So there I was last night, so excited for the Sony announcement. We all knew it was going to be about the PS4, but even knowing that, the gamer within MADE me stream the "meeting". Stream might be the wrong word, unsless the word "stream" means "watch a stop motion video where the audio just could never catch up", but that's a different story....

I will keep this short and to the point. Yes, I will be getting the PS4 when it comes out, not because I am a "fanboy", but because that's what I do, I buy new shiny fun things to play with, and that's where this story goes south.

In todays world where leaks about new products are common place, or maybe even part of a greater marketing tool, we already had loads of information about the PS4. If you looked hard enough, you could find info about streaming games, social sharing and even "letting your friends play your game". So last nights "meeting" (for me) was not so much about what this new toy could do, but what was it going to look like, how much is it going to be, and maybe most important, when will it be available.

Three things I really wanted to know, am I the only one that is disappointed waking up today knowing those questions went unanswered? Ya, ya, "Holiday Season 2013" thanks again for the breaking news...

The best way I can describe my feelings are "I went to a car show, expecting to see the new models, when I entered the showroom I was presented with a steering wheel and information about what type of mechanics it will take to work on the cars", No tires to kick. It can't be good when the day after Sony is already apologizing for not having something more to show.

I tured off my stuttering stream last night with one feeling, "there go 2 hrs of my life I will never get back"

Back to the rumor mills for me.

I felt the same way... we already knew the PS4 was coming... why have a 2 hour show to show off the controller?  Why not wait til you have the console, like say E3?

I almost watched it but stopped myself at the last minute to complete MGS4. I think I made the right choice.

Whats really important is the actuall size of it, and if it can stand vertically to save some room.

Why does everyone care what it looks like....that is the least important thing. The controller is way way more important, we saw it. We saw what the PS4 can do, we heard the specs. 2 hours of brand new games. With trailers and demos. That was a great show by Sony!

I liked the PS4 presentation.  Mind you I don't usually watch console announcements.  I've taken business classes in university, so I know presentations aren't easy.  I think the speakers did a very good job.

E3 is correct, i believe this will be the big show. In regards to your internet issues, i thought you placed hard wires for your network when you were remodeling your home, if i recall correctly. I streamed it on Wi-fi and it worked perfectly. Might be your computer.

In regards to the no show of the actuall model, yes a total disappointed, but it the gaming previews were cool. It got me to start saving right away, as for i too will purchase one as soon as possible.

@LexLas We did hardwire the entire house, great memory! I even tried from my new monster gaming rig, still had issues. Who knows.

Hardware, shmardware.

It's features like third-party accessory support, backwards compatibility, game streaming, social sharing, DRM-free used game availability & whatever customization they might offer and Sony's schedule for the systematic elimination/removal of these features that this Joe right here is interested in.

The feeds were pretty jittery and laggy, even on really good connections (like mine).  Any real excitement I had was tempered when the video feeds showing the actual gameplay kept switching in and out of SD from HD.  This is the first time I actually set aside time to watch a live streaming event on a game site, and it'll likely be the last.   I think that I, like many others, are just so tired of this generation dragging on for such an unprecedented amount of years that we were expecting to have our minds blown -- and really,  that didn't happen.  But I am happy this is the first, long-overdue step to taking games into the future.

I only bothered watching quantic dreams segment where they showed what kind of facial graphics it could produce which was pretty cool and interesting but how many game producers are actually going to go into that much detail except for quantic dream?

I too wanted to see what the PS3 was going to look like but maybe they don't know that yet themselves. If the controller is basically the same then I wouldn't be too surprised by another shiny box.

I honestly wasn't expecting anything from the "meeting" and I still found myself disappointed.  I was hoping there would be something revolutionary that would change gaming forever, but it was just a bunch of videos of games running on something which will be slightly less powerful than my pc, and some jibber jabber about friendship and being a social butterfly like everyone is supposed to be these days.

Basically it just cemented my belief that innovation is mainly gone from the AAA games industry, and that they're not really interested in people like me anyways, and then I remembered that I don't really care and now I'm wondering why I'm even going online to vent my annoyance about something I don't care about.

Okay, brutally honest...

What's it going to look like? It will be black.

How much is it going to be? Does it matter? You'll buy it anyway.

When is it available? November 2013.

The big question I wanted answered which eventually was but not till today was 'is there a block on used games' and the answer is no. So... if they release games I want to play, I will buy it. None of the launch titles interest me one iota and can I just give a huge LOL to Diablo 3 which was awful on PC but now we get to play it with customised controls so I'm sure it will magically transform into something amazing because of that.

I now what the problem is you said it your self  i will mark it for you

"the gamer within MADE me stream the "meeting". Stream might be the wrong word, unsless the word "stream" means "watch a stop motion video where the audio just could never catch up"

So you must have missed the conference coz they gave a lot of info out or unless you were expecting to see just a "shiny box"and no deatils about it.

they gave the ps4 specs , showed what it can do, and a line of games to follow, a PS4 controller and a release date so the only thing it was missing was how PS4 looks like and thats no big deal

You should drop your Love for Shiny things and try to buy a better internet connection or a "SHIINY CONNECTION"

LOL you just made this Blog to troll people and talk crap thats all .

@OB_Shah Well, with 65MB DL, and 25MB upload speeds at the house, I never having streaming issues. But thanks for trying to point the finger at something. And like I said, the specs for the PS4 have been known for months, but I was really excited to hear that all again. Sorry if I wanted to see something new about the unit itself, hear a sale price, and have a firm release date. As I said, my opinion on the "meeting" might be different than yours. SO, I suggest you move YOUR trolling along, have a nice day.

C'mon if they gave it all to us now no one would care about it by the end of the year when It came to actually buying one.. No no good things come to those who wait my friend, lets just be happy that for now at least we know for certain It's in production., that's enough for me... at least until E3 that is.

