Can you choose your character in single player?

The story mode is set up so each region is completed by a different character. Once you finish the game you can play any level as any character, including Griff.

During the story mode you can only use the character they pick for you, goes with the storyline. This is also how you unlock the other characters for free.
On the other hand, the two other game modes let you pick your character, pay attention, they do have different stats. Hope this helps.
