Kevin VanOrd leaves tab targeting behind in this video review for Tera.
Combat looks attractive, indeed, as does the game overall, if only in the sense of visual acuity. A pity the entire rest of it is generic asian MMO. From the character design to their movement to the cutscenes to the questing. To succeed so well in combat, only to give the same old "go talk to x" and "kill y critters" quests as some sleazy low-budget F2P asian MMO? He's right, the combat is probably the only thing keeping this thing afloat, with help from the visual sharpness. But good as it is, even 7.5 good, how long will it keep a diversified player entertained?
This game really intirgues me but a sub based game never ever sits well with me, I loved GW2 because I didn't have to pay a stupid sub fee. if this was free to play I would hop on it in no time
I bought this game and played it through to about lvl 30 as a Slayer. It's the best looking MMO I've played (I admit, I haven't played SWTOR) with a very fun, different and involving combat system as the reviewer extensively refers to... but it's not enough. Not for me anyway.
The game itself is a little too stale and it also needs a subscription. I finished with it when the included game-time ended but I do miss the visuals and the combat.
GW2 hasn't quite gripped me either though (yet). Greatest appeal with that is that it's b2p. If TERA was the same, I'd probably casually play that.
@dawil123 You're right. This is pretty close to a Monster Hunter MMO :)
A cutesy WoW knockoff....snore
I'm with Madmenno below, to me there is Eve, everything else is sort of the shallow end of the MMO pool.
If I were 14 and not 40, perhaps.
For the record I am not a little rich brat boy. I am 31 and I upgrade my pc every 1.5 to 2 years and always build a SLI tower out of my own money. Yes I agree that graphics don't make a good game. There are games with crappy graphics that are awesome. A good example of this would be Mario for the NES and SNES. However, Blizzard's WOW doesn't even come close to that in my opinion. Yeah graphics are one of my major complaints about WOW, but look at Ultima Online..... UO came out in 1999 and it is a game that is so much fun and pvp is so much more hardcore that it doesn't matter that the graphics are way outdated. Wow on the other hand has so many flaws that the only thing that could possibly save it for me is up to date 2012 graphics like that seen in Batman Arkham City, Max Payne 3, Tera, Battlefield 3, etc. I tried WOW and it was my worst mmo experience ever. Now after playing Tera where there is no lame "Tab Target", and you get a crosshair instead; I doubt I could ever go back to a "Tab Target" mmo ever. The only hope would be Everquest Next which I have so much hope for. I actually had the chance to try GW2 Beta and after playing it for a hour I am going to head to Gamestop and cancel my pre-order and just stick to Tera. In my opinion WOW is like a tobacco addiction. Everyone does it even tho they know it's a bad habit.
Looks to me like the review summary for this game should have been "TERA provides all the depth of any MMO including quests, crafting, an intricate plot, PvP, and combines for the first time high rez titties with old school skinner box techniques to turn horny nerds into raging fanboys".
Skill? Looks to me eve online is still the mmorpg that requires the most skill and teamplay. No trolling, just speaking my mind kids :)
Anyone who rates this game less then a 9.0 is an IDIOT! GW2 beta was horrible and basically just more GW1 crap. Tera is the most innovative mmo as far as combat goes and in mmos 90% of what you do evolves around combat. Plus Tera has better graphics. I tried every mmo to date and all them couldn't hold my attention for more then a day. Wow lasted a few hours then I deleted it and concluded it was the worst piece of crap ever! I do like mmo's a lot it's just that over the years only a few were even worth buying and those were Ultima Online, Everquest 1 & 2, and Tera.
World of Warcraft = fail (audience was the non mmo crowd with 5 year old pc's!)
Age of Conan = fail
Aion = fail
Asheron's Call = fail
Lineage = fail
Runescape = fail
Sar Wars the Old Republic = fail
Lord of the Rings Online = fail
Runes of Magic = fail
Guild Wars 1 (poor boys mmo) = biggest fail ever!
Guild Wars 2 beta (poor boys mmo)= more GW1 crap and lousy graphics compared to Tera
EVERQUEST 1 & 2 = Awesome goodness (good graphics and most content ever)
Ultima Online = Awesome goodness (pre 1999 only & best pvp ever!)
Tera = Awesome goodness (Fun & fast combat with up to date graphics)
@mumrahh1 Oh and hating on people that play wow with old pcs don't mean its a bad game either not everyone's a spoiled little rich brat boy like you.
