Chris Watters takes one last stab at Rage and finds that the PC isn't always better than the console.
I'm really not sure why gamespot still gives technical issues on PC reviews so much weight. They REALLY should consider that 98% of technical issues in major PC titles really do get fixed quickly
I'm wary after all the shaky reviews but I figure this game is worth owning at 10 dollars on a Steam flash sale, I'm downloading it now.
I wanted to get this in the steam sale so thought I would check out the review and I wasn't surprised to hear it was another port from Bethesda Softworks that isn't up to standard.
the way the game rage ends and the way doom3 starts sorta makes me wonder if id is going to bring the two together for a even bigger game
They really should re-review this since the updates, I'm having no problems with it now.
Just picked this up for pc for 20 bucks my friend has it also coop and campaign alone good for 20 imo. Not to interrested in mp but will try it. Gamestop is where i got it from in store they just marked it down today he told me.
I just got this game and he's right about the textures being very inconsistent. Some things look amazing and others can look worse than Doom 3. Either way, I think the patches will help things a lot AND I think this is the type of game that the fans will enjoy and modders will pick up on to improve some things such as the weirder looking textures and other random things to make the game fun.
Glitches aside, the ending totally ruined an otherwise enjoyable experience... Seriously - come on ID
Just too bad the resolutions and controls on consoles suck even more, especially for FPSs... I tried this game on the PS3, but I absolutely hate getting around with a gamepad in first person view. Too bad there are problems with the PC-version, or I might have bough it some time. Unless they fixed stuff, I'm not getting it at all...
Who did the review? There was no reference to the fact that it is an ID Software game! An ID game poor on graphics? An ID game that works better on consoles than the PC? Where is this world going...
Rage had me in "Rage" to get it to work!! Eventually when I got it to work it was fun playing it. I only played it half way and moved on to something else. I will give it a try again but right now I am just too hooked on that SKYRIM. :)
It's a good thing you hurried and reviewed this game before they patched it or you might have had to give it the same score as the consoles versions. So what you're saying is this game is better played on 7 year old hardware than a rig with this generations kit. You're also saying it's better played with a controller than a mouse and keyboard. A first person shooter better played with a controller? I'd really like to know what the qualifications are to be a reviewer on this site. Seems all you need is a reasonable command of the English language. Is that about it?
I just beat the game today. Quite a disappointing ending as many have mentioned. The game was incredibly short if you ask me. Of course I did not do that many side quests or racing, but that's mainly because I never felt the need to. Developers need to find convenient and even forceful measures in which to make the player explore more. Fallout 3 is a great example.
short game ?! I had fun, but last level ?!? i was thinking, some Quake 1 style boss. but not bad, great graphics
@SY_shoot Posted Oct 10, 2011 12:01 am GMT "longer I play this thing, its better and better." The fact you have the Daikatana logo as your avatar makes me doubt your taste :)
People are talking the bugs have been fixed since day 1. Its so sad that now adays most games need a patch from day one, i remember 10 years ago a patch was something pretty wow, many people didn't even had internet connection and they rely on CDs that came in magazines to get their hands in the patches. But even the games that needed patch were nothing like this, patches are something so natural today that people dont even care much about them. I miss the days where the SP was king and the eventually MP was good enough to be sold separately, i miss the days where games didn't really need patching after they were released (execptions be made).
Seems like a low score.. would't have complained at first but after AMD fixed their driver it was good. Been nothing but entertaining, the world is so detailed I don't blame them for having a low res texture or two
20 hours? I got about 10. The whole thing was shallow. On the surface it looks promising but then before u know it its over. Weapon customization was almost non-existent and the sound effects are horrible. Mixed with all the technical issues, the game fails.
Inconsistent textures, to short, to linear, and almost zero exploration. Lets not forget a very bland story.
If you have technical issues download patches and search for fixes. This is why Pc shines. There are infinite number of mods and patches for games that make your 50 bucks worthwhile. If you don't want to mess with this stuff just buy a plug and play console and shut your mouth.
@mihael88 the game is super buggy. So maybe the launch version of Rage does indeed deserve a 7.0. Of course the game will be patched and fixed, the reivew will never be changed or amended, or they will add a new 2nd post release review. plenty of games have gotten terrible review on game spot just because the the game had a bad/glitchy launch. Its too bad that gamespot doesnt go back and rereview a game after it has been patched a few times. look at New Vegas and Brink. Two perfect examples of games that were amazing once the kinks were worked out...
