XCOM: Enemy Unknown landing Oct. 9

Firaxis' new action-strategy game hitting US this October, with international release slated for October 12; preorder bonuses, special edition revealed.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown will become known to gamers this October. This morning, publisher 2K Games announced that the Firaxis-developed action-strategy game will hit the US on October 9, 2012, with an international release following on October 12. The game is due out for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

On top of announcing a release date for XCOM: Enemy Unknown, 2K Games revealed that those who preorder the game will score the Elite Soldier Pack. This bonus packs in various visual character customization options including a classic XCOM soldier based on the original 1993 game's presentation style, complete with a blond, flattop hairstyle.

2K Games did not say if the Elite Soldier Pack will be made available to those who do not preorder XCOM: Enemy Unknown, and as of press time, the publisher had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment.

The publisher also brought news today of a special edition of XCOM: Enemy Unknown. Available at launch for $60, the premium bundle will contain a copy of the game, as well as an art book, a foldout poster of the XCOM headquarters, an XCOM insignia patch, and a collection of digital assets like desktop wallpaper and the game's soundtrack.

A turn-based mode (even if it was like VATS or something) would be nice, but I'll give it a fair chance regardless...  Firaxis is at the helm.

I hope this game will be good as its predecessor !!

People talk about the graphics and say "ha its look old and creapy" but the graphics is not the more important in a game, its the gameplay mechanics

Man, I hope this one turns out to be another dark horse in Firaxis's stable. I still remember Alpha Centauri that came out of nowhere and completely rejuvenated TBS games for me.

?I never played the original XCOM and until about a month ago, I'd never heard of it before. Was XCOM that good?

@TruthTellers Best turn-based game I've ever played. The relief you felt when all your squad returned safely to base; the agony when one of them was down, or worse, mind controlled (gulp!)... was indescribable. Oh, the memories.

The original X-Com will always have a special place in my heart.  I have so many fond memories of the game, from picking it up from an Office Depot bargain bin on a rainy autumn morning to spending countless hours playing through it, time and again, all through my Christmas break, sitting bundled in a fuzzy blanket in front of the computer, gleefully blasting Sectoids and Snakemen while my parents listened to Christmas music in the other room.  And I was so looking forward to this updated version.  But this preorder bonus bullsh*t irritates the hell out of me.  Now I'm kinda soured on the whole thing.

I may, MAY be more excited for this than any other game this year. I spent the better part of 1996 trudging through the Playstation version. Loading and framerate issues aside, one of  best gaming experiences I've ever had.

Best. Game. Ever! At least the original was... HIgh optimism for the title, especially since Firaxis is doing it. Just worried about trying to make it XBOX/PS compatable will "dumb-down" the PC version.