@mumrahh1 You know you are a funny little focker that has some dumb opinions wow is awesome and so is tera and alot of others to different people so keep being the funny little focker that you are.
@mumrahh1 No one cares what you think. over 12 million people (Though I'm not one of them) disagree with you about WoW. You have an opinion, great. But don't trash other games. Just another mad guy on the internet.
if 30 million people believe in the existence of demons and angels and 2 headed dogs and dragons, then they automatically become real?
@Thumbler76 Fair point, however you thinking that WoW is a bad game is your opinion. Repeating myself again, these gamers don't give a damn what you think. If it makes them happy, the game is doing what it was created to do. Trashing other games for no reason is pretty childish. Not to mention WoW is like 10 years old or something. I don't even like the game. I just hate when people are like "A IS BETTER THEN B BECAUSE I SAY SO." No. Stay in your basement.
@Dessicator no, it was simply my example. I meant to say that even if 12 million people prefer or like a game, it doesn't make it objectively a good game. It still can be crap, and the success has to be caused by different causes. Taste, or preference, is a personal valutation.
@Thumbler76 Apparently someone needs to buy you a dictionary so you can look up the difference between "belief" and "preference"
Obviously everyone has different tastes but I played during Beta and this is definitely one of the most boring and dissapointing MMOs I have played (I have played way too many to count, yes I am an MMO freak). The questing is simply aweful, the "fan service" is embarrassing, and the game is just plain boring in general. I personally was not impressed with the combat system either.
@Aisar87 I'd be curious to see an mmo that is really fun to play with the actual gameplay mechanics. Really.The combat system is for me one of the most important features in this kind of game. The questing system is almost the same in every mmo, except perhaps for GW2. The environment is often sacrified for processing power reasons.
@Miniicy post an example. I played deludent:
and after playing Tera (I don't know yet if Tera will survive the first months or if it will die quickly to become free-to-play) I will NEVER return to any of them or to any other mmo with a point and click combat system. That's for sure.
@Thumbler76 That you should=)
@Miniicy I've never played any of the ones you listed. No, Tera is not innovative, and its gameplay may not be new as well, but I find it running quite smoothly.
I think I'll enjoy it as long as it lasts.
@Thumbler76 PSO, dragon nest, vindictus, etc
Lets not lie tho, action rpg in an open world is something very rare so tera=nice, but the gameplay itself aint new.
I would like to play this game but the reviews seem really mixed. I am tired of the combat of traditional MMOs but I like the massively multiplayer part. Why do you have to be 60 bucks plus subscription? Why can't you have a demo around so I can play the combat for myself? I have to pass on this one due to the high price tag. Sure would like to try it though.
@ocsgabe I've been in betas too but beside the bad story and quests i didnt like the combat system either.Only good thing about it are graphics,but i dont play for graphics.And i dont approve games launched with missing content,makes the company look greedy.
@ocsgabe Hey I played the beta to try it out and why the combat is fun and different, the story and questing is so bad I'd never make it to 50 I'm glad I played beta cause I'm saving 60 buck and definitely not buying it.
actually only thing what is good is graphic, rest.. UI/inventory/map/travel/economy/etc is terrible
PS hmm they fixed dam minimaps bug? or still its a bit wrong??
Were it not for the fact that my computer sucks, and that I absolutely abhor MMO's I would so buy this game.
I agree with 7.5, just cause high end content isn't thier yet....But even wow didn't have high end contenet till 6 months after realse. Most people judge MMo's to quickly. For example FFXIV was crap and cuase it was crap when it came out it will always be known as crap no matter how much they improve. Swtor will be know as most hyped MMO with worst contentent. Wow is known as easy to get into, causal gamers, LOL 1-3 button pve. What I have learned abot the MMO market is to just play what feel fun for you. To me tera is fun so I will play it till I get bored. If you are looking for a next Gen MMO This one is fun Combat system feels engaging/ 5mans feel fun again, questing in this game is all kill quest, I haven't done pvp but Bgs come out this summer and possibly raids. IT JUST CAME OUT PEOPLE, It takes time for New MMo's to get to a fun point. If ya wan't F2P better quest/grinding Go Gw2...
@smwat I have to agree with what your saying here.I played FFXIV when it came out and it was horrible.Started playing again a month ago and the game is so much better now.But many wont know that because of how it was rated when it dropped.
"Play what you feel is fun for you".This is exactly how it should be.
@Dark_Arcitekt Um FFXIV still sucks I played it at launch and just played it recently still garbage.
