So I just picked up XCOM last week and I'm fully aware that I am addicted to it. The gameplay is tight and balanced (the A.I. cheats, dammit!), the progression is addictive, and the atmosphere is wonderfully tense. I love the game and it deserved its 8.5 as well as its multiple GOTY nominations (did it win any awards? If you know, please comment!).

However, there are some qualms I have about the game, and there are a few ways that I think could greatly expand on its replayability. Luckily, Firaxis has strongly hinted through several post-release interviews that they are working on a sequel (HOORAY!) and are looking to improve upon the first game. These are my suggestions.

1) More Maps

One of the things that makes XCOM so great is the tense atmosphere that the game creates while slowly moving through a fog of war shrouded battlefield. The map design in this game is top-notch, but a huge problem I have with it is that they like to repeat. A lot.

I'm in my first playthrough and I have played on the same map on three different occasions (actually, on two of those occasions it was the same mission, too. Just with different enemy spawns). I plan to play the game at least 2 more times (one on Classic and one on Impossible difficulty), and the game loses some of its tension when you know the map before walking into it.

images?q=tbn:ANd9GcS92S39uk3EPxt8EuOGLd3

But...how...? I shot this UFO down last night! It's back!

Another reason why I want more maps is because...well, they're so damn good. I would not mind waiting an extra month or three for the game if it meant I would (truly) not see the same map twice in two playthroughs. That would be awesome. It would be even better if we could get a random map generator that creates these great maps when a mission starts, but it seems that the crafting of the maps must be done by humans. And that's fine; I just want more so that I can keep the feeling of suspense on my second and third playthroughs.

2) More Enemy Types

OK, this one is also aimed at the vein of replayability (excuse me, but this game just screams at you to play it more than twice). To be clear; the amount of variations in the enemies here is great, but there's potential to make it better for subsequent playthroughs if, say...we didn't see them all.

I'll give an example. The very first alien you come in contact with in XCOM: Enemy Unknown is the Sectoid. For those of you who don't know, here's a picture:

images?q=tbn:ANd9GcReq-qaxXSKFsLbi7YsgKz

Him? He comes in one piece, but then I turn him into pieces.

This little guy is the grunt of the game, and quickly becomes the least of your worries as you encounter enemies such as Chryssalids and the terrifying Ethereals.

Okay, so let's say that, in the sequel, on my first playthrough this "grunt" creature is a Sectoid. Good. But what if that only happened by chance? What if there were, say, 3 different "grunt" creatures I could have been given for my playthrough, and I only got to fight the Sectoids by chance? You would get the Sectoids for the entirety of the playthrough for continuity's sake, but let's say you play again. This time, instead of Sectoids you find a creature called a Lurker in your mission, and then Lurkers are the "grunt" creatures for your playthrough?

I feel that adding and then randomizing enemy types would be greatly beneficial to the replay factor of the game, possibly with a feature to start a game where you can select which creatures that you have already discovered that you want to show up in your campaign. I would want to play again and again just to see what else Firaxis created for me to kill (or be brutally murdered by, for that matter).

3) Flexible Weapon Upgrades

One of the most satisfying moments of the game is when you finally research a new gun to fire at the aliens. The only issue with that feeling is that, once you create the gun, you're done. There's no more for you to do with it. Sure, you can upgrade ammo capacity and such in the Foundry, but there's no way to modify each gun's stats for individual soldiers.

I feel like it's a missed opportunity. My favorite example of this element is in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance where you could craft a custom weapon for one of your soldiers to equip. You could customize its stats and colors, and could even give it a cool name (or a stupid one). Of course, in that game you could just pay for the best stats on any given weapon type, so XCOM would have to do it differently for game balance, but I feel like it could be done.

4) A Story...Maybe?

This suggestion is out there, I know. XCOM isn't a game that's particularly built for a story: aliens are coming to do something bad to humans, and we have to stop them before said bad things happen. The skeleton of a narrative works for the game's structure. But what including a campaign that focuses on the experiences of a squad of soldiers? Their families, their past, their weaknesses and vices, etc. There's potential for a good character-driven narrative here, especially when you throw in that they could still be permanently killed. You'll care about them on the battlefield more, not just because they have really high hit-percentages and psionic abilities, but because you know their story and want to see it end.

