The following was written for Chalk Talk:

If its one thing that is guaranteed to generate talk across the internet, it is whenever a new console is rumored or details of said consoles appear. But there are always two sides argued. One side insists its the only way forward and once we all have new hardware everything can progress exponentially. The other protests and strongly believes more time with the current generation would bring about greater games than advancing to new technology so quickly with possible higher production costs.

The interesting thing is a predominantly PC gamer like me never really gets bothered by all this.Sure we get flashier games too but we dont have to wait for the next generation to shell out a load of cash as the PC hardware market is almost constantly evolving. Obviously though, to those who are using current generations of consoles, this is a massive deal.

So Im going to take a look at what we have, what we might get and maybe what we need from the future of our beloved hobby.

game_consoles.gif

What we have: What we have now is incredible, look back 15 years and we were all on repeated textures with low polygon counts and not much in the way of artificial intelligence. Stories were limited by what the developers could achieve and games simply couldnt compare to the other media out there. We now have sophisticated graphics, AI that at times, have their moments generally are of a much higher quality. And stories that are no longer defined by what is possible, but rather by the developers imaginations.

I think that with a longer time in this generation we actually could see some truly great titles. Developers can push the engines they use further - a lot of what weve seen can be advanced and changed to create new opportunities. Only when the current technology is truly mastered would we see the best results and some developers believe that there is more to come from the current generation.

What we might get: Now this is the part where I needed my crystal ball to predict the future but as I seem to have misplaced it Ill just have to go on what little info we have. The advances we may see in the next generation all depend on the hardware that is used. But there are a few that say the next generation is where all of the best advances dwell, and that our current generation is in fact holding us back.

It becomes easy when looking at the next developments in consoles to focus on the visuals. Yet there are many features that will actually benefit from the increase in power and resources. Simply having more processing capability and a higher RAM will mean that tasks can be handled quicker and in greater quantity allowing more sophisticated on screen action. Will it be a big enough jump from what we have? I think is the most important question though but it is only time that will reveal the answer to that one.

So we might get some something spectacular that can only be achieved with the latest and greatest hardware and tech. But wasnt that true in the previous generation switch too? And are we only now starting to see what these consoles can truly achieve? When they first released it was said that Crysis would never come to consoles. And not only has the original come to them but two sequels also is this proof that we dont yet need another cycle? Releases like Halo 4 are also proving what can be achieved on this generation. Then there is cost to consider. How much will the new generation cost and what cutbacks will be made to keep costs reasonable?

Luminous-Final-Fantasy-next-generation-5

What we need: Is to take a step back, really look at what we are chasing. Developers making completely opposite claims and a community who just want to see more of what they love and less of what they dont. It seems every time a console releases the world stops and looks for a second. But what are they seeing, what has actually been promised? We are told a new generation would herald a new era, but what exactly would that era bring?

I think the next generation needs to have a large advancement in almost every aspect to make the grade. Last time HD gaming meant upgrading was worth the investment. We are now however at a stage where we have a lot of the shinier graphics and sophisticated gameplay. Would you shell out the cash for a new console that only improved a small amount? Do you think the next wave of consoles has been much needed and the sooner the better?

@TheSniperSpy I didnt know pc fanboys really existed. its really quite strange of an adult to even say anything like big hairy balls so i'd assume your 12. and your doing a fine job making pc gamers look like shit asshole.

@TheSniperSpy Ahh pc fanboyism at its very best (or worst depending how you look at it) You sir have some very serious issues. May I suggest that pc gamers by and large are perceived as spotty virgins gaming in their mums basement?

Absolutely. Just look at Uncharted 2, Crysis 2, the Half-Life episodes. We don't need better graphics! Visuals and sound are now as good as they will ever need to be, in technical terms. I think we probably have all the physics tools we need too. The focus now should be on gameplay and artistic design. Of course, new kinds of console, like augmented reality or VR headsets, would be great, but conventional games don't need new technology, just new ideas.

If Halo 4 is the best this generation can achieve, then by all means bring us next gen asap!!

MGS5 and Watch Dogs are the future and it seems promising...

Its up to us to end the casual gaming, free to play, day 1 dlc charade!

yep, im 31 and ive been playing games since i was 6 and i have to say that im about burned out of the industry as a whole.

In the last decade and more we just continue to decline in a dozen ways and the community most of the time just seems to get get more tolerant with every new incarnation of crap while shedding the better people involved who just burn out. games today are the simplest mechanics concievable and artwork that keeps getting more and more feminine and childish when in reality there are more adult males that play video games then any other demographic.

