Lots of PS4 info dropped today.  I haven't even had time to look over everything.  But I just want to get something out of the way first.

8493772456_34a85b7767_b_12532_640screen.

This is the new controller.  Love it, hate it.  But acknowledge that the DualShock has finally undergone some serious changes.  Sure, the layout of the sticks and face buttons are the same, but the contours of the pad have been ... fattened.  Too early to tell, but I'm willing to bet it will be a little more comfortable.  The obvious change, however, is the center of the controller.  This is a touchpad.  Repeat: TouchPAD.  Not a touch screen, like the Wii U's tablet, so don't be so quick to jump up and down in screaming fits going, "SONY COPIED NINTENDO AGAIN!"  The only similiarity that I see is to the old Wii remote with the built in speaker.  Not sure why they felt they had to put one there, as I thought it was an annoying and unnecessary feature in the Wii remote.

So apparently, this new controller is going to be the keystone for the PS4's new social focus.  The Share button will allow  you to stream your gameplay in real time to another friend, and even grant him the ability to take over for you and play a particularly hard part for you.  You know, I've already heard a couple people complain about this?  "I don't want my friend taking over my game for me!"  Then don't pass the game over to him!  SHEESH!  You can even upload gameplay video to Facebook and ... blah blah blah.  I wonder what will happen to the gaming world if Facebook disappears... A lot of functions will end up going unused, but that's another blog.

As for the system itself, it seems to be doing a lot of interesting tricks, but at the same time fails to convince me that they're absolutely necessary.  First is the PS3 backwards compatibility via streaming.  This is a wrong way to handle backwards compatibility.  The main problem with any kind of streaming and cloud gaming service is that high speed internet still isn't in every household, and there are some people who have data caps.  Streaming and cloud gaming will not be viable for them.  And then there's the whole part of Sony most likely going to charge you to play PS3 games you already own on your PS4 digitally.  Backwards compatiblity is still very important to a lot of gamers, and Sony just doesn't seem to care much about it anymore.

I'm not much of a specs person, so I won't really comment on what's in the PS4's guts.  I will move on to the Vita connectivity, which considering it already does with the PS3 is no surprise that it will be supported with the PS4.  Again, I've been hearing, "OH MY GOD, SONY COPIED NINTENDO AGAIN!"  Actually, the Vita's been doing this with the PS3 before the Wii U was out.  And yeah, yeah, Nintendo's been doing this with the GameCube and Game Boy Advance, but yeah yeah, computers have been remoting with each other long before Nintendo made the GameCube.  Anyway, I'm very intrigued about this aspect, because I really would like to see if Sony can pull it off.  I have a 3G Vita and tried to use my PS3 remotely, and the video feedback was grainy.  If they can improve on this technology, they got themselves a winner for those who own a Vita.  Plus, there will be less of a need to include Vita versions with PS4 games when the Vita can simply stream them.

From my understanding, the price of the system is still up in the air, but it's estimated to be 419 for the base model and 519 for the more feature packed model.  In reality, it would be 399 and 499 because those previous price points are just too obscure.  399 and 499 seem reasonable to me, because they're 100 less than their respective PS3 launches.  It will still be high for many, but comparably, the cheaper SKU is the same price as MS's more expensive SKU 8 years ago.  If Sony really wants to stick it to Nintendo, they'll release a third SKU, cheaper still at 299.  This is something I would really like to see, because the first two PlayStations launched at 299.  Nowadays, consoles are made to do so many things, the launch price has to rise as a result.  I personally would like to see things go back to basics.

As for the launch line up, we'll just have to wait for E3, but right now, there's not much sparking my interest.  I just heard Watch Dogs will make it to the Wii U, and I'm actually more excited about having it on that than on the PS4.  I'm just hoping they can make some creative  use of the tablet controller.  I'm also concerned about Sony's investment in the social aspect.  Do they really think that we all want our real names attached to our gamer profiles?  I'm sure there will be options to uphold our privacy; it would be stupid of them not to.  But, well, Sony tends to do stupid things.  I'm just kinda worried that the system is trying to do so many things at once, it's going to choke on itself and all these boasted features will become bug-ridden disasters.

Of course, the one real concern that's on everyone's minds is whether or not the PS4 will block used games.  There's a rumor out that says it will in a sense by restricting what the purchaser of a used game will have access to.  In order to unlock the rest of the content, that used game buyer would need to pay to activate his copy.  This way, the game can still be sold used, and the publisher could get a little money back from the sale.  It sounds like a better alternative to flatout blocking used games, but still is not a desirable one.  I guess we're just going to have to continue to wait.

EDIT:  Thanks to @packtop for providing us with a link to an interview where Yoshida says the PS3 will not block used games.  However, it doesn't look like a clear cut and dry answer to me.  I'm still somewhat suspicious.

