Theme: [Light Selected] To Dark»
8Dec 12

As I read the news about a Wreck-it Ralph sequel I am reminded about what I did and didn't enjoy about the film. It's been almost a month since I've seen the film and all I vividly recall that it didn't meet my high expectations. When I left the theatre I almost felt like it should have been called "Sugar Rush". Now, that's not to say I didn't enjoy the film, there's so many reasons why everyone should watch it. I think I set my expectations based on the trailers leading up to the release in theatres, it just painted a different story, one that wasn't about a strawberry shortcake inspired setting.

To paint you a picture of a weight scale around the zones, this is how I saw it.

70% candy zone (Sugar Rush)
10% shooter zone (Hero's Duty)
10% neutral game zone (Game Central Station)

10% arcade (Fix-It Felix)

Overall I would give the film a 9.5 but I kind of wished most of the film wasn't in a candy setting. I was reminded of my childhood days when I enjoyed Strawberry Shortcake and gang, which isn't a bad thing if they labeled it that way. With how many games I enjoyed growing up, I guess a balance here would have looked like this.

30% candy zone
30% shooter zone
10% neutral game zone

30% arcade

Have you watched the film and if so would you give it a 10?

The correct answer is "Any movie that I watch with Jody is automatically a 10".

The movie is made for kids not gamers and that's a shame my opinion.

I know what you mean. I loved the movie, but I would've liked to see more of the arcade side of it instead of just Sugar Rush, but they're working on a sequel for it now so hopefully they'll have a better setting and we get to see more old school games. I really don't want Mario to be in it since I think he'll potentially steal the spotlight.

I kinda get where you're coming from. I really liked the movie but I can agree that the majority of its setting did cheapen it a bit.

I still like the whole concept of Turbo and how the plot revolved around glitches, exploits, and viruses. Having a background in InfoSec, I can appreciate how surprisingly accurate yet simplistic the depiction of some of this was.

We haven't had the film out here in the UK yet but it looks great in the trailers.

I agree...felt like a film version of Candy Land.  I was hoping for for nostalgia and cameos... unfortunately only the first 20 minutes filled that need.

I loved that movie but I would agree with you at most point.

It had some cool animation but it was really just a generic cartoon with all too familiar themes that weren't presented all that well. It just did all that with a videogame theme but it doesn't make it good or special. End of the day I have higher standards then 'oh it's based on one of my hobbies so I like it!'

Oh dear. I thought it was going to be an intelligent commentary on the fusion between games and movies that have been developing in both industries.

Never mind...

I couldn't give it a 10, even on my best day - it was a solid 6 or 7, to me.  The sub-story of romance was obnoxious...at least I thought so...

I saw it with my wife and kids 2 weeks ago....... when Kano made his ripping heart fatality my wife (who knows/likes almost nothing about videogames) made a WTF face.....   :P

I liked it a lot and I'l get it on Blu-Ray.

I'm not sure I wanna spend money to see it in a theater. I have very fond memories of Roger Rabbit and this looks like a pale imitation.

I haven't watched it, but I am definitely looking forward to it.

The only reason I haven't watched it is because it simply hasn't debuted here yet.

but have you seen out Strawberry Shortcake and all of them from our youth have changed over the years to be updated and modernized.

some are hardly recognizable from the originals.  The Trolls and cabbage patch dolls are all "with it" and and so many of the dolls my nieces get now have adopted the Bratz look.

I didn't mind it being in Sugar Rush so much because Sarah Silverman's character was really memorable

Haven't seen it yet, but I wish too. My mind is more on The Hobbit when that comes out.

@JodyR Same here, the entire Lord of the Rings Trilogy (which I consider one big movie the same way Tolkien wrote it as one big book) is my favorite film of the last decade.

I liked it, even with the pink and fluffy candy zone. With three younger sisters, I had to develop an immunity to such things. Plus, the racing parts were pretty good. Of course, I wouldn't have minded more in the shooter area.

JodyR

@starduke Yeah, I liked the racing portion too!

I agree, the trailers did make it seem like there was going to be more of a mixed environment than what actually was. But the setting fitted the story line so I really can't complain about it as a whole.

Yes, and No, it failed to meet my expectations also. I'd give it a an 8.5, all the homages weren't enough for me.
