I don't think the author is justified in their criticism because it's our fault Sony and Microsoft make these announced announcements about announcements. They're Pavlov, we're the dogs, and the bell is the announcement. If you don't like it stop salivating.
Just a quick announcement to let you all know that there has been an announcement that there will be an announcement on 20 February from Sony about ... something. Announcement, announcement, announcement. The word has lost all meaning to me as I have read it so many times but I do know one thing, that all these announcement, announcement, announcements are an effort by Sony to get us gamers slavering like tigers at the zoo when the fat camp kids trot by. All aboard the hype train everyone. Toot, toot.
Well I am not having any of it because what we are going to be told on 20 February is that Sony have been developing a PS4 with a tenuous release date of Q4 2013, after which the suit in charge of the bleeding obvious at Sony is going to inform us that night follows day, the Pope is indeed a Catholic and that bears enjoy their poops 'al fresco'. Of course there might be a few shocks as well. New Little Big Planet. No way! A Naughty Dog exclusive. Stone the flaming crows! New Gran Turismo at launch! OK thats stretching things a bit.
You know that last episode of The Apprentice where the finalists have to present a new kind of shoe or something and its all a bit uncomfortable, well imagine that but with a bigger budget to spend on indoor fireworks and professional dancers. The only surprise will be which slightly confused celebrity will be led on stage. You know that Sony wont be cutting corners with a Kardashian but when Jay-Z (or whoever) comes bounding into the spotlight there will be plenty of navel-gazing after the inevitable awkward banter where Kaz Hirai asks Jay-Z 'Does Beyonce let you play games in the front room?' (Oh Kaz you card) and Jay-Z replies 'I played Street Fighter when I was a kid but don't bother much anymore can I have my cheque please?'
But fear not this will all be washed down by the thick, dry wheatgrass smoothie of a powerpoint presentation where lots of specs will fill up the screen and people like me who have to put up with this kind of brain laxative for a living will glaze over and start wishing they could go back to a time when our dreams of a wild new electronic frontier were alive and well. To think that I labelled all that pointless speculation and flimsy conjecture as a waste of time. Such ignorant guesswork seems like paradise now although on second thoughts this announcement, announcement, announcement probably won't hinder it by much, in fact it might crank it to 11. Will we never learn?
Then when all the dust has settled on Wednesday and caretakers are sweeping up all those drunken journos, throats sore from all that hooting and hollering, we will all feel a little bit hollow, desperate to fill the void within us that Sony have failed to. In our terrible sorrow we will have no choice but to start thinking about the next earth-shattering announcement, announcement, announcement when (and you'll never believe this) Microsoft will tell us that they have been developing a new console (shut uuuuuup) with (are you sitting down) a new (get ready for it). Halo! Its like stepping out the Matrix people.
You folks are kind a sad really...
Why are you complaining só much, you're not forced to do anything, it's all about FUN!
I'm having the time of my reading and wondering about the next generation, why? Because sony brainwashed me? NO! Because it's FUN! I like it!
What you guys doing its like going to a strip club and ask for a lap dance. The girl do the lap dance and you don?t like it. What do you do? Have 2 options you can change girl and see if it gets any better, or you don?t get lap dances anymore. It's kind a sad when you go to the front of the strip club a start telling people that they are a bunch of fools because the lap dance its the same dance that was last week.
Just enjoy the lap dance folks...
@reowulf Christ, what a stupid metaphor.
@strokesFC Sorry man, you lost me
@ihateds2 But why to be so sad about it, are guys really feeling that Sony, or any other company for that matter, dont know that anything they put on the market will sell? But guess what, you dont have to feel bad buying it, because it will be nice and better than the last generation, may be a lot better, but guess another thing, you dont really have to buy it... It takes too much energy been mad at all this, this is how everything works
I understand your concerns.
And I think all this is related to the fact that publishers are trying more and more to appeal casual masses, forgetting hardcore gamers in this operation. I fear that, a lot. So, instead of trying to make the next big move, or to improve the games themselves... all we hear is about social media integration, and portable gaming synchronisation.
I do not care a second for those things.
@fredyellowone Ha, you mean you don't want your achievements to appear on Facebook or the fact that you have turned on your PS4 to be tweeted to the world!?
Only joking, you are right of course and no matter what we see tonight it will always come down to the games and I mean the actual games that come out and not wild Molyneux-esque promises either.

@sextourist I suppose it's in the websites interests to try and whip us up into a mad fervour and keep us coming back. It's almost like it's come to the point that if they are not reporting something, no matter how trivial or speculative, then they are perceived as behind the times.