I used to play 8 bit games, so i really dont care about graphics.  I care about gameplay, but we've come to a wasteland as far as that is concerned.  And i dont perceive the next generation of free to play (or pay to win) games, or simplistic apps and motion based games are going to meet that need.

the problem is, what else is there to do?

It was only a few days ago that the CEO of Ubisoft said we needed a new generation of consoles to open up consumers to different IPs and different products.  He said that consumers are more open to diversity and not just your COD yearly rehash or the next 201x football game.

That being said, I think the the importance of the next wave of consoles is being overstated.

PC Gaming in the last few years has been fantastic, and I think over the next 2-3 years is only going to get better.  Indie games through the humble indie bundle, through steam greenlight and even more importantly through Kickstarter which removes the PUBLISHER (!!!) is the best thing to happen to gaming in a long long time.

You want more of your old school creative story driven games, instead of your IPs being rehashed over and over - well it's not coming, it's here now.

I still think there's plenty of life left for the current gen of consoles, but I think the gaming industry as a whole needs the new consoles. New consoles will help the gaming industry by rebooting enthusiasm for game sales. I lot of developers and gaming enthusiasts forget that we live in a consumer based society and the gaming industry is built on that. If the average consumer appreciated the purely theoretical aspects of technological need\ vs want then we could probably get another few years out of the current generation of consoles. But consumers want new products!  New consoles will help the gaming industry by boosting awareness and sales. Sure initially sales will be lower, but momentum builds slowly. The current generation's momentum is starting to slow down with regard to sales.  Right now we are at the end of what the average user has come to expect from a console's lifeline. 7 years is a good run, but its time for a change.

What truly make a console great are the games on it! While the current gen has better tech and the ability to do more the quality of games have reduced drastically. Ps2 in my opinion was the best ever with tons of games for every one great franchises(many having been carried over to current gen). Also next gen will mean swankier hardware and cost of development will increase which will lead to publishers nickel diming us for every other game leading to tons of DLC maybe some cut straight from the story which should have been there to begin with.

I wish next gen need to see more emphasis on advancing graphics but not on a technical sense, but rather with daring, creative art direction.  I'm so tired of the whole gritty "realistic" gray-brown look of a lot of current games that keep getting pushed this gen.  I want to see vibrant colors, creative character designs and art styles I've never seen before.  Take a look at games as Rez, Wind Waker and Okami, these games still look beautiful and are still relevant today, and probably will continue being so long after this gen is over.

I also want to see a greater emphasis placed in interactivity with the environments, better physics and overall A.I. taking precedence over graphics.

As someone who plays games on a high end PC and came into the current gen console scene a bit late I was shocked at how bad the graphics are in most games, both for 360 and PS3. Of course I have no doubt they would have blown your socks off 7 years ago but very few games impress graphically now, even the recent ones.

Low res environment textures seem to be the main culprit. Most devs seem to 'cheat' by having hi res characters and low res backgrounds and environments. It was a bit of a culture shock to start with but I've found so many games I love on both systems it really doesn't bother me anymore but...

A new console with current generation graphics is way overdue in my opinion. If either the new XBOX or PS4 offer graphics on a par with the best PC's can currently offer they will transform console gaming completely. More RAM (a lot more) will really help too so the devs can make bigger games without worrying about how they can fit into memory. Let's not forget that current gen consoles don't even do 720p properly most of the time let alone full HD and I think it's time for a step forward.

I take your point that the more recent games on console have been an improvement SuperMassive but the amount of games that have been scaled down dramatically for consoles then ported to PC looking 8 years out of date is very disappointing from the point of view of PC gamers. Next gen consoles can't come soon enough for me: great exclusives on console with no hardware restraints and hallelujah no more truly awful PC ports.

@blueinheaven Have you played uncharted? In respect to graphical quality those three games do seem to match many pc games played on high graphics.

And look at FarCry 3, from the console gameplay i've seen so far that seems to run at a good fps and with decent textures.

I feel we need more games that are completed to a high level, and if we can get more games of that quality, then this generation could go on for several more years.

blueinheaven
blueinheaven

@JOLIVERW Uncharted 3 looks okay the other two look terrible. 'decent' textures are not enough anymore. A good PC will give you amazing textures. Several more years of technology from 7 years ago please, no.

It really is time to move on. No need for devs to try to squeeze the last bit out of ancient technology anymore,  just my opinion of course.

blueinheaven
blueinheaven

@JOLIVERW  @blueinheaven Yes I'd say it needs both of those and at least upper range graphics if they want to hit the ground running. Full HD quality graphics with decent memory and we'll see amazing stuff on consoles for a long time to come. Fingers crossed!

JOLIVERW
JOLIVERW

@blueinheaven Yeah, sadly I think I probably agree with you if I'm being honest. I just don't want to spend another £400 on a new console... The next gen needs 8GB RAM, and a quad core processor don't you think, just to match a 4th Q 2012 gaming pc.

