Note: I am currently going through rage that the servers are down on Day 2, so I'm writing this first impressions based on earlier observations

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. No, I'm not talking about the infuriating server issues, which I've had little issues with until day two of the game. I'm talking about building cities to have them, somewhat literally, burn, collapse and sink into the swamp. Sim City has a steep learning curve, but that's part of what's lured me in hook, line and sinker.

After putting in 4-5 hours of game play, which may be a liberal under-exaggeration, I'm convinced that the next city and region will be better! Though it may be sad that my last city was less successful than my first one, I have the perseverance to try and carry on. Watching vids helps out too.

The concept is simple in theory: try and build a city and try not to eff it up. After building that first road and setting up your Town Hall, though, things become quite a bit more complicated. It has that in common with the original Sim City, which was the last one I played.

When it works, this game oozes charm. The visuals are a good mix of cartoonish and realistic animations. Light instrumental music is nice to listen to and keeps me calm when times are tense, juggling the different aspects of making people happy and building a healthy economy and community. The emphasis on roads, smaller cities, and an overall region are interesting changes and add some more strategic elements to the formula many people love. Also all of the residents (and you) spend simoleans and speak in sim speak, I mean, if that's not just adorable I don't know what is.

I had a blast playing it for hours, trying to keep my city duct taped together as it economically collapsed. The simulation is impressive as well, with the buildings being constructed and there being heavier traffic at rush hour. It adds a nice touch to an already impressive game.

Sure, the DRM issue will be worked out, but the multi player aspects sound impressive, if not a bit too much like actual work. So far, my experience in multi player is making a public region then people come in and claim the other two so I can't claim them. Awesome, right?

So, for now, I continue the struggle of building a city that doesn't burn and fall into the swamp. I played it for one good night, but that was enough for it to stick in my mind and make me want more. Try, try, again.

This was posted on a Simcity News Artcle in the comments, on Rock Paper Shotgun:

"Cinek says:

?So how idiotic can EA be?? ? there are no boundaries.
No boundaries for that!

Whole this garbage about that game is just hard to listen.
Oh, and to add more into an insult: It seems like the game is completely unplayable in a middle and late stage of city development. The game engine cannot handle the complex simulation at all, and city turns into total chaos ? eg. only a small fraction of population actually goes to work, everyone else remain endlessly unemployed.

Sorry, but this game is one, gigantic failure.

Which as a great shame, cause I really love this series! "

Dont know what to think of it, but oh well...

Update: This is the longest I've been able to play before the servers go down.  I think for the server I'm on, it just keeps getting filled to capacity.  Why don't they add more US servers? /Sigh

I use to like playing simcity alot but I dont agree with always online because what if your Internet goes down your knackered aren't you no Internet connection, no simcity game so that is my reason why I will never buy simcity 2013 I should have to be connected to the internet to play a game EA have to sort them selfs out in my opinion

Server issues aside, I have heard a lot of posotive feedback for this game, more so tan similar simulation titles, It's a genre I've never delved into myself but if Sim City really is as fascinating as it sounds I may just have to break that duck.

My thoughts on this, Sim City (2013) should've been free-to-play  pay-to-unlock if they really going down this road. And they shouldn't have name it Sim City. Sim City Societies 2 is more like it.

Initial launch issues will be resolved and we'll all be happy in the near future.

My problem with always 'on' DRM is this; I really enjoy playing games from yesteryear. I still play titles from the 90's. I don't think EA will be supporting servers for this game 20 years from now. So this software has a limited life. Sure I still bought a copy but this DRM trend is very concerning.

@mlowery I've not bought a copy because by supporting them in their DRM choices, then we as consumers tell them it's acceptable.  Doesn't matter how much complaining we do, the only bottomline is money.

I am so happy I learned my lesson from Diablo 3. If you're going to charge people a lot of money for a game, make sure it works. Its frustrating enough, waiting for the game to finish downloading, then come to find out they couldn't get it to work on their end, does not make me happy. LOL I wonder what happens if they do get the servers working and it's something else. Would they tell us?

Maxis did their job (even without their visionary, Will Wright). I really, REALLY want this game cuz I've been a city-builder fan since Tropico and Simcity 4.

EA dropped the ball royaly. There hasn't been this much outrage over a release since Mass Effect 3's ending (another EA game). EA won't come back from this. The hate people have for Activision will look like true love compared to our disdain for this "company".

bahamutdragons

@ziproy But not enough disdain to avoid buying the product I'm afraid, either for EA or Activision.

6orange6

@ziproy hmm going to disagree, with respect. Maxis are not innocent lambs in this, the always online is so interwoven into this project, plus comments from the games developers about 'social building' prior to launch, they were on board with this lunatic idea from day 1.

Ayato_Kamina_1

@ziproy Gotta say I agree. Even if they were to release another game from one of my beloved franchises of old, I'm now at the point where I can't justify paying premium price for it. I would have to wait till it was at least 50% off.

Very disappointed with EA, they continually give us less, continually ask for more money and we still take it.

@Ayato_Kamina_1 @ziproy Away from these interesting points, I really fear for the next Mass Effect game. I just know that EA would really screw it up somehow, and its my bestest game in the world. I just don't have any real trust in EA anymore. They should stick to sports. At least, they can't screw that.... wait, scratch that

Bad_Gamers83
Bad_Gamers83

@Ayato_Kamina_1 @ziproy As much as I would love to jump on the Hate-EA bandwagon, I just can't.  They've shown a lot of support for their customers while just trying to protect their properties.  I know the extent they've gone to is extreme, but I can't bring myself to hate them when, really, they want to make gamers happy and money in the process.

