THIS SHOULD NOT BE MISSION-BASED...Come on, people, haven't we learned anything from iconic games of a decade ago? When are we going to get a real space sim that finally incorporates mech combat the rudiments of which we are seeing here?

Freespace 3 when ??

I hope THQ and Volition make a sequel of that great Space sim opera -game

I lol-ed at mechs in space. Its like introducing a slow, practically stationary practice target for enemy fighters and capital ships point defense guns.

However this is a space fighter game so its definitely worth a try.

I'm still waiting for a decent Freespace 2 like game especially one which would introduce capital ships on FS2 scale(6km Colossus or 2-3km standard destroyers) as well as battles were you are not expected to kill everything single-handed(FPS style) and were other bigger ships have a purpose other than to die.

Not for me, all I'm seeing here is an arcade shooter in 'space' but it's not really because the physics are earth bound. You want to remove the jousting type of combat you should have added newtonian physics (even partially, no harm in leaving in some drag for game play purposes)) where you can change facing while continuing to travel your thrusted direction.

Best of luck to them though, I hope they game is a success, the genre needs love right now. I just hope it doesn't get over saturated with rushed crap, especially after the success of Star Citizens crowd funding campaign.

@GarGx1 In other words, 'The mech isn't ugly, embarrassing or awkward enough, the controls don't make you hate life and this raises the bar on space combat games, making everything else that's available look like wasted money' which is the real reason you don't like it. Even if the game isn't perfect, it's the first that's, for whatever odd reason, pushed space sim to something more than painfully-analogous control of a flying brick.

@tgwolf

Nope, I don't like it because it's a third person arcade game and it's not for me. That's my opinion, nothing more. The genre/game type is not my cup of tea.

As I said above, good luck to them and I hope their game is a success.

i've seen this video and the first thing come up is ... is this a revival of Macross game from PSX? it is clearly similliar to Macross. i mean if you've played macross before then you will definitly notice the mech transforming and multiple missile lock on system. it is good but you cant call that revolutional.

Graphicly speaking, its stunning in every aspect. spesificly the homeworldy atmosphere. Only the HUD thing, i hope it appear more appealing and informative when it finished.

The space fighter and mech design? personally i prefer japanese mech design and this is more than i expected. damn, i wish back when Freelancer launched they would've fighters like this.

we've already seen freelancer, freespace, macross, omegaboost, gundam, sins of solar empire, homeworld, and recently Galaxy on fire 2 HD etc2 and we know the game some of the mentioned game is considered a benchmark for space sims game. from what i see, Zero have combined all the good aspect from other great space sim game and mix them with their own unique style so it is a good thing.bluntly, i believe Strike suit zero have all the potential to be equally placed among other great space sims games.

They say the mech isn't a gimmick but it really is.

Wing Commander countered the "jousting" problem with the introduction of the Arrow and ships that "slide"; separating turn from flight direction and allowing ships more flexible strike options. And there are a lot of things they could have done besides "sliding"--they could have gone the Babylon 5 way.

But they chose a mech.

Now, if other parts of the game required the mech concept then that wouldn't be so bad, but why a mech in space? The gameplay change that mode introduces could have been handled other ways that would make more sense.

If you want yo know how to design a space sim ,copy Freespace.

Im not sure of this transformer in space is going to appeal to traditional space sim enthusiasts, who played WIng commander and Freelancer but it good to see they are coming back in favour.  I dont agree of the premise of jousting, how can you dogfight without it?

It's like Macross, more or less, only with better graphics.  I wish someone would make an offspring off Zone of Enders and Macross, that would be one hell of a game. Or bring out Heavy Gear from the dead...

Promising, let's see how this one develops...

What left me so enchanted with games like the wing commander series and other classics of the space sim era was how well they projected that "sense of venturing into the unknown."  Locating/docking into a space station  hidden in a murky dust clouds full of lightning, or exploring a section of the asteroid field to investigate a huge, ancient, abandoned spaceships of an unknown origin, etc.... and the games did such a good job weaving all that experience into a tale of epic proportions :) gosh what i would give, to experience the thrill once again!