I don't know man, I'll be happy with the fact that these consoles will handle hundreds in multiplayer and have amazing graphics alone. However, there's a lot more to come, like built-in recording and sharing (finally) and virtual reality (either an OR partnership or competing products). If that doesn't satisfy you, I don't know what will. It seems like you're one of those that thinks all games nowadays suck and that's all that matters. I beg to differ.
@okassar I would love those things too butwe don't know for sure. Don't get me wrong I am excited about the future of gaming but I don't want to get carried away. For example the Kinect technology is amazing but it's never really delivered a game to match Microsofts spin.
@dylan417 OK is a bit of a grumpy take on the whole thing and I hope I am proved wrong but I may not be.
Excellent blog INK! Encapsulates everything I hate about announcements that actually announce, well, nothing and I'm left feeling that I've been mugged or something :D
lol.. good one.. I had a laugh with this... in all seriousness though.. i do hope they give the vita some love..
@voljin1987 I think that Vita integration will be a given. What they have done with the PS3/Vita stuff is pretty amazing already.
So lets just hope the next best thing is actually the next big thing and not some massive let down or over hyped product that doesn't deliver. Which is what we have been subjected to recently. Is that what your trying to say?
what... the hell.. are you blabbering about...
are you saying that announcement is unnecessary for anything? because it's kind of what you said, believe it or not.
do you expect Sony to just release their product without advertising it before selling it? or have you waited for so long you've gone mad? this is truly pathetic and childish, how is everyone fascinated by this? an argument will be welcomed, i hope to find out i'm in the wrong here so i can be pissed at myself for a changed instead of humanity
@Armyboy5 It's more all the empty hype that I am getting tired of. There are a lot of questions we have about the next generation and I will be interested to see if even half of them are answered on Wednesday. Although you may be right and I have just gone mad. It's possible!
Let me tell you something about what you just wrote here, you seems like an old grumpy grandfather with all the negativity and the criticism. I choose to think that the future is bright and exciting, but i also know that there always be people like you that dont make anything better just the opposite.
@franizarduy I love progress. It's just a bit hard to get excited about empty press statements and worrying rumours. Maybe the tone was a bit grumpy but it's a fond grumpy if you know what I mean.
@franizarduy I really don't think it was bad enough for your response. Ironically you are the one who sounds like a grumpy old man.
I like how well this journal sums up the framework for not just Sony's press conferences but Nintendo and Microsoft as well. Good job. Best part that had me loling was the "The only surprise will be which slightly confused celebrity will be lead on stage." Because this crap happens for so many press conferences that it is sad but true.
@Wula_ It's true. I did single out Sony on this blog but they all do the same. We still lap it up though. Like mugs!
After seeing god of war 3 on the ps3 how great it was and amazing scenes, I am defenitely excited for Ascension, but that's the series I'm most excited for on the ps4.
lol big anouncement will be uncharted 4 for ps3 lol!! it just wouldnt make sense to release this year u got a couple of new slims coming out next month in different colors not to mention the last of us releasing this summer maybe they should have called it the last ps3 exclusive to bring in ps4 or just should have made it for the ps4 instead.
@jets78 They may release The Last Of Us on both. You get that sometimes at a change between generations.
Very good and you're right why are they announcing an announcement of course it could all be a red herring to get Microsoft to play its hand first just a thought.
@thejudge808 Possibly. You know that these companies never do anything without thinking about the competition.
I think a lot of people here are being hypocrites. Of course there is a lot of hype about this upcoming console, there has been speculation and whiny fans all over the globe desperately pleading for a new gen console for years, and that same whining reached an especially critical peak the last 6 months or so. Now they finally get to see a glimpse of it and all they can muster to say is how there are so much announcements being pumped out by this gold mine of an industry (no sh*t) and how it was handled better in the old days? What exactly made it better; the ridiculously blissful expectations of a child? Well, whoop-de-do! So what exactly is your point?
@DiamondSlicer I know what you mean. We all bluster about the hype but still read it all and watch it all. I think it's more that the real facts are hidden amongst all the guff. Then there are those that just swallow it all hook, line and sinker.
Sony has a lot to mend before gamers are going to ditch their PS3s for a newer PS4. If Sony denies bc and used game ability then sales are not going to climb the charts. Gamers are still under the hacking episode. I really do not know if Sony really listens to the wants and desires of the gaming community. If they would deliver on gaming desires they would clearly overshadow MS.
@FlashCharge my ps3 ditched ME a few years back with the YLOD. i just want a console with great games that works for more than 15 months. i don't care if it folds your laundry or takes out the trash.
@FlashCharge For me backwards compatibility is a must for the next gen especially with all the downloadable games and cloud stuff.
rofl. awesome write up. thanks for the giggles. im not mocking you, i think you're correct with those thoughts.