---
I know it's a lot I'm asking for, but with the first game out and the formula created, I feel like a good sequel to the series would try to significantly expand upon the first. This all being said, I'm on board with whatever Firaxis wants to do with the next (unnanounced-but-it's-so-happening) title.

What do you think? Am I completely off my rocker here, or do you agree with anything I said? What do YOU want in a sequel to XCOM?

First to each his own. I played or wore out Xcom UFO Def. along with 2 others. So here is were we differ. I dont love this game I think they did a disservice to the original. I enjoy being able to select my unit base on their stats, here I could decide which unit did what with what. Current game eliminates that all together. The game makes the choices for you to me dumb down. Although the game is nicer when you look at it but it needs more than good looks it needs content substance which this game lacks alot.

Are the two similar?? no I dont think so not even close there are so many differences between the 2 that this justifies my statement. The story line is way too short and I find the game all not to hard to play both in classic and impossible modes. Limitations hurt this game and examples. Build only 1 base, only 1 interceptor to intercept, no base defense, poor research tree No real erries feelings when play it another example: when in the original you would get shot at from an Alien and I can assure you the first time it happened to me I jumped and the music help you to get that feeling in the new one there is nothing there to help u feel threaten at anytime. I could on about it, but the new has alot lacking and to give it this much credit is undeserving. They dumb down a game that was a Game of the year. This Xcom Unknown does not hold a light to the original one.

Want to know what they can do to add new content play the old again and then come back and see what u can add.

To be able to play the same game as the Aliens invading earth. Your squad can be Muttons and eventually become Mutton Elites. Cycle through a new set of Alien weapons and armors not seen in the the original game. You verse armed civilians in early stages then police forces, national guard the military and finally the X-Com team. Your ultimate goal find and invade the x-com base to capture the psionic X-com soldier for your experiments in perfection.

For me I just hope the next one isn't as buggy. I love this game but the SHIV bug and others and camera glitches really piss me off. Good list though.

perhaps heavier units, tanks and that kind of stuff able to be deployed?

like facing different alien armor, tanks or helicopters, take the battle to the three battlefields, water, ground and sea, everything with its variations on troops, i liked the rocket launchers but there was nothing to shoot em at, also, more enemy types

stroyline seems cool

In addition, I honestly wish the art style was less GI Joe. I know it was done on purpose and I gave it shot, but it just doesn't do it for me. The game play can be so tense and brutal, I wish the look mirrored this feeling. If the art style were something darker/more realistic I would really love it. I know its classic for xcom to have that campy look? but isn't it more a novelty thing? People like it because that's how it was, not because its best way to pull off the game.

And I agree with your ideas. The next installment could be truly great.

@Epicurus-Reborn It wasn't really meant to be "campy" per say, it's just that realistic weapons and armor are kind of hard to really see and appreciate from an overhead perspective.  I got a little art book with my pre-order purchase, and in that they talked about how originally they used "real world" models for a lot of the human weaponry, but it just all looked kind of banal and non-discript.  The reason the characters and weapons look "larger than life" is, if nothing else, so players can actually see their troops and weapons and easily tell what their characters are armed with from a distance, and kind of "feel" the power of their over-sized guns.

I totally appreciate where you are coming from- I think an "edgier" look would have brought back more of the tension from the original game, but I still found the art design pretty pleasant and inspired.

I like you ideas a lot more tiers of weapons or even types and more upgrades with leveling like maybe another tree that was not class specific like a just a bunch of random things make you move farther or give you more hit points every time you get a promotion you get to choose one

And to be able to roam free in the city, rob banks and get a job. And also would be so awesome if you could steal a car and rent a motel room to have sex with a hooker. And feel hungry and get diseases and more skimpy anime armors.

Also, if they EVER took out the ability to rename troops, I dunno if I could enjoy the game :(

monstachruck
monstachruck like.author.displayName like.author.displayName 2 Like

Did you play the original game?  One element they took out was the ability to have multiple bases, with their own troop detachments and fighters ready to scramble.  Also, YOUR bases could come under alien attack if a large enough ship located your base, which lead to some pretty hot fights with a less-than-ready crew.  I would like to see that element return.