About this video...this video gives me a strong impression that this game's all about flash, button-mashing console style action with a paper thin plot. I'll wait and see what the reviews have to say, but tbh what I saw in this video kinda disappointed me.

I will never understand nerfing worlds based around mech warfare. I need only refer to classic mech anime to prove that lush futuristic universes can and most likely would surround such a glorious advancement. It would take an impossible series of cataclysms and major catastrophes coupled with the most diabolical despotism in human organizations (Liberal and Socialist bureaucracy comes readily to mind for some reason...) to turn what promises and should by rights be an ultra tech paradise barring epic warfare to turn humanity into a rag-tag handful of scrappy and petty tribes. Let's grow up a bit, I don't know why people put garbage bags over their heads when they make games.

I miss the wing commander games. I also miss having video with live actors after every mission. Big thing in the late 90s with Red Alert and Wing Commander. Had decent name actors in them too.

He says it's not a gimmick but it screams gimmick to me.  I'm not much of a fan of the whole mech thing, gundam and that type of stuff I don't much care for those games.

Looks like it plays exactly like Warhawk from PS1 by Singletrac. Great game. This blends some Homeworld and Robotech into that and BAM. New Milkshake.

tgwolf
tgwolf

@phrozac ...I would agree with the Robotech part...though if that were anywhere in the mix there would be NO NEED for any other elements. Robotech is one of the paragon examples of mech implementation. If there is another, non-anime-based mech iteration, I have yet to see one that truly does justice to mech warfare, technology or even any competent worlds and backgrounds that would reflect it. By all means bring on the Robotech!

phrozac
phrozac

@tgwolf  @phrozac I was comparing it to similar games and not just anime. I think Warhawk on PS1 predates any 3d Robotechs. Warhawk is a great comparison anyway as the Warhawk ship could also hover and rotate in place just like a harrier jet. For SSZ, the hovering Harrier has been replaced with an anime mech, while the game itself employs a lot of audiovisual cues from Homeworld. I think it's a great hybrid of inspirations.

looks good but I dont really see his idea of transforming into a mech being 'innovative'.  The old Robotech games from back in the day had the same thing.

Act_Chill
Act_Chill

@oflow In space combat games you follow an enemy from behind and shoot, however, if they flew in a circle your bullets would miss because they traveled straight. Switching to a mech lets you quickly turn at the cost of speed and gives some different attack options. Not super innovative, but it does fix a problem.

two things which I don't like, not sure if anyone else felt the same. First I am growing up with the likes of X-wing, TIE Fighter, and Jane's F/A-18. The third person view is just very annoying for me, especially for a space combat game. Second the cinematic constantly take your controls away, this I don't like it, it breaks the immersion factor. Instead they should have a "Look at" function where you choose if you want to look at an event or not, instead of forcing you to look.

Steba93
Steba93

@Grimkillah I think there actually is also first person view, I've seen on another video that they go to FP for a short time but I'm not sure if you can play all the way like that or not

@Steba93  @Kunakai The possibility of FP mode is very encouraging. This mech transformation in battle reminded me of variable fighter in The Super Dimension Fortress Macross.

@Kunakai  @Grimkillah I commented before watching this video so wasn't sure :) So yeah, fp mode is definitely in

Simplythebest12

@Grimkillah This is not a space simulation this is a space arcade game. The cinematics from what i hear are minimum and only exist in the story-campaign mode they can bypassed by pressing a keyboard key

Grimkillah
Grimkillah

@Simplythebest12 I hope you are right because during this demo, too many forced cinematic really breaks up the flow of the game.

Reminds me of Colony Wars mixed with ZOE. Once it hits XBLA I'll be all over this.

@Indoorheroes Colony Wars: Red Sun was awesome, and it looks like the dose of ZoE in this adds to the overall experience quite a bit. This is a PC exclusive though, so it's unlikely you'll be able to get it from XBLA.

@ziggyww  @Xenuri  @exeQuisite Star Citizen is being made by the guy who made Freelancer, and it's gonna be an evolution of the formula. If you want something like Freelancer, Star Citizen is your best bet.