So, will I be getting a PS4?  It was already in the cards.  It's been a tradition for me to get new systems at launch, because I love the experience.  I also love covering my bases, so if there's one exclusive that comes out, I don't have to worry.  Same with whatever system gets the best version of a console multiplat.  I also have a sneaky suspicion that we're going to finally see The Last Guardian release this year, or maybe next, and the whole reason for the continuous delays was because it was being migrated to the PS4.  I can only hope...

I think they're adding some cool features with ps4 but honestly I was expecting a lot more. Just better online/social capabilities and a touch pad isn't enough to sell me on it. And the whole access your games wherever you are is ridiculous. I'm already addicted to video games, the last thing I need is them following me around wherever I go.

i think he is right about it trying to do so many things over the network, it just seems like too much and its hard to believe it will function smoothly

Let's use simple logic here:

>consoles are computers but with worse hardware and worse software

therefore:

>consoles suck

>ps4 is a console

therefore:

>ps4 sucks

About the PS4 I'm not enthusiastic about it, I can wait a two or three years to buy one, but I will never get rid of my PS3.

I'm very concerned of the social aspect myself. It may prevent me from actually buying if it is forced down my throat.

@nonfanboygamer1 Yoshida told clearly that you can go off-line all the way, if you want. I'm not a "social" person when I play too, so I understand.

I defenitely get what is being said about sequels. You know, it almost seems as though almost anything you can think of has been done already or done to death. I couldn't imagine coming up with creating a whole new anything for a game. These companies defenitely have to have balls to make more than 2 or 3 games in a series. Most people are understanding about a new IP unless it is just horrible and then the 2nd is usually better but to keep an established series going takes a whole lot of creative to work off of what has already been done. It has got to be scary to make something brand new because when it's first shown it's either gonna have insanely high expectations or get bashed left and right for god knows how long. I'd much rather have a good foundation and build off of it than start from scratch but of course there's always the problem of going too far with a series. It is pretty screwed up when u really think about it. Assassin's Creed is one example I got so burnt out on that series I think there should be a least a 3 to 4 year wait for a sequel so not to seem like you're pushing a series down someone's throat all while building the good anticipation for your game and giving yourself a fair amount of time to make a quality game.

Why not build your own PC TODAY, that will out-perform both the PS4 and Xbox 720; in graphics capabilities and as well as every other function available.  I put together my first computer a few months ago, it was the right choice, my 360 is now just a glorified paper-weight, hell it would be sold if not for 1 or 2 titles.  Plus it gives you something you can learn and potentially develop into a hobby, it can never hurt to learn more about computers and technology.  It might cost slightly more depending on which direction you go, I went Intel/Nvidia which is slightly more money, but now I have a machine that will last me years and is already better than the future 'next-gen' consoles.  I recommend at least looking into it, can't hurt.

@VGjunkie87 what tha fuck are tou talking about??!!: first of all: your pc wont out perform the ps4 in graphics capabillities!! where do you get that?? have you seen a game graphically close to killzone shadow fall in the pc?? cmon stop posting this pcfanboy crap!! go to sleep kid!

VGjunkie87
VGjunkie87

@franizarduy @VGjunkie87 Simple hardware specifications.  Skyrim heavily modded on PC is probably the best graphics I've ever experienced, The Witcher 2 on PC with Uber Sampling is also amazing.  I'd be very surprised if PS4 can match that let alone top it (not happening), and by that time the PC will have new availabilities, I'll just simply have to upgrade my GPU besides the cost, switching it out is extremely easy.

@VGjunkie87 I've always been a console person, and there are enough exclusives on consoles to warrant my interest.  Besides, graphics aren't everything, and never will be.

Sohereiam

@JustPlainLucas @VGjunkie87 I'm both into consoles and PC's, what I like about consoles are the exclusive titles for them, but creating a PC for gaming is a hell of expensive, and takes too damn long, while console you only need to put and play(which was killed in this generation).

Either way I'm not enthusiastic about the PS4, gonna wait a few years to decide, since you gonna buy with the release, I gonna wait till you post about the system and the games.

VGjunkie87
VGjunkie87

@JustPlainLucas @VGjunkie87 Trust me, I was always a console person too.  I've had a lot of consoles through the years I don't care to name every one but I've played most of them.  Aside from StarCraft I never really gamed on PC until the past 8-10 months, I agree that graphics aren't everything, you're completely right, although I wouldn't say that they never will be lol.  There is more to consider than just graphics, the modding community for example is amazing, in my opinion pound for pound you definitely get more bang for your buck and the technology is already available.  But if you're hesitant and not really up to the task, I wouldn't get involved, there are potential headaches involved in the process.  If you do enough research and reading though, you should be fine.