Remember the first stage in Uncharted 2, where you're walking through the deforming snow, all beaten up, protecting your face from fire? That moment where you wanted to scream THIS IS INSANE, but you couldn't, because you lost your ability to speak? That's all I'm asking for, the moment you start a game and it's so immersive you can't let it go. I don't care for next-gen, but please please please, let it be next-gen and not just a little bit better.

I think the gaming industry has received a surplus of an influx of Hollywood-style action games. There's way too many games with guns too. The guns need to be toned down, and the first-person shooters need to die. I'm not saying shooters should disappear altogether, but they do need to take a rest. Older franchises that used to be good are now getting crap games with the developer claiming to be salvaging the franchise to revive it, when they're really just trying to milk it and get more money. Take a look at Medal of Honor and Need for Speed. Their older games were great. Now they've completely strayed from what made them good and now they're both Hollywood-style action flicks. Even Resident Evil. It used to be survival horror, and now it's an action shooter.

@IanNottinghamX  @NightFox313 I agrree with you, but think about it, what are the games that sell more, shooters. There are certain games that made sure of that like COD, Halo, Battlefield. The revenues this games generates are equal to the combine sells probably from 10 different games, It is just insane. The mainstream consumer buys these games, no way they are going to stop making FPS.

About the games with long video secuences, it is just normal, that technology will allow a more immersive experience. However, focusing too much in this aspect can be costly and unnecesary.

I can see where your coming from saying the big budget shooters need to disappear so some new creative genres can grow. But it will never happen, I do not see another genre logging in more play time than a shooter. I have sunk many hours into rpg's and racing games and love them a lot. But I find myself, like many other gamers, falling back to the fps for competative play. As long as consumers purchase the AAA shooters, they will be made.

IanNottinghamX
IanNottinghamX

@VampireLord123  @NightFox313 For the long term good of the industry I think this trend of the big budget shooter has to die...it has run its course. The direction they need to go is making new types of games making new types of Genres. Im not saying to make shooters disappear but scale them back so that the focus goes to new fresh content. The Video game industry at its core is an Creative/intellectual creature. Sure its about business but when Suits start to dictate the creative/intellectual aspect everything goes to shit..

We don't need more hardware. We need better ideas. That's why indie games with only 1 innovative mechanic are such a hit nowadays.

Stop making the big budget hollywood game. It will just be forgotten.

I agree. While I would appreciate next gen consoles, we're at a really fantastic point for the one's we already have. Developers are becoming more aware of what the hardware can do and how to use it so we are getting better quality games. If you look how they have advanced over time such as Virtua Fighter 5 up against, say, The Last of Us, the leap is pretty big. I also play PC so I believe in the idea of games being developed for PC and ported to the consoles. However, that rather ruins it for the console exclusives if, visually at least, they can't stand up to other non exclusive titles.

sgtZipper
sgtZipper like.author.displayName 1 Like

@DamnILoveGames PC will never be the main platform for a lot of reasons.First reason: piracy, they just can't control PC. Don't say "When I like a game I'd buy it", because there are a LOT of people that don't. There are even parents that download games for their children, they can have it all. If I were a developer I would say screw it and find the cheapest way to release my game on pc, thus porting it and releasing it a year after the console version with all DLC packed in.

Second reason: Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo own studios or make deals with studios, like Naughty Dog for the Uncharted Series. We would never see these games on PC. I wish it were different.

DamnILoveGames
DamnILoveGames like.author.displayName 1 Like

@sgtZipper I never said that PC should be the main console, I merely supported the idea of making games for PC then porting to console so the PC gets higher visual quality for example. I certainly see why it would never be the main console as they can be quite tough for some kids to get their heads around. Anyway, piracy happens on consoles, and despite games not being originally developed for PC, the piracy still happens anyway.

DamnILoveGames
DamnILoveGames

@playstationguys Exactly. I mean, I don't have anything against fps war games but we have too many that focus around the same idea. Run and Gun down the terrorists to save America from a bad guy who gets about 2 minutes of screen time. Take Battlefield for example. The sounds and visuals and animations are great, but the story just never really came across as engaging. At least try and expand the idea's we have. The Uncharted games never striked me as special with the storylines so much, but I was still engaged by it and the characters and so on made it entertaining.

@sgtZipper  @DamnILoveGames piracy is far FAR worse on consoles these days. Any of the usual torrent trackers have the console version of the game cracked and available way before the PC versions are cracked. Steam is the way forward, they just need to takeover GOG so GOG can sort out all the old games on steam to get them working properly. Id love a GOG KOTOR1!!!!!

