It's been almost 2 years since the 3DS was released in North America and it's been a pretty crazy journey so far. From the mediocre launch line up to the price cut four months after launch, the 3DS didn't exactly have the best start. However, I feel like two years later the device is has a fantastic software library. It's been my go-to device for quite some time now, with a lot of great content.

It's amazing to see all of the content the platform has received in two years:

  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D
  • Mario Kart 7
  • New Super Mario Bros. 2
  • Super Mario 3D Land
  • Paper Mario: Sticker Star
  • Kid Icarus: Uprising
  • Kingdom Hearts 3D
  • Tales of the Abyss
  • Theatrhythm Final Fantasy
  • Professor Layton & The Miracle Mask
  • SMT: Devil Survivor Overclocked
  • Star Fox 64 3D
  • Resident Evil: Revelations

These aren't even all the titles, just the one's I've played personally. Nintendo has also done a really great job with the eShop and are continuing to do so. Despite the fact that the user interface is pretty poor, there is a ton of great content from smaller developers and Nintendo. These are the ones I've downloaded:

  • Bomb Monkey
  • Crimson Shroud
  • Dillon's Rolling Western
  • Excitebike 3D
  • Mighty Switch Force
  • Mutant Mudds
  • Pushmo
  • Crashmo
  • VVVVVV

More titles are coming to the 3DS, both retail and eShop. HarmoKnight from Gamefreak and a new FPS from Renegade Kid is coming to the eShop this year. There are more title in the first half of this year that I want for the 3DS than I do with the Wii U and Xbox360 combined.

  • Fire Emblem: Awakening
  • Animal Crossing: New Leaf
  • Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
  • SMT: Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers
  • Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
  • Pokemon X and Pokemon Y
  • HarmoKnight

I also recently purchased a 3DS XL and sold my original launch 3DS. The 3DS XL in my opinion, is a lot nicer. The screens are nice and big, the form factor is a lot better and the battery life is slightly better as well.

Anyway, what do you guys think of the 3DS so far?

@SaltyMeatballs That's my next investment, though depending on what we see of the new Xbox, PlayStation and Steambox. Even still, it's likely I'll build my own rig.

@raahsnavj $240? You mean the Fire Emblem 3DS bundle?

Honestly, the only thing I want on the system is Fire Emblem. Seeing it coming out in the next month has got me eyeing a system just for that one game. Then I realize it would be $240 just for one Fire Emblem and I quit looking again.

I would look into the VC and other items, but how Nintendo supported the Wii edition of that has me turned off to the idea of buying games... again... just for convenience. The 3DS seems like the N64 of handhelds, a time I didn't even own a console and instead played on the PC. Funny, that is exactly what I'm doing today.

It's a great little system, except for the region locking and it sucks how Etrian Odyssey isn't coming to Europe (North American only)

If it wasn't for my gaming PC I would agree with you, it has got a lot of games I want, I just haven't gotten many because I have so many games on PC to play too.

Mine as well. I just need me some more VC games.

I like some of it's games but not really a fan of the system it's self. It's weird not having two sticks and the 3D bothers me, I'm going with the Vita but Sony doesn't seem to have many games coming out for it, hopefully they will show more off in the future.

Glad you enjoy your 3DS!

@ShadowMoses900 The Vita is great, but it really doesn't have very many good games. I used to  have one, played Uncharted: Golden Abyss, then sold it and bought Max Payne 3, and L.A. Noire. The 3DS looks a bit more interesting, though, and already has a great library.

I enjoyed it until my memory got corrupted and I lost all my data. Some of the big name games were disappointing or too short, but games like Pushmo and Mutant Mudds made up for it. Would rather they went for a little more graphical oomph than 3D, as it didn't really add anything of substance to any of the games I played outside of the "ooh" effect in the first few seconds of playing.

I want to get my hands on a 3DS but haven't got the money D:

I've been rather disappointed with it. I got it in August 2011 when they did the price drop and got OoT, SM3DL, and MK7. I loved OoT and it was my first time playing it, SM3DL was really fun if not really short. MK7 was a disappointment to me. I'm not an online player, but the track designs were rather bland, and the limited selection didn't win me over. I preferred the retro tracks to the new ones.

In 2012, I got Kid Icarus, NSMB2, Paper Mario, and Kingdom Hearts. They were all really underwhelming.

2013 however, really seems to be shaping up like a good year. Monster Hunter, Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem, Pokemon, and possibly Luigi's Mansion all look like must have games.

I need to try out Crashmo and Pushmo though. I think those look really awesome.

@Minishdriveby Give those a try definitely, they're some of the best 3DS games period.

I just have been turned away from Nintendo these past few years. I just haven't been able to get excited about games. I might get a 3DS when I get a good bargain, but right now I don't see me getting one. But anyways, nice post!

Pokemon X/Y are single-handedly the reason I'm buying a 3DS...... Okay, that's not true. I also want TLOZ:OOT, Paper Mario: Sticker Star, Kingdom Hearts 3D, Resident Evil: Revelations, Luigi's Mansion 2, and Animal Crossing: New Leaf. I'm so getting a 3DS once my I get my tax refund.
