You see, right before the enemy is "defeated" they throw a smoke bomb to the ground and make haste several yards into the level so they can have another go at Mario.
How does Mario cope with Peach's "time of the month?"

Yes, Bowser will be your best man, if and only if, he gets to kidnap your wife every third Monday of every other month.
Mario loathes surfing all together. He agreed to surf that one time only if Piantas massaged his feet with chocolate every night for a week. Male Piantas, not female ones...