DamnILoveGames
DamnILoveGames

@sgtZipper Actually with a console you just insert the disc, the game starts and installs the updates and files automatically and you just play. I can install games just fine anyway, especially cracked ones. Though I wouldn't suggest that as an example seeing as it's illegal.

s2i2p2i2o
s2i2p2i2o

@highlanderjimd  @sgtZipper  @DamnILoveGames It is a lot easier for the avarage user to install a cracked game on pc, one often don't even need to instalm just unpack a rare-file and you are ready to play. This mentality, that it is easy to play downloaded games on console, does not excist to the same degree. Don't you need to do shit with your console to be abvle to play those games? See, I don't even know, and I think that I am not the only one.

I think a new generation will only brings new graphics ... which won't be that "wow" ... I don't see how they could improve graphics wise. I don't think graphics are really important, sure it is nice and all but it doesn't make a game. Better way of using the hardware, better AI, maybe it is the time for new ideas.

each gen as its over-made game ... last gen was guitar hero and the like and this time it is FPS, maybe we will see a platform comeback, or a fighting comeback ... or a new thing will spread like fire.

The only thing I'm sure, Nintendo is the only one to really try new things in the gameplay while Sony and Microsoft copy and try to push it to the "next" level.

Well ... for now I'll stay with what I have and wait to see what comes out. Who knows, we could be surprised.

s2i2p2i2o
s2i2p2i2o

@Coco_pierrot Well, developers have gone out saying that testing new IPs or other invioativbe stuff would be less risky on a new console. For now they just keep playing it safe, doing what they know will sell. I think that a new era of consoles would at least bring something new to the table.

VampireLord123
VampireLord123

The idea of having better graphics is an appelling idea, but as a PC gamer, graphics only can take you so far. At the beginning you might think that looks amazing, but afer a while playing, you just stop seen that, and becomes normal. In particular games it is important a better powerhouse, because allows previous limitations to expand and add new features, in case of multiplayer, the amount of player per session. Sometimes, even a more detaile atmosphere for the games in case of horror or RPG games.

However all these changes, does not affect the gameplay in various games. It does not matter how amazing your game looks, the gameplay still the same in the case of many FPS. Another example would be God of War, i played all the iterations of the game, and i can assure you, even if God of War 3 look way better than the other games, there was not a substancial change in gameplay owned to better graphics. The game played exactly the same only prettier.

Bringing new consoles with better hardware, it could be a solution for some games, but others, don't truly need it.

highlanderjimd
highlanderjimd like.author.displayName 1 Like

@VampireLord123 imo graphics are nice and all that but its the framerate that is the immersion killer. A game that chugs along at 24-30fps on a console really kills it imo. Certain games are locked at 30fps on PC too, la noire was unplayable at 30, lucky it was modded pretty quickly so we can now play at 60. SO MUCH BETTER when everything moves smooth. The new consoles should concentrate on 60fps at all times before anything else.

V8-Boogie
V8-Boogie

 @highlanderjimd  @VampireLord123

so true! i could not agree more.

playing a game with 30fps or lower kills the immersion totally.

i tried to switch from PC gaming to an Xbox360 recently because of the convenience and savings capacity a console offers.

but after 10 seconds console gaming (brothers in arms : hells highway) i knew that's nothing for me.

Being used to full hd, v-synced 60fps PC graphics, the consoles 30fps combined combined with bad tearing was like a shock to me.

but it's a fact that fancy graphics printed on the retail box sell the games to the masses. so the developers sacrifice nice fluid gameplay for slow eyecandy graphics.

the average consumer does not even know what 60fps means.

and there are still people around who claim you cannot see the difference between 30 and 60fps.

so, as i said before, i was really willing to switch to console gaming. but with the current generation it is not possible for me.

so my hopes are with the nextgen consoles.

let's wait and see.

yeah_28
yeah_28

My opinion about next gen:

Positive, is the fact that games will look a lot better for consoles and thus finally for PC, tech will also improve games like BF where hardware limits much more important things like the amount of players.

Negative, is that devs and publishers will more than ever focus on graphics and thats it, little innovation in gameplay or other aspects, if this console gen could stay a lot longer, they would eventually have to truly improve gameplay aspects of series like Assassins Creed, but with a new gen, just making AC3 with better graphics will probably be  the whole idea.

Also negative, is that developing cost will increase a lot, so that will make it harder for small developers like RED from CDPROJEKT to put their games in consoles, and there are obviously smaller devs that couldnt even put their games in this gen's consoles.

I play on PC like you, so at least we'll get better looking games after 6 years, but with next gen or this gen, its still all going to be about the graphics and/or just releasing a new game with barely any improvements or innovations but that most will buy.