However, as for having a "storyline" for the troops, I think that would defeat one of the best parts about XCOM, which is being able to completely customize every aspect of your team members, including their face and name.  I make every member of my team into someone I know, and give my friends updates on their statuses and achievements.  It's a big hit, and something I've been doing since the original X-COM.  I would be absolutely heartbroken if the ability to customize my team was replaced by team members with a "story mode" that prevented me from changing who they are.   The reason I care about them, aside from how fragile they are, is because, to me, they are people I know, and genuinely want keep alive.  I'd be heartbroken if my best buddy or my girlfriend got zapped by a raging muton!

But, that does give me an idea.  Instead of just being able to customize and upgrade troops, include the scientists and engineers- make it so that they can individually level up, and research/build things quicker, as well as giving them names, ranks, and appearances.  During base defense missions, maybe they can kinda be a resource to protect, and if necessary, the last line of defense.

I totally agree with MuddVader. I feel that as a multinational force of 'UFO exterminators', we're not doing a 'great' job if we've got a team of 30 or more recruits sitting on the sidelines when we can only send out one Skyranger and one team of assault guys to take on the baddies in the entire world. So many times I've been faced with the dilemma of choosing which country to help. Why can't we buy more Skyrangers if we want to? Send out multiple teams? Kinda doesn't make sense. But then again, maybe they can correct that in a future patch. Totally love this game though.

I don't understand why if I have 30 guys, why I can't get a team to all 3 areas that are being attacked.
Being able to send out multiple teams and just doing the battles in order of proximity to the base would be an awesome addition to the game. It gets a little ridiculous maintaining stability later in the game if you don't choose to tackle the story immediately.

Actually, two of your suggestions are basically in the original game already.
1. In the original game, maps were randomly generated.  So yeah... no problems with having all the maps memorized sucking out all the drama.
2. While the quantity of creature types was roughly the same, the order you ran into them was totally random in the original game.  I found this a superior experience to having the remake spoon-feed you the easy guys first.  You haven't lived until you've had to fight a Cyberdisc on your first mission and run away screaming like a little girl.
3. I don't think this lends itself to guns like it does to swords, but it could work to an extent.  You'd have to balance things pretty carefully to where it wasn't game-breaking, though.
4. Valkyria Chronicles does this, and the gameplay is extremely similar.  Which is why I count Valkyria Chronicles as one of my top 3 games of this generation.  I really liked it there, and it might work to an extent here.  I think the hurdle, though, is that with the sheer quantity of soldiers that die in X-Com, there would likely be very few (if any) pre-made story characters left to follow by the end.

Also, my own major asks...
5. Bring back multiple bases, and have all alien attacks be discrete (instead of always in groups of 3 so you're forced to choose one and leave the other two).  It's not that I want to make the game easier.  I don't.  But being artificially limited to one Skyranger and having the aliens always coincidentally attack 3 places at a time, every time, really took me out of the reality of the game.
6. Up the maximum squad size.  To maybe... 10?
7. Bring back Blaster Launchers!  Because they were hilarious.
First time I ran up against a Blaster Launcher, I was in an alien base, with a soldier standing around the corner from an elevator.  And alien was 2 floors above that soldier, also around the corner from the elevator.  Well.  He fired a Blaster Bomb around the corner, into the elevator, down the shaft, out the elevator, and around the corner again to kill my guy.  My jaw just totally dropped.

@AtheistPreacher I played Valkyria Chronicles (I agree, one of the very best games of this generation) and wanted an experience similar to it I came to XCOM. You pretty much got where I wanted the story to come from...so perhaps instead of permadeath, it's just game over when a certain soldier dies. That would be more akin to Fire Emblem and VC.

My XCOM game did have a story. Each and every loss of a character was important. It was a story I crafted myself. In my own imagination.

"When Bret Hart (codename: Hitman) went down after our first encounter with a new alien species the squad was devastated. Sarah Connor knew that the duty of reporting this to Bret's family fell to her and as she mourned the loss of a friend, she lamented having to recount this awful moment with his family. Sarah had long hoped for a promotion. But not like this. No advancement was worth such a price."