Gen_Warbuff

@xxBenblasterxx Did you honestly think there was a chance it wasn't in production? Or maybe they were going to announce a new TV?

I felt the same way you did about losing those 2 hours of my life.

I...  don't know if I will ever get a PS4.  Nothing right now makes me want to get one, and a lot of things that have been confirmed so far make me much less likely to get one.  If I were to eventually, one day, get one - it would probably be a few years after launch when the system gets a revamp, or something.

I think I am actually much more likely to purchase a second PS3.  I mean, we just got one of them the other week and I'm liking it a lot.  I'm actually worried that I will hog the PS3 from my girlfriend too much, so that is why I'm thinking about getting another one.

I am probably still much more likely to buy the PS4 than Nintendo's or Microsoft's new consoles, however.

Danyawesomsauce

The thing that bugged me was that they didn't even show the console. I mean, seriously, all they did was talk about it and show off the games but not the console itself. uuuuggh the curiosity is killing me!

I don't know about you, but all I really care about is if they'll price drop the PS3 when the PS4 comes out. It'd give me a chance to get one, plus all the exclusives I've been drooling over. Same goes for the Xbox 360, whenever M$'s new console comes out.

@starduke -Me too about the price drop.I bought a X box 360 last year to play Red Dead Redemption but I wish I got a PS3.I like their exclusives better.

I love new, shiny things...like cars...I really want a Volvo...I don't care if it sounds lame, have you seen the C70?  I would look so hot driving that convertible!  I didn't watch any of it, but I am curious how it will all play out - I predict delays, anyone else?

These, to me, are the most important unanswered questions...

a) the reliance on a broadband infrastructure of consistent good quality - many places around the world aren't on par with regions like North America, and in that regard a large percentage of consumers/users will be disadvantaged - here down-under, we're royally screwed (though on the flip side, perhaps it will help drive the necessary broadband technology forward to meet such needs)

b) regarding the above, instituting the functionality will be a piecemeal process, so once again, a [diminishing] percentage of the consumer base will be disadvantaged

c) there have been rumblings that the access to "most" online services will require a premium subscription [the rumoured PSWorld] - to me, that implies an imitation of the Xbox Live service, and consequently the confirmation/denial of said rumour has become imperative to informing any decision I might make concerning the hardware, especially given the compounding negative effects that points a) and b) would have upon a "pay-to-use" model.

I'm also keen to hear more in-depth details about the hardware specifications, because although what was mentioned sounded good on paper, there seemed to be a lot of glossing over of definitive facts - what it looks like is less important to me than the hardware's capability and functionality.

As for price... once again, given the usual retail shenanigans enacted by Sony et al. in my part of the world, I fully expect to be shafted either way.

Not everyone got the point that Its a Console War and Sony is maintaining a balance of information sharing to maintain the customers curiosity level at the top and in the same time leaving their competitor 'Microsoft' with guess work.

After PS2's Success Sony was arrogant, they did not took Microsoft very seriously, they did not thought that PS2 customer would let them down. Microsoft took them by surprise and the inclusion of Bluray cost them a lot of time and money. but it looks like they have learned a lot from their PS3 Mistakes and they also learned from most recent Nintendo Wii U launch as well (again the same arrogance issue). So they are not releasing everything at once. information they released are just enough to keep people engaged and not too much so that Microsoft can do the last minute tweaking to come up with a better console. its another way they are saying Microsoft 'The ball is on your court now mate'.

Sony was not suppose to reveal the PS4 first, they were waiting for MS to go first,(remember what Kaz Hirai said just month before the PS meeting, not to release PS4 first) but they got some sort of intel about the next Xbox specs that made them confidante to go ahead first. I'm sure Sony is keeping their eyes peeled for the next Xbox announcement. this time they are really serious.

I'm pretty sure they will watch what Microsoft dose with their 'March' or 'E3' Xbox announcement and move accordingly. so be sure that there will be last minute tweak for the console specs. remember that in the x86 PC architecture there is always room for increasing the CPU/GPU clock speed and increasing the amount of RAM so and so forth to make the console look superior in paper. Gaikai may become Sony's trump card but ist too early to tell. Not blocking the Used Games at launch is a good move by Sony. But eventually they will do this down the road, 2 years into the consoles life maybe.

Microsoft is still in the 'To be or not to be' situation with inclusion of Bluray, or go all digital Download and blocking Used Games. But you can bet that they also have some neat tricks under their sleeves as well. So the are not going to sit there and let Sony go with out a fight.

As of Nintento Wii U, it's still early to say if they are going share the same fate of SEGA Dreamcast or not. But they have made some really bad choice this time with Wii U. Their marketing effort is really bad and choosing the name Wii U instead of Wii 2 was a greatest mistake they have ever made. Recent reletionship with EA is also not looking good for Nintendo. With the new controller and system Nintendo is in a situation where their console is not targeted to the Core gamer nor to the Casual gamers. its too early to predict Wii U's future, but surely Nintendo is not in the same war with Sony and Microsoft, that is hardcore gaming market.

Whats going to happen to the Next gen consoles only time will tell But in My opinion the nextgen console war's just began and its looking very intense. What do you think?

Gen_Warbuff
Gen_Warbuff

@Nasimul I think out of everything you mentioned, what sticks out the most are your thoughts about MS being in the "to be or not to be" situation with Bluray. IMO, If MS does not included BR in the next system, that might be their single biggest mistake. Yes, they have to pay Sony for using it, but if it were MS, I would not want to take the chance of someone who is on the fence to go with the PS4 just for that, or have a Sony product sitting next to mine when I could have included it. Honestly, that is pretty much why I bought my PS3 in the first place.
