like classic Nintendo from back in the 90's. If memory serves me right, and correct me if I am wrong, they did a redesign in the fall/winter of 93 with the top loading nes, which only had 3 maybe 4 games released the following year in 94 the final game being Warios Woods, and they also did a redesign of the Super Nes about a year or 2 before they discontinued that, the final game being Kirby's Dream Land 3.
I believe the reasoning was to simply get some final sales for those systems for people who did not wish to jump into the next gen of systems or for those who simply did not have the funds to do so.
It will be interesting to see if a "mini Wii" does in fact release and what the price point will be, if the price is right say....$70-$80 I might be inclined to purchase one.
@sl83r 50$/60$ I definitely would. 70/80? It would be an impulse buy if I had a little extra scratch on me, maybe.
Please let this be fake. Nintendo would gain nothing from this. Most likely it wouldn't be reverse-compatible, and the only reason I would need a Wii is to play Gamecube games.
A Wii Mini? Nintendo has stated that they are not going to be making any new first party games for the Wii. If Nintendo themselves continue to create new games for the Wii then, a second revision of the console could work out. Third parties did not do very well with sales on the original Wii. Nintendo sold lots of first party games so if Nintendo does not continue to support the Wii. Don't bother with this redesign.
Best Nintendo could hope for is selling a Wii Console with that standard hook ups, and a Wii Remote without the Nunchuk. and no pack in game. for $50.00. It is 2012 The Wii U has launched it can play Wii games. So the original Wii shouldn't sell any more that 3-4 million more units. Clear out remaining Wii stock and Nintendo could create the Lime Green Wii Console and matching Wii-mote controller. Sell it for $50 dollars and make a few more sales. But everyone who has a Wii console by now has one.
If this ends up being true, I bet they take the backwards compatibility with GC away. Also, who are they trying to fool? The WiiU plays Wii games so what's the point?
A revamped Wii with no Gamecube controller compatibility? I don't know about you guys, but playing Super Smash Bros. Brawl or other fast paced button mashing games on the wiimote isn't exactly comfortable. Oh well, not like we're being forced to buy their products, right? Then again, I bet peer pressure might've been responsible for some Wii sales. So therefore, no one ever forces you to buy anything. We just need stronger willpower to resist peer pressure to NOT feel like we need to buy stuff we'll never use or need.
"Wii Family Edition" link is broken.
A shame Nintendo is announced they are no longer making any 1st party games for the Wii.
Since the writer of the article is asking us instead of researching, I'm calling bullshit. If the Wii got any smaller it would only be able to play Gamecube discs. Plus, the way the device is fabricated now, N makes a substantial amount of money off of each console purchase.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
I am not at all surprised, and neither would I be surprised to see that little obsolete thing sell shamefully well...Meanwhile the Wii U gets scooped up, price tag notwithstanding...
Doesn't the Wii U and the PC (with Dolphin) play those games? Seem the money could be better spent on more games and just using Dolphin.
Nintendo is doing a poor job marketing the Wii U in the US (and odds are in other parts of the world). I can see a number of casual gamers being confused and not realizing the difference between the Wii, Wii Mini, and Wii U.
Heck I bet a few might think the Wii U is just a new controller for the Wii.
I'd rather pay for two/three new games on a modern platform that are actually, you know, worthwhile and fun. As opposed to gimmicky and rubbish.
@andrew_ribbons that ain't even the issue lol. fact is wii only has10-20 good games and ppl already have em. And the Wii is already small what would be the point and making it with the wii u out. I call BS because its a pointless waste of money and resources. Also every console at this point has a gimmicky controller. It all depends on if said controller is used to its full potential and is very intuitive though I admit wiimote+ is still not accurate enough
What good will Wii mini do now when Wii U is out? Nice timing Nintendo :P, I think you finally lost it.