@ Thunderstarter:

You forgot about more reaserch projects, and more alien artifacts. Definetally more UFO types ( no Terror ship?!! c'mon Fireaxis)

Perhaps making interception phase more complex would be cool - akin to Apocalypse, where we had buckload of  weapons, and support systems for interceptors

I agree with almost all of your main points. But the last part may be little too much. A story is the defence of earth(actually this game had more story then the original xcom). Maybe little side story like fighting cult would be nice, but other then that, the game really does not need any "soldiers background sotry" or "families",so on.

Thunderstarter

@pr0teu5 I don't think it needs it, but I think, if done well, it would be a great addition to an already fantastic game. This is what I would **like** to see, not **need** to see :)

The thing I liked the most in the first game was working up to the prototype ship that could both shoot down UFO's _and_ deliver your squad to the resulting ground engagement right then and there.  I also miss having multiple bases as well as the base defense missions.  The current base layout is all flash and zero substance.  A good base defense mission would serve to re-enforce the feeling that it actually is your base and it's important.

Plus the standards - spend a couple grand to hire some voice talent with foreign accents instead of the "All-American" sounding squad which actually only has two, maybe three Americans in it.  Clean up the frustrating lockup bugs.

And last but not least - I miss going to Mars!

@Thunderstarter Whoops, I meant TBS. I sincerely dislike TBS, so despite how great XCOM seems like it would be, the basic structure of how the gameplay is would keep my from enjoying it. Other games, like Fallout Tactics, have the option to have everyone act at the same time, making it like a RTS.

starduke

@pr0teu5 Ever heard of X-com: Apocalypse? It's actually an X-com game with the option to play it either as a TBS or a RTS, and it generally got good reviews, by both the pros and the players. Anyway, I wouldn't mind seeing a pure RTS X-com game.

@starduke @Thunderstarter Most likely you will get a system which both side HATE! I hope they keep TBS. If I want play RTS, i will go play Starcraft. Or if they want, they can build entire new RTS game base on Xcom backgraound.

It would be great if a sequel come without the bugs XCOM: Enemy Unknown has. The developers are working on patches and stuff like other games, but still everytime they fix something, there are a lot of other problems still unfixed. Some people who, for example, play ironman mode, suffer greatly with freezing issues that ruin the whole game, because of its single autosave without a backup feature.

I definitely look forward to seeing a sequel of XCOM, the original game itself is very addictive and, gameplay wise, brilliantly executed.

I would like to see more bases, actual base placement (not just continent), bigger squad sizes, larger maps, RANDOM maps, time units, more accurate % to hit rolls (I have missed too many 95% shots), more mission types, looting corpses on the field, limited ammo, better interception mini game (and more frequent), choosing class promotion, more weapons, more aliens, and wait....

Just reboot the original with modern visuals.  How about that?

-More Skyranger's to deal with multiple situations at a time :)
-Added accents/voices to choose from. I want my stereotypical Russian to sound Russian :)
-Perhaps a rival company(?) that you need to deal with e.g. @APizzo667 idea of a human 'enemy'.
-Added weapons: e.g. two shotguns of each type that focuses on different elements (more shells/less damage).
-Added customization options: many character ended up looking the same, especially with the few voice options.

@_Judas_@APizzo667 More skyranger would requited a totally different game design. As the new x-com is build on game design of 1 base 1 ship and force you to choose a mission of 3.

as for Human enemy,Personally I would go with the Cult (maybe a nod to the Xcom apocalypse,by using the same name?).

@Thunderstarter @_Judas_ @APizzo667 I would like this too- in the original, if you lost funding from a nation, they would essentially fall under the control of secret alien forces, and those fallen nations would become havens for new alien bases to raid!

Talking from left field / outside the box here, but I'd love to have human enemies rather than aliens. Perhaps a World War-esque / battle of different nations enemy system.. It'll never happen, but it makes me think back to Valkyria Chronicles.

Yeah the weapons all look good and fun to use but it is always upgrading rather than having a side effect. It can be actually mods like in Mass Effect 3. Each weapon having a mod to upgrade. Installing a second upgrade may cause some side effects.