VGjunkie87
VGjunkie87

@JustPlainLucas @VGjunkie87 Yeah I understand all of that, as a whole console gaming is more convenient no matter how you look at it.  Not really too familiar with PS3 network, but the Xbox Live was always a really good network too for co-op and multiplayer, I had great experiences on console and wouldn't count them out because they do get great exclusive titles, but so does PC.  If only I had the cash to have it all.

@VGjunkie87 @JustPlainLucas I know, I just never liked keeping up with hardware and modifying specs.  I'm more of the pop-in and play type gamer, which of course with all these mandatory updates and installs makes it harder to do these days.

@VGjunkie87 Get rid of it already and get the PS3 while its pretty cheap and awesome exclusives are coming on the horizon while the 360 is pretty much dead. Just like you I game on PC but I have my PS3 only for all the awesome games you wont get elsewhere.

VGjunkie87
VGjunkie87

@GamerOuTLaWz I only keep it because of Gears of War 3, even though at this point I have so many new titles I doubt I'll play it much again, if ever.  The PS3 has good games, my friend got one not too long ago, but I just don't see myself investing money money into consoles.

Hello.

There are few things about the PS4 that concern me.

I was expecting no BackwardCompatibility because I was sure Sony would change its architecture for the PS4 abandoning the PS3 one.

However, I considered that they would transfer PSN licenses after that PS1, 2 and 3 games would be emulated on the PS4. Instead I have read on Yoshida interview that you will have to buy again your games when the cloud service will be available.

So no PSN purchases will transfer to the PS4.

This is very bad for me bacause I have invested in digital games much, both on the PS3 and Xbox360.

Also about the "cloud gaming" thing I'm very skeptical, because I live in Italy and here the majority have poor Adsl lines: less than 5Mb in download and 500Kb in upload. For example I have 3,5Mb DL and I can't do anything to improve my situation, it's just the line in my zone. I have to change district or city. Also I have to share the bandwidth with the rest of my family, as it is common.

Finally these social/share features of the PS4 really don't interest me.

As footnote I strongly dislike motion controllers, like WiiMote, PS Move, Kinect, SixAxis and so on, so at least I'm fine with the DualShock4.

JustPlainLucas
JustPlainLucas

@hg5 The DS4 has built in Move, though.

hg5

@JustPlainLucas
Yes, I was aware, but I believe it will end like the SixAxis: only very few games actually use it and you can disable it; especially after the controversy of "Lair".

With the PS4 architecture as close as possible to a PC, and Microsoft's being just a small-form-factor PC, it would be relatively easy for developers to create games for both platforms; Wii-U doesn't stand a chance here.

widdowson91
widdowson91 like.author.displayName 1 Like

@badwedgie00 The internal architecture of the Wii U is more like a PC than you know. The gap between the PS4 and Wii U is far smaller than the gap between the PS3 and Wii. The Wii U should be able to run all the games the PS4 gets, but it won't run them as smoothly. But as long as it runs when who cares?

hg5
hg5 like.author.displayName 1 Like

@widdowson91

I disagree.

If you say the Wii U is more powerful than a PS3 or a Xbox360 you are right, but if you think that the Wii U hardware (2GB of RAM, CPU Tri-Core IBM Power PC "Espresso" and GPU Radeon "Latte" 550Mhz) is even close to the spec. released for the PS4, you are wrong.

The Wii U must downscale heavely every PS4 game.

I'm saying this having tried a Wii U and knowing its spec.

I'm not starting a "system war" and I'm not a fanboy.

Before choosing my next gen console, I guess I'll wait for more info about the next Xbox console. But of one thing I'm darn sure, Mister, Wii U is deader than death itself.

Swain23

@JFERNANDEZ84 Wii U is just having a rough launch cause there's no games to back it up. PS3 didn't have the best launch either but ended up being a really good console.

JFERNANDEZ84
JFERNANDEZ84

@Swain23 @JFERNANDEZ84 That's right but the difference is that Wii U is an outdated system. It's like releasing today an Xbox 360 like system with some of today's features. Nintendo never realised that the casual market today is using tablets and smart phones to play casual games... This is sad. I like Nintendo but they are way outta line...

Although I like the PS4, I think I'll wait and see for hackers to rip and release a copy of Sony's operating system on the Net. With their new architecture so much like a PC, one could buy better hardware for a more affordable price and install this PS4 operating system onto their PCs. Now, if Sony is paying attention, I'm sure they've got this covered, but there are always ways around everything.

One of my mottos: NEVER buy a new system within the first year an a half. You'll be running head first into possible glitches and problems. I always buy the 2.0. And as for streaming... i don't even have internet at home, so I don't care for that. Let's just hope the system won't have to be online in order to function! Only time and games will tell if I'll be interested in that next generation console.

Meh, i'm not so big on streaming either. Though my internet is fine, anything can go wrong with it. But i'm a little exited to see what this new console will do, it seems pretty decent. The price, eh I've done worse with a PC xD
