We check out the multiplayer mode in THQ's upcoming Xbox 360 action adventure game.
THQ's Saints Row has been a long time in coming. The original third-person action game with an urban twist was slated to ship last year for the Xbox 360, but despite its promising appearance, THQ and developer Volition opted to hold it. The additional development time has let Volition buff up the single-player game to a polished sheen and work on the game's multiplayer component. We finally got a chance to check out Saints Row's multiplayer at a recent event to see how it's shaped up.
The event let us try out four of the multiplayer game types that will be available--Gangster Brawl, Protect the Pimp, Big Ass Chains, and Blinged Out Ride. Gangster Brawl is a timed, deathmatch-style free-for-all that finds you running around capping fools. You'll be able to collect different weapons that spawn around the arena.
Protect the Pimp is an escort-style game that lets you play in one of two gangs. At the start of each round, one gang member will be randomly adorned with a pimp hat, marking that player as the pimp. The pimp's goal is to reach a set location in the environment. The other members of his gang are charged with making sure this happens and must defend him from the opposing gang, who must take him out before he reaches his goal. The pimp will need the protection, as the character's only means of defense is a mighty one-hit-kill pimp slap, which, while useful, isn't quite enough to take out a bunch of armed combatants.
Big Ass Chains is a free-for-all to collect chains off the bodies of your opponents and then deliver them to a drop-off point that moves throughout the match. Though you can drop off chains one at a time, you'll earn far more points by dumping off multiple chains at one time, as the chains you hold serve as score multipliers. Of course, industrious players that try this approach will have to contend with being singled out: The more chains you hold, the brighter your icon will glow, alerting your foes that you're rolling with the phat loots.
Blinged Out Ride is a gang-on-gang competition to trick out a car. This challenging mode requires the team to earn cash so as to "level up" a car to a set level and then drive it to a specific spot to show it off. You'll have a large chunk of city to do your business, which helps make the game type the craziest of the four. Collecting the cash from your opponents is a big task, and trying to keep your car safe is a big challenge, as well.
The modes all had a fair amount of appeal thanks to the number of people playing. The lobby system for the mode is a cool indoor area where you can practice by plugging away at your fellow players while you wait. You'll also be able to show off your customized character, which you can create using the game's extensive character editor.
The controls took some getting used to, especially the driving model. Reps on hand pointed out that, much like so many other aspects of the game, you'll find a good amount of customizable options for the control scheme in the game. As such, most players will be able to tweak their on-foot and driving controls independently to ensure their scheme suits their play style.
From what we played, the multiplayer in Saints Row has promise, but it also has some rough edges to it in terms of camera, handling, and pacing. The camera can be challenging, especially when driving, and the default control scheme isn't as easy to pick up and play as we'd like. The pacing of matches also seems rough, though that's tied more to the size of the areas, which are respectably big--possibly too big. That said, we plan on spending more time with Saints Row and playing around with its various customization options to see if these issues are sorted out through some customizing. Saints Row is currently slated to ship this fall for the Xbox 360. Look for more on the game in the coming months.
Yea its very similar to GTA but it adds alot of new features besides the updated graphics and it will keep me busy till gta 4
I've just played the demo and was surprised the level to which this copies GTA, right down to the map with icons for the various stores and mission locations! Having said that, it improves on GTA by having a decent targetting system and, better still, a navigation system built into the map. But best of all is the fact that you can customise your controls for driving and on-foot. I gave up on San Andreas on the Xbox because of the insane and non-configurable button mapping (well, that and the appalling graphics), so kudos to THQ for getting this right in Saints Row. I think my only criticism is that the title is ambiguous: is it Saint's Row, Saints' Row or Saints Row? All three mean very different things...
Dam i thought i was going to hate this game but in the end i was left wanting more, at first i thought that the games graphics suck'd just from looking at pic's but once i played small details made the expierience a lot and i mean a' lot more enjoyable perhaps more than all the gta games i guess it has to do with how bad a$$ the explosion's look and how clear the character models look in the end i just want the game to come out already
The online looks tight as hell with ganstar brawl, protecting the pimp, bigass chains and blinged out ride. If there is "create a gang" optionthats the first thing im going to do and anybody welcome to join "Bloodz" wearing red
I just got done playing the demo and I think it is way better than any GTA. I don't know what makes it so much better but there is just a better overall feel to the game. The best Diffrence from GTA is that there is no stupid targeting system, In this game you actually have to aim. That will make for a much better game. The cut scene graphics in GTA: SA dont even come close to the in-game graphics of this game.
Alot of you seem to be missing the Facts, It's on 360!! and even though alot of it is copied, And I agree with whoever said "GTA can never be Duplicated" Saint's Row is it's own game, GTA IV wont be out till next year or later because you know they'll keep pushing back the release date, And when GTA IV does come out I'm Fairly certain It'll Blow the preverbial doors off Saint's Row! For one reason they'll have the upperhand on Graphics, I'm sure the graphics and engines will be way better in a year.