It's pretty tough to review a pc game. Ya, we should expect a quality product once release day hits, but you can't expect every game to be released perfectly without any errors. How the company addresses the issue is much more important. An update by gamespot post patch would be nice and maybe even an updated score. Of course, you can't do this with every game otherwise we would be waiting for a review until a fix was released and it's different for every game. I think if a company fixes the problems in a timely manner, the score for the game and their dedication should be rewarded and re-visited by gamespot
I actually watched this review and read all these comments before buying it, and I thought the game was going to be CRAP, I got the game last week, and have been playing it for 3 days now, and I love it! Rage's technical issues are very minor, and hardly worth mentioning. Unless it was something that was unplayable, or crashing all the time, I don't see why people are complaining and making a huge soap Oprah about it. The game itself is actually a pretty descent game for a FPS. If your reading these comments and haven't played the game before, try the game for yourself, you're the best judge your games.
The art design in this game really draws you into the world... although the muddy blocky textures of the wall or box right beside a high res texture npc really brings you out of the world. The gameplay was fun - the shooting was challenging against the jumping, twirling, climbing mutants, and the racing was fun too. But man those really low rez textures on some of the areas look like some $hit from year 2000. Just walk up close to any wall in any area and examine the junk laying around ...some areas are really hit or miss.
So even though these issues have been patched within a week or so of release there isn't a single notice of that and the PC version still sits with a lower score.
Great review! The game looks real good, but I'm gonna pass due to technical issues. I'd rather do without than try to play a game that glitches and keeps crashing.
Bah it took me a week too config the broke game on a pc took me maybe less then 8 hours too beat the game no side quest doing a 2nd run this over hyped over rated POS not worth the 60 wait till it hits 30 or less.there is really no where too go in the game mp is a waste.side missions are a joke hell you can have more fun playing FO3 or FNV.
Went to rage website and downloaded some drivers and "hotfix for my ati card and I still have some graphical bugs sadly. But aside that, It IS a beautiful game and it runs really really well on my rig.. I will agree that many textures seem prettier from a far then up close though. sometimes they are a bit "monet" looking even from a far. It is still a highly enjoyable game though and I am having fun with it.
So can anyone explain why the majority of the footage in this review is OBVIOUSLY from the console versions when he's SPECIFICALLY reviewing just the PC version? Whatever. @Blackheart_RE Funniest use of that meme that I've seen in a while dude. Haha.
Maybe PC game developers is releasing bugged games on purpose. Like to eliminate piracy of sorts. Ex. You can't download the fix patch if your copy is not registered online.
@jmaybury I totally agree. Patch and Patch all they want and we wont be arriving on anything new. Well maybe except with the Resistance 3 1.02 patch
Gamespot the Day One patch already fixed the screen popping according to some ppl. I dont know, I bought the console because PC has no Split Screen CO-OP.
You know id Software have always amazed me both in the PC and console side of things. They've always done well, played it smart and like Blizzard and many others they really put an effort into their work. Unfortunately they have dissapointed me this time. Not because Rage is a terrible game. It's no doubt really fun. But because of the lacking option to manual adjust things. I'm not saying no to auto-adjust. I'm just saying it should be an option and as an option may not have been such a problem. I almost feel punished as a PC gamer (I have nothing against consoles, it's just my own preference) when the consoles work amazingly yet the PC version, especially from a company who works so hard on their games and make them work and work well, is basically broken. I just hope they fix this problem soon. I really would like to enjoy this game along with the rest of those who can.
well well well... so "i didn't have any technical problem since the first day" kind of guys came ha? it's so interesting that these guys are here "now", i mean where were you while thousands of gamers were f***ed up with the pop in textures and all sort of bugs that makes the game unplayable? Is this a great game? Reaaly? Tell it to the people who were waiting this game for months, pre ordered it, gave 60 bucks and now even can't open this s*it? Yeah yeah it's a great game. It's playing without problem on my browser, even 720p, yeah that's a great game! Life is perfect when you are perfect, now that's the great truth about you.