I was expecting some server overload issues on the first few hours, thats understandable.  But the game has been released 24 hours ago and I cant seem to stay logged in. Been trying for 2 hours now.  This is just unacceptable.

And it probably wont be fixed tonight either, since the UK release is just 30 minutes away I expect a lot more traffic.  They held 2 beta tests and they knew how many people preordered it, and they must have known the capacity of their servers beforehand.

Again, UNACCEPTABLE. Cant believe I took 2 days off for this.

Bad_Gamers83
Bad_Gamers83 like.author.displayName like.author.displayName 2 Like

@brainiac1988 It's unfortunate, but for me it's not a deal breaker.   They'll fix it within the next few days and hopefully by then enough people will have stuck with it to remain running.  We should just come to expect launch issues and go with the grain, regardless.  I'm not saying we're not justified in our "I'm mad as hell!" statements, but EA does their best with public relations and gamers seem to do their best with breaking EA's balls.  I do wish I could play the game, though *sigh*

Already quite a few years later, and DRM issues still need to "be worked out"? It's such a shame when you have second thoughts about what is possibly a great game because the technical elements are such a complete turn-off.

@GeekyDad It really is. I played the beta for this game, thoroughly enjoyed it. And yet because I don't agree with the practices of EA and the problems this launch has had, I have a very negative view of this game now.

Why when it's painfully apparent, that allways connected DRM is not going to work. When is EA and others going to figure this out. What a Epic Fail on one of my most beloved games. This is why i did not purchase this, even though I have owned all the others. Microsoft just reversed it's EULA on Office 2013. Why can't these people get it. They wonder why Gaming sales have been going down for almost 6 years.

@keyholebud They are going to go down too, people are tired of the Sims heh heh... The Sims was a good game, but...

I also don't understand why always on DRM was chosen for a game where an average game session could be all day long... I remember with the old Simcities just letting my simulation run indefinitely coming back periodically to see a good amount of revenue had built up from taxes and that the City had grown. Simcity has never been about competition. What is with this World of WarSimCity...

I like you and I respect you as a writer and gamer...but I hate seeing "first impressions" on the front page. Don't abuse the power of your emblem good sir. An impression is never an editorial.

It all comes down to seeing other people's work getting pushed off and I don't think it's fair. But, with that said, keep up the good work and good luck with getting the game to run!

pokecharm

@-Saigo- I was about to say the same thing.

I do first impression blogs, but I keep them to my blog.  I echo @-Saigo- 's comment - I always enjoy your work, but I am always very reticent about posting blogs to the front page, knowing they may not always belong.

Bad_Gamers83
Bad_Gamers83

@pokecharm @-Saigo- I don't understand how it "doesn't belong" it's an editorial.  It's my view of something that's relevant and informs people of my opinions of it.  Isn't that an editorial?

@zyxe@Bad_Gamers83@pokecharmWell i never read these blogs, but saw his post for "Sim City first impressions", and it made me want to read it, and what other "review" type can you give to a game that you cant even play? Even other game sites have gone the impressions route, being that they cant give a full review justice. Bad Gamer is just smart and made an interesting blogs. Cheers to you!

@Bad_Gamers83 @pokecharm i'm not downing you personally, i've just noticed some conversations in other AUBs where the poster appeared unaware how AUB privileges work. so when i saw it here, i thought i'd explain what it seems people are getting at.

pokecharm
pokecharm

@Bad_Gamers83 @pokecharm  @zyxe @-Saigo- I think that is the point I'm focusing on.  There was a time when certain bloggers would mark every single blog they wrote as 'editorial' and thus forced everyone in the entire site to see all their blog posts.  But did that mean that every blog post deserves to be featured on the front page?

I don't have an answer to that, but I, personally, am very careful about using that tag - I know I have a privilege on this site and I don't want to abuse it.  I'm not saying you are, but I try to be cognizant and hope others will be too.  No judgement, just an observation of sorts.

zyxe
zyxe like.author.displayName 1 Like

@Bad_Gamers83 @pokecharm @-Saigo- i believe the idea that is being relayed is that any article you post as an "editorial" will show up on the front page. even if it is an editorial, now that you have AUB privileges, it should be considered whether your blog should be posted on the front page or simply read by people following you when you select the category. it's no longer as simple as whether or not your blog is an editorial.

i believe it is being brought up because i'm not sure that AUB users are aware that this is the case.

Focus on smaller cities, huh? So no bustling metropolis in the cards? What's the largest map you can use, and approx what pop does it correspond to at mostly high density? Also, I heard there's no terraforming, is tru?

Dark3st0ri0n
Dark3st0ri0n

@kohle36 No terraforming, the land is as you find it. Your city is as far as the border goes, which is not big by any means. However you can claim as many city plots in the land as you want. There are cool stuff to compensate for the short comings a little, i.e helping each other/cities(players) out.

But is it worth the $60?  I'm reading and worrying about a game I anticipated for some time.  I simply won't buy an inferior product.  Be honest

drwaldy
drwaldy like.author.displayName 1 Like

@Maxx_2T The Sim games have always had the gift of high replay value on their side. They are sandbox games with plenty of polish that are easy to get going with, yet difficult to master. I've spent around 6 hours on this one so far and I can honestly say it was worth $60 for me. It's a very, very good game that's sadly plagued with the DRM issues right now - but they will be resolved.

If you have ever played the other Sim City games and liked them, I'd wager you'll like this one as well. It's no less addictive or fun to play.

Oh, and I wanted to add... some people are complaining about forced multiplayer, but this just isn't true. I haven't played any multiplayer yet. You can play in a 'private' region on your own, building your own cities in that region. In the sandbox mode, it's a perfect way to learn the game and just mess around a little
