Games: A Genre Review
A review of the different game genres. First of all, lets see what we've got to analyse when it comes to console games.
Third Person Shooter:
These games were usually all quite similar, however due to new games such as Gears of War and Ghost Recon incorporating a deep cover system, the genre is morphing slightly. This is only going to get better as the relatively new cover system is destroyed; literally. As more third person shooters develope the cover system, so they are learning more ways to destroy it in the new "destructible environments". Unfortunately, when it comes to third person shooters, while there is a lot of potential, game makers rarely seem to veture out into the unknown and most of the storylines and plots are set in a futuristic era - from near future to thousands of years in the future. This genre has the potential to expand in new directions making more third person shooters but in different times. Guns have a history beyond present day. Lets see if game makers can make third person shooters with cover systems, destructible environments, and a way of making WWI or American revolution era weapons fun and easy to use.
First Person Shooter
There are so many FPS games out there that the originality is running low. While games like Call of Juarez had the right idea, taking FPS into the wild west they had to compete with the hundreds of other FPS games set in present day or the future, all of which are extremely similar and offer very little diversity. Game makers try and add new features such as slowing time and destructible enviroments which merely breathe one breath of life into what feels like a dying genre. Since the arrival of FPS Call of Duty 3 that incorporated a new feel to the game, adding intense realism and an AIM DOWN SIGHT (ADS) view for targeting (rather than the classic aim through reticle system before that). This ADS view was a new thing for gamers and people liked it. The problem now however is that its become the new reticle, everyone is doing it and now its old. Where to now? Destructible environments? They're new but how long before its taken for granted and the FPS genre is once again suffereing from lack of ideas?
Role Playing Game
I believe RPGs is where the heart of gaming truly lies. Games should be a means by which the players are transported into another world, different from their own where they can explore and develope the world and their character at an individual level. These games also have the diversity that other games genres lack. Games like fable, Jade Empire, Gun, Two Worlds, Oblivion all offer different elements of gameplay, combat, character development and story. These games are usually larger, more interactive and longer than the average FPS or TPS.
(other genres i will be reviewing)
Horror (FPS and TPS)
Fight Simulator
Flight Simulator
Real Time Strategy
Arcade/Cartoon
Hack'n Slash

Post E3 2008 -Whats the future for games?
Well, E3 didn't tell us that much. Covered by all the hype around Gears of War 2 we didn't get anything on any smaller games. What happened to Alan Wake?
I've been wondering about games and what new genres we could have. What about a Vietnam? WWI? Napoleonic? Western? There are a lot of eras where game makers never seen to go. They all seem preocuppied making futuristic shooters of which I'm certainly bored. Enough shooters, more RPGs!