Why can there be so much fuss about a game that introduces multiplayer and few minor details to an already existing game from a differente developer? Certainly the multiplayer looks interesting, but beyond that the games adds not too much to the GTA franchise in order to be worth the whole 60 bucks.
1st off, I am not against the game, I think its awsome, secondly u r wrong.... U can customize ur character on GTA SA, u can go and buy cloths, work out to stay in shape, even hook up certain vehicles... Also, it is still a "GTA clone" in th sence that it is an open world game, free roaming, with gang battles, and the whole hip hop feel...I didnt make it a GTA clone, or start that, its been around for a while, thats just what people use to catagorize games like this....honestly I thik it will be good, but after seeing 25 to life, it may suck too like that one did we wont know for sure until the demo is out, in early august... Also, it should be known this game was in production before GTa SA came out, its been in production for a long time...so it should be refined...
i donno why you guys think this game is going to suck. its gonna be a great game. First of all its gonna be online GTA SA was never online so thats not a copy. Next u can customize ur character (never on gta sa) so thats not a copy another thing is that this is the first xbox 360 open world game so why criticize it. I am not against gta sa i have 90 hours on it besides gta4 is more than a year away last of all u guys will prob buy both GTA 4 And Saints row they are both gonna be great games ps. dont criticize a game u never have tried
Wow, u must have missed somthing, its like a cone of GTa, that is what its suppossed to look like smart guy....they went for an open world game, and how do u know what its ike until u played it? Not so smart after all...I mean just look at Katamari Damaci, or however u spell it, game looks dumb, but its incredibly fun (according to many people and web sites like this one and ign.com)...
This game looks like it's gonna suck hard. Looks like GTA: SA for the Eminem set. Straight from tha streetz of Suburbia. Asses.
I think this game can pull it off, but there are a lot of "IFS" in there, it defiatly has to be touched up a little, hopfully it will turn out decent, after watching the videos and stuff, it might just pull it off....I just hope it doesnt end up like that crappy 25 to life game, they tried close to the same thing they are doing with Saints Row, the only difference is that Saints row is on 360, and has an open world environment....25 had the character customizing, and online "Gang Wars", but the game was just boring....oh well We will all see in a couple weeks, the developers said they will have a demo to download right in the begining of August, like the 1st or 2nd...
Grand Theft Auto is the best . Grand Theft Auto IV Rocks !! it will release for the Xbox 360 ... YEAH !!!
Sounds good! However, I haven't found a single good urban themed game since GTA:SA. Pretty sure i have tried them all.
Looks like it should of came out on the fisrt Xbox. And I bet they are going to jack you on market place.
Saint's Row is just a GTA-inspired action game and i'm srue that it will be banned in Singapore. And of couse, Grand Theft Auto 4 will be better. ^_^
im looking forward to being in a lobby with my friends or just ppl i found and running around shooting them waiting for the game to start. That'll be alot of fun, prolly almost as much as the game itself.
"trenken This game looks terrible. It looks like a PS2 game at best." Do the graphics in this game seriously look like PS2 to you? I mean seriously?
idk understand why every1 is hating cuz it looks like GTA. GTA was a good game. Heck, I'd probably buy San Andreas again if it had these graphics and physics. Also, it gives everyone what they want....MULTIPLAYER!!!
A guy who played the demo of SR gave it a 9.5. And this is based on the demo. This is the guy who used to bash SR. I agree with m-milton. Ignorance breeds more ignorance. Some of you guys bash this game the same way Jack Thompson does with GTA. JT never played GTA. LOL. http://www.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=24809127&msg_id=273975723
Just because you can free roam and shoot means it is a GTA clone? this game is gonna be way better than all the GTA's!
Another GTA knock off that will be...well, knocked off only this knock off will be the first with next gen graphics
the only reason I want this game is so me and my buddies can goof off. See if we can't get the cars to get ontop of the buildings and ....stuff.
I just wanna say to kkknaruto: You have the best username ever and I love you, man. Also, I predict this game will get an 8.4 from GS. What do you guys think?
Saint Row is the reason I first wonted a 360 I cant wait to have Saints Row and GTA and im really looking forward to Dead Rising
game looks pretty neat if online mode will catch then i assume it'll B oddDAhook! garfix looks clean yet detailed, lighting effects look abit low...but who givs a damn as long as the game the cars the charecters and the explosions look good im up for the destruction looking farward on putting my hand on the demo two weeks from now!
Sony fanboys get the OUT of here!! Your bashing on this game just because you dont have your 1,000,000,000 system yet so therfore your to damn bored so you have to make fun of the games we are getting.Saints row will be playible and i will be good.So stop saying it has "PS2" graphics and that this is Another 25 to life game...Well news flash buddy YOU HAVENT PLAYED IT..So intil then shut your mouth ^__^ -B69-
